DELUSIONAL FANTASY!! I love how these bandwagon Barry Sanders fans make all of these IGNORANT EXCUSES for him. Barry Sanders ABSOLUTELY DID NOT have matadors on the offensive line. In fact he had two of THE BEST offensive lineman at their positions Lomas Brown made 7 consecutive Pro Bowls and one all pro. He was FAR BETTER than Mark Tuinei who didn’t make his first Pro Bowl until his twelfth year in the League. Kevin Glover made three consecutive pro bowls. They were both taken in the 1985 draft by the lions and played a combined 33 years in the league with TEN pro bowls betweennn bf them. Barry was a great talent. A top three back in history. But he always tried to break the big one and often didn’t follow his blockers. His running style may have been more exciting. EMMITTs was more conducive to winning because he always gained positive yards. Barry had the most negative yardage in nfl history BECAUSE of his running style. It’s why he didn’t start until his senior year in high school. Detroit invested HEAVILY in their offensive line. The DELUSIONAL FANTASY that they had no line comes from the 1992 season when the lost Eric Andolsek to a fatal car accident and Mike Utley to paralysis. They called people out of retirement and even ended up playing a tight end at guard one game when injuries hit. Kevin Glover was injured and they started a rookie free agent at center. Lomas Brown was the one bright spot that season. Barry TO THIS DAY played with the NUMBER ONE RECEIVING TANDEM IN NFL HISTORY over two years 95 and 96. He also had a 1000 yard receiver his rookie year something Emmitt didn’t and had a Pro Bowl lineman BEFORE EMMITT DID!! He also played on THE NUMBER ONE OFFENSE IN THE LEAGUE IN 1995 something Emmitt once again never had!! Oh, and in 1991 Detroit DESTROYED Dallas in two games by a combined score of 72-16 including knocking them out of the playoffs. So Emmitt CLEARLY DID NOT come to a better team. They didn’t become better until 1992 and it was mostly BECAUSE IF EMMITT!! Go sell your delusional FANTASY ELSEWHERE!! And in 1993 Detroit signed three HUUUGE offensive lineman to three 5 million dollar contracts (big money back then) to overcome 1992.
I feel bad for younger people who never got to watch this guy play. And the crazy thing was we never saw him decline. 10 years in the league, 6 1st Team All-Pro selections. It doesn't matter which year the highlight is from, he looks exactly the same. To me, that was one of the most impressive things about him.
His last year he was declining. I'm a Bears fan from chicago and we'd see him twice a year every year being in the same division. That last year you could tell something was wrong. His top end speed was fading and he couldn't produce in the red zone at all (4tds total all year). Even playing against pass-oriented defenses most of the season (they were usually playing from behind) he still had his lowest YPC. The team went from 5-11 during Barry's last year to 8-8 and made the playoffs the next year with basically the same roster. That 2000+ yard season took a toll on him I think, combined with the total carries from every other year it was visibly affecting him. He knew it and retired at the perfect time, unlike most RB's who go a year too long....

Back then if you were the featured back, you got all the carries, even when the team goes 5-11 and you're ineffective unless playing against passing defenses because your team is always behind... when the games were close and they were playing the run Barry was not impressive that year. If you watched him play and compare more than just his yardage total stats year over year, you would see the decline was obvious. Like his YPC dropping almost 2 full yards, like how he only scored 4 total tds in 16 games that year and was particularly ineffective in the red zone, like how he couldn't hit the home run play anymore because his top end speed was gone, and then things in hindsight like... as soon as Barry retired the Lions went from a 5-11 cellar team to making the playoffs with basically the same roster the next year. If you're only looking at his career stats page on football reference.com then I could see how you think he was at the top of his game.... but in reality, he retired at the perfect time. No longer at the top but not totally washed up yet like how Emmit Smith ended up with the Cardinals his last year.
Barry had a great year in 1998 by any standard. He had plenty more juice left. Emmitt was a better RUNNING BACK!! He was a better receiver, better blocker, better third down back and a MUCH BETTER goal line runner. Emmitt wasn’t “set up” for ANYTHING!! He came to literally THE WORST TEAM in the NFL or did you forget Dallas’ 1-15 1989 season. Barry was more “set up” for success than Emmitt did. Barry was one of FOUR pro bowlers on the lions his rookie year. Emmitt was THE ONLY ONE on his roster. Barry couldn’t change his running style any more than Emmitt could. Barry came to the PERFECT team and offense for him. Even according to his FATHER and Emmitt came to the perfect te fir him. The teams adjusted their offenses to these GREAT HOF BACKS!! Detroit whooped Dallas by a combined score of 72-16 in two games in 1991. Including knocking Dallas out of the playoffs. Barry also had the number one offense in the entire league in 1995 something Emmitt NEVER HAD and number three in 1997. EMMITTs line didn’t become dominant until Erik Williams was inserted into the lineup in 1992 and that only lasted 2 and a half years until Williams got hurt half way through the 1994. If you watch this video 95% of it is Barry running through HUUUGE HOLES!! As someone who played running back I know what I’m talking about. This myth that Barry played with a bunch of scrubs is ASININE!! The reason he retired is because Detroit let all of their GREAT players go and he lost his love of the game and didn’t want to be part of a rebuild after they went with a ROOKIE QB in 1998 after breaking up the GREATEST RECEIVING TANDEM IN NFL HISTORY in 1997. To this very day the best.. Barry only had three more great years in him. Detroit’s downfall had nothing to do with him. The difference between Detroit and Dallas was the difference between controlling the clock and not controlling the clock. Barry was NEVER a ball control back. Like his father said. Barry needed “space” to operate. Dallas became a GREAT TEAM precisely BECAUSE OF EMMITT!! The entire offense was based on EMMITTs running. Detroit’s was built on the pass FIRST!! Barry also had a 1000 yard receiver his rookie year. Emmitt didn’t. EMMITTs line was average his first two years in the league. Yet he still gained over 1500 yards in 1991. The same year his line gave up 11 sacks of Aikman against Philadelphia in ONE GAME!! EMMITTs production dropped drastically once Jerry destroyed the offense and Irvin was the only legit threat they had from 1995 on.
Emmitt rushed for EXACTLY the same total yardage his last year as he did his rookie year so check your stats. He NEVER EVER should have left Dallas and actually spent TWO YEARS in AZ. If he stays in Dallas his whole career and Jerry isn’t a MORON he finishes with over 20,000 yards rushing in 15 and Barry ends up at 19850 after 13. FYI in high school I foresaw that free agency would DESTROY the NFL which it has. I fixed EVERY ISSUE WITH EVERY TEAM largely with their own players. I still have them memorized to this day. I could have handed them to any GM in the league in 1995 and they would have been overjoyed. The NFL is a shell of its former self. Team chemistry is gone and defense has been outlawed. Games are no longer decided on the field but in the booth.

As someone born and raised in Chicago, I agree. The best 10 years of enjoyment for any NFC north fan having to watch the lions were the sanders years lol. He was so fun to watch.

Him retiring had nothing to do with being smart or worrying about getting hurt. The lions are THE most inept organization in all of sports. Barry knew it and was fed up. Any organization that had that kind of talent and continued to lose speaks volumes. Calvin Johnson retired early, too, for the same reason.

Obviously the guys that Brown was up against were a far inferior group, so to say that Jim Brown did better against his competition than Sanders did against his as a means of claiming Brown to be superior is pretty ridiculous. That would be akin to saying "Tim tebow is the best quarterback of all time because look what he did against the college competition, way better than any other quarterback." What do you suppose Sanders would have done against Brown's competition? Be honest...

You have to keep in mind that Barry Sanders did all of this while on a crappy Lions team and horrendous offensive line. That makes him even that more amazing, and truly the greatest of all time.
A crappy Detroit Lions team that won the NFC Central Division in 91' and 93', played in the NFC Championship game in the 91' season, and made the playoffs in 94', 95', and 97'. That horrendous offensive line that featured multiple NFL All-Pro Center Kevin Glover, and multiple NFL All-Pro Tackle Lomas Brown. And if it weren't for the tragedies that happened in 1991 and 1992 to starting Guard Mike Utley, who suffered a career ending paralysis injury, and the other starting Guard, Eric Andolsek, who was killed by a distracted truck driver while doing yardwork on his front lawn, the Detroit Lions offensive line would have been even better for Barry to run the ball.

In my opinion the greatest running back ever. This man was incredible to watch.
The acceleration. Being able to change directions on a dime. Stopping and starting again instantaneously. Using defender's momentum against them. That killer spin move. No one, and I mean NO ONE, has ever had that total skill set. On top of everything else, he was a humble gentleman. He's the GOAT, straight up.

I was Lucky enough to watch Barry Sanders career as a Detroit Lion. I smile remembering all his highlights and records. THANKSGIVING day games. Now players PROTEST, shove BLACK LIVES MATTER DOWN OUR THROATS. AND PREACH WHITE PRIVILEGE.. all these millionaires playing a game. I've got the best memories to last a lifetime. Personally I'd give him just a little more on power, the way he bounces off some of these tackles, runs through others, even linebackers who have the size advantage on him, he was a pretty strong runner. I like the numbers aside from that though, and bottom line, dude was the best to ever do it lol and also my favorite. My very first school report I ever had to do on an individual back in elementary school in the mid 90s, I did mine on him lol
Being a Raider fan I still give credit to Barry Sanders as the GOAT. He could run, he could catch, he could block, he could make a play out of the impossible. I only wish he could have a Superbowl ring but even without he was a true Superman. I wonder how Bo Jackson would have compared had he only done football and had a full career?

I guess I'd just respectfully counter that his ability to run through guys/bounce off was more an effect of his balance and agility than power. 7.5 is still very powerful but leaving respect for runners like Bettis, Jackson, Okoye etc whose styles were more obviously geared towards power. But yes Barry was a pretty strong runner indeed for his size. He was short as hell for an NFL player but was surprisingly heavy due to his insane leg strength. Yeah for sure a true hero of the sport. Others may compare or arguably exceed him but for me his style and temperament are second to none and he his the most memorable back to ever run the ball imo

I love Bo and his story as well, but for me even if Bo had a full career and was leading rusher, I just love Barry's style and manner that he'd be my favorite. It's the same reason why spiderman is a more loved character than superman even though superman would compeltely destroy spiderman. Spiderman's style is just more likeable.

As a Chicagoan and a Bears fan, I had to watch Sanders twice a year. It pains me to say this, but if I were starting a team I’d pick Sanders over Payton. He was just so good. He could have easily won the all time rushing title, but he just retired when he was done with the game. No hype, no ego, no regrets. The dude was the best and a total class act. (Bears fan grumble grumble)
No end zone dance. He just hands the ball to the ref. Total class.

Sanders is on record as saying his father told him to “act like you’ve been there before and will again.” He felt all the over-the-top celebrations were just sad displays and, frankly, I agree. And before you make this thing about race (again) Mark Gastineau was one of the worst perpetrators of this BS and cost the Jets a playoff game with his ridiculous displays. The simple issue is this: at best these displays are a bit silly, but harmless… but at worst they are narcissistic self-indulgence that often cost teams penalties, games, and create a lot of ill will among the players. I do agree that the NFL often goes overboard, but to imply that this is yet another racial issue is just insanity.

@BD Phantom H.O.F Brian Dawkins once hit Mike Vick in the open field while crossing the goal line After a 30yrd scamper, it was already a T.D so much so the rest of Brian's Teammates pulled up 5 to 10yrds prior.
It fractured Mike Vicks ribs, no flag and it was called a great hustle play and not giving up.
The best ever in my opinion ..A marked man and still couldn't be stopped. Over 15000 yards in 10 seasons.

The myth of the terrible oline. Did you even watch this highlight video? Id say watch it and check out his blocking. Aside from 4 or 5 runs, he has great blocking and at least 6 yards before even worrying about a tackle. Go to 4:48. It was a myth. But continue to let your eyes deceive you

Barry was always a class act. He would make an amazing run, then toss the ball to one of the refs like, hold this I'll be back. Never gloated, rarely, if ever celebrated a TD. Mentally and physically one of the best ever.

There's a reason Barry Sanders holds the all-time record for most yards lost, and I'll give you a hint, it's not because he lacked elusiveness or speed! It's because defenders were on top of him the second he got the ball on a regular basis.
I've heard it said that Sanders simply would not run to where the play was designed, how does anyone know that? When there's no hole to go through, what are you going to do? Does anyone think that he jitterbugged, juked, and ad-libbed for exercise? It's because there was nothing there.
Glover and Brown were solid linemen, but it takes more than that, and Glover was only there for about 4 years. The rest of the line was always patchy, and even if it was five pro bowlers, it's still only five guys. No tight ends to help, no fullback.
Now consider that despite the fact that he's the all-time record holder for most yards lost that he has the second-best yards-per-carry average of all time... nuff said.

Where Barry shined the most... were his evasive moves. He is running, cuts to the left, when the defensive player commits to the left, Barry cuts back to the right and leaves him behind. Seen him switch left then right back to the left, right, left, etc... all in one run. Amazing runner.

Gotta agree with wtkiller. Sweetness was the best running back I've ever seen. Could throw, catch and block. Rarley got caught from behind. Barry was the most elusive and quick but got run down from behind. He didn't have that breakout speed. Both were great and I'm glad I got to see their best stuff.

@@SlickNy1924 Pretty much.. And just because you have the genetics and body type, doesnt mean u will be able to utilize it like Barry did. So yeah, super rare. The closest Ive seen is Saquon but sadly he messed up his knees early on. Saquon didnt use his body and direction to make cuts like Barry did and used his legs more for directional purposes which puts a lot more strain on ur joints/knees. If you watch Barry, he changed directions using his whole body. It was amazing and unique and its why he stayed healthy with hard jukes all the time on terrible turf

I saw Emmit run, Dickersons fly, Sweetness dance, never saw Brown, but Barry is the greatest runner I ever saw!
Brown was great at running over and through tacklers. He was straight up North-South running and he was the best at it in his time. Teams stacked the line cuz they knew what the BRowns would do ... didn't matter. He wasn't as fast as Barry and didn't have the sick moves that Barry did.
All I do is shake my head when I watch him. We'll all wonder what could've been had he played for another team. Good god!
Besides his physical abilities, he literally thought on his feet. He ran at the defenders that were off balance and the defender with his feet too close together, he might as well been sitting in the stands

I love watching Barry Sanders' highlight collections. There's a lot of defensive players out there running around naked from the waist down, with the way he fakes them right out of their pants.

If Barry Sanders had played behind the Dallas Cowboys or the Washington Redskins OL ( as they were called at the time ) and the channels they would have created for him to run through he would have set records that would never be broken , with all due respect to the Detroit OL Barry more often than not had to find his own way through , without question he’s the greatest running back to ever play the game .

Fun watching this again. Got to see Barry play several times when I was in high school and college, as I've been a Packers fan since the late 80s, and felt I needed to see them play against Barry. Barry is by far the one NFCC/NFCN player I never had any qualms about rooting for, even against my team. Barry is the mentality and skill that's missing in the NFL nowadays. He didn't need the refs giving him PI calls to help him, he didn't need game momentum on his side, heck, sometimes he didn't even need linemen blocking for him, he just blew everybody away. I seriously miss the NFL from the mid to late 90s.

The lions line was hyped and for 1 time in his humble life sanders was being driven by a personal vendetta in which was to break the 2000 yard club established by OJ. Sanders last run u could see the zeal in his body lanuage from the snap of the ball.
Barry Sanders is still the best RB I've ever seen, my personal favorite, and one who I believe is the best. None of today's RB'S are even close to Sanders.
