- Did you know that Ellen Pompeo almost refused to star in Grey's Anatomy? The actress behind the iconic Dr. Meredith Grey has been through a lot of turmoil before she felt comfortable in that role. So what are the hidden struggles of Ellen Pompeo? Find out in this video!
After her breakout role in Moonlight Mile, Pompeo expected to become a movie star, but that didn't happen. Still, " to be stuck on a medical show for five years" was never her plan, but she eventually took the role for money.
One of the fans' favorite scenes is Meredith convincing Derek to "Pick me, choose me, love me", but Ellen Pompeo almost felt embarrassed for doing it. According to actress, there was nothing empowering in that phrase and it did not suit her strong character.
The most challenging episode so far was when Meredith had to dismantle a bomb inside a man’s chest. Although she did have a stunt double, the girl got badly hurе doing the first and only take, so it was Ellen's job to do the stunt. Of course, Pompeo was strongly against the idea, and there's been a fight with the episode's director.
Despite being the lead star of the show, Ellen was often told that she could not succeed without her screen partners, namely Sandra Oh and Patrick Dempsey. So when each of them left, she doubted whether she should stay. And proving that she can carry the show on her own became Pompeo's mission.
In addition to proving her worth, Ellen Pompeo had to re-shape the toxic work environment with long hours, rivalry and bad behavior. She's now proud she created a comfortable space together with Shonda Rhimes.
Another fight the actress won was her long battle for the equal pay. In the early days, Patrick Dempsey was paid almost double compared to her salary, and she felt it was unfair. The producers refused to pay her more, but as soon as Dempsey left, Pompeo started re-negotiation. And in 2018 she became the highest-paid TV actress making whopping $20 million a year!
While Grey's Anatomy is back to filming season 17, and there is a lot of stories to be told, Ellen confessed that she does not want to be in the show forever. Firstly, watching herself getting old onscreen is challenging, and secondly "to leave when the show is still on top, is definitely a goal". So, a few more seasons then?

What do you like most about Meredith Grey?
Everything!!! She’s my role model and my inspiration to become a surgeon xx
The fact that after 10 years they decided “oh since Patrick left, we can pay Ellen more I guess” how are they going to pay that man more money than the LEAD CHARACTER Meredith GREY on GREYS anatomy.. it’s not shepherds anatomy tf
That’s not why they agreed to pay her more lol. It was because after Patrick left the show, Ellen was the only main character they had left to carry the show, so she welded all the bargaining power. They couldn’t afford to lose her too. No Ellen would have equaled no show after Patrick left.
@@buffalokay you missed the point, Patrick was A main character but Ellen was THEE Main character. Why would they ever pay Patrick more money when the show was never about him. She should have had been payed the most from the start.
@@carlarv2432 I very much understand. I was quoting Ellen in an interview she did about a year or so after Patrick left the show. Ellen was explaining how men always get paid more for the same job in the workplace, and that she had asked for equal pay before, but was denied. She went on to explain that after Patrick left the show, she finally had some bargaining power. She had leverage. I encourage you to go read the article. It was published by Time or People Magazine I believe. Ellen explains it all in detail about her fight for equal pay.
@@carlarv2432 so you really believe a unknown person with little experience should be paid more than the very experienced person who is known around the world as one of the best in his field. All because of the title of the program? Please you can't be that foolish.
There is a big reason why the show is doing all this press. This might be the end of the road. Viewership is down by 50%. The downside started in season 11 and keeps dropping.
let’s not talk about how she first started the show when she was 33. she literally looked like she was 20, and she still looks young. she didn’t age at all
she looked pretty old at 33 to me. lots of lines on the face and neck. im only on season 5 and wondering what you saw.
@@ttammychin oh-
@@ttammychin 😭😭🤣🤣
@@ttammychin I thought she looked old in the beginning too but once u get to the newer seasons then go back you’ll see it differently
@@sasicasi04 everyone says she looks good now, but I think she looks pretty old 🤣😭
Of course the "pick me, choose me" scene fit in perfectly with Meredith Greys character. In the early seasons, Meredith was not an empowered woman...she was a child whose father deserted her to start another family and she was raised by a distant, cold mother who was more focused on her career and her affair with Richard, than providing any type of security or real love for her daughter. She was desperate for someone to love her, so begging McDreamy to choose over his wife made perfect sense. Peace out....
I would love to watch more i only wish Patrick was not killed off because they did have such a great love for each other and just really nice to watch...thank you all for such a nice show....
Completely agree!! She was finally demanding the love she wasn’t strong enough to demand for growing up. That scene is still one of my favourites and it’s not cause it’s a woman begging a man to love her and choose her, but because it’s a woman strong enough to demand what she wants and deserves after years of being silent. I loved the scene and I freaking love the show.
I agree. It really took several seasons for her to get to that point.
a g r e e d.
@@Mi1aE1ise I agree! So many people hate on mer for that and have even coined the term of being a “pick me choose me girl” but that scene was something we’ve all felt once in our life but we all grow! It’s called character development and that was a step for her to become who she is now!
After they end it, they should make a spin-off of Zola being a surgeon
Factsss
I think that's how it will end. A pan off into the future...
I think it would be better if we watched Zola’s adoptive mother and aunts help her learn ropes and then move on with her as the focus
omg yess
YESS HER AND SOFIA AS INTERNS
The fact that Patrick felt he was entitled to more money than her WHEN IT WAS HER DAMN NAME CARRYING IT pisses me off to no end. Never once did I think that anyone besides her was the center of that show and if anything I thought Chandra Wilson and Sandra Oh were more valuable than Patrick's character. Just goes to show how misogynistic this world really is...Ellen you made that show!!
I sooooo agree!! McDreamy was my 2nd to least favorite character. He wasn’t that valuable to the show in my opinion.
I agree & HE should have backed her up for equal pay if not more , after all the show was based on her in the first place !! I wasn't fond of him either at first but once him and Meredith got married & had a family I did like his character. But I never knew she went to him asking for help to get equal pay and told her No until watching some videos recently and it was said by both of them i think or maybe just her that they had strong chemistry from the beginning , it was like they had known each other forever .. So you would think as not only a close co worker & friend he would have said Yes lets do this I'm there for you all the way but Noooo , I think the whole Mc dreamy thing went to his head making him think he deserved more pay than her or something i dunno it's a shame he wouldn't help her..tks tsk . She is sweet & didn't let it change how she felt about him & call him to talk about him coming back this season , water under the bridge as the saying goes & she is happy so that's what matters. As far as his character on the show it was a nice surprise & would be nice if he was back for good & Meredith , him & the kids have a happy ever after.
exactly!! derek was only important to the show because he was HER's husband. too terrible for them to do that to Ellen. clear misogyny and sexism
I wish Ellen Pompeo would write a book about her time with Grey's one day bc I have so many questions. How did she reconcile not being supported by costars in her fight to get equal pay? How is it that they were all stuck in this toxic environment and now the same people are still working on the show but everything is "okay"? I want to know everything and I want her to name names. (It'll probably never happen but I can dream, right?)
Are we gonna talk about how she literally makes 575,000 an episode. Like omg
That’s why there’s 16 seasons 😭😭
Sheldon Cooper made $1mil per episode in Big Bang
And it should be more than that. How the hell does ABC have a series carrying her character’s name and pay her male counterpart more money. Without Grey there is no Grey’s Anatomy.
@@shamisomarabwa202 *Jim Parsons, because Sheldon (the character) didnt
As she should
if they end, they should end it at season 20. i wanna see mer grow old and maybe if she gets her mothers disease see that. i wanna see her kids grow up, if they become surgeons
Me too
Same! At this point three more years girl!!
YES! I don’t even care if she stays in it, it’s a series that can continue going on for 20 years and then some. I just wanna see this show evolve, even if Mer leaves, we can still have the rets of the cast and then new.
Or like full and fuller house, doing a new one in 20 years where her daughter or son is a doctor. Idk there is still so much story to be told here!
i wanna atleast see zola become an intern
Zola’s anatomy
I think Meredith breaking down and saying "love me" showed that she was human. Even strong, empowered women break down sometimes. She was so unbelievable frustrated with Derek wavering back and forth between her and Addison. She finally cracked. The wall came down and she showed her real feelings for a minute. It makes for a well-rounded character to show her weak side as well as her strong side. And we all know love can make us act out of character from our normal selves.
I love how Derek makes her think she has a chance, she makes a whole speech, and then he’s like, nah ur not good enough!!
I like the “pick me” speech only because it’s relatable. Everyone that’s been in a situation with someone they love thinks the same thing but are never brave enough to say it and to know their worth
Agree.
Look, I think the bond mer and Christina had was amazing it was shown so perfectly what broke my heart the most was when Alex left I was so upset why would the writers make him chose Izzy and let him leave jo THE SAME WAY IZZY LEFT ALEX THAT WAS EXTREMELY PETTY
Yes but then again, Alex would do something like that. In the end he is Alex.
Yeah! That sucked! I felt had for Jo since she already had a abusive husband and when she's finally happy, her new husband leaves her? The same same husband that promised to protect her and love her. Such a sad ending for them
To my recollection Izzy came back and wanted to stay but Alex told her to go.
@@maeve926 you’re right.
That's what I did understand either I mean they weren't good for each other. I felt so bad for jo.
The “pick me scene” is really what stuck out to me as a 14 year old girl. When I think of Grey’s I think of that part.
When I think of Meredith I think of her brave medical breaches, her losses and how she recovered from them, I think of how she raises her kids, I think of her legacy. I like to forget the “pick me scene” when thinking of Dr. Grey because it was early and showing she was still developing her strong, feminist, and empowering character
If They end The show. End it at a round number, or a special number
Lol!! I feel the same! I want clean closure
like 20 seasons. it’s a nice number
or like....never end it :)
I have the same thought. if they don’t finish now in 20, we’ll have to wait up to 25 seasons, too bad 😂
33 because of the episode with the guy with OCD 333
okay but what if when greys end, the final scene in the final episode is all the kids of the characters all grown up and walking into grey sloan for their first day of internship i mean just imagine
i am now sad about this and kind of hoping this does happen omg (but it would only work with zola)
This would be so cool!
And saying it’s a beautiful day to save life’s
I think that would be incredibly predictable and not interesting. I think you can take inspiration from what your parents did without doing literally the same thing. What about Zola being an air ambulance pilot and Bailey being a social worker, for example. Grey's has a serious problem not depicting roles other than surgeons except that one season with Olivia the nurse.
I literally dread the ending of greys.
She's 50?! She's gorgeous. I love her and her values.
I personally think the pick me scene was empowering in the sense that she knew what she wanted and fought for it no matter what because she loved Derek and knew that being with him was good for her. Plus, he helped her grow as a person and made her happy so it’s understandable that she would beg him to love her because it was a good thing she wasn’t ready to lose. Derek loving her and always being in her corner really helped teach her to believe in herself and know her worth because he never let her doubt herself and he also trusted her to be her own person and have her own success. That’s what made the relationship so empowering and electric.
The first TEN YEARS??? 10 years have to passed for them to go ok enough toxic lmao
I think that the whole point of "pick me, choose me, love me" is that it is out of character for Meredith. It shows that she wanted him to love her and loved him so much that she was willing to beg him and show "weakness" which in my opinion just added to the character development of Meredith.
Why the hell did Patrick Dempsey refuse negotiating with her? Unbelievable to think you deserve double the salary as someone else who is just as, if not more important, to the show because they're female.
I'll beg the cast like meridith begged Derrick to "pick me, chose me"
I love this show!! I've rewatched the entire series more times then I can count and still love it, I still get sad, mad, cry, goosebumps, shocked at the same parts!! This show is TIMELESS!!
LOVE YOU GREY'S ANATOMY ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
me too
I still to this day miss Dereck on the show Meredith and Dereck were so connected we felt every thing they put out there pure raw amazing acting between them... Meredith is amazing I just wish they would find a perfect love for her again someone that falls deeply in love with her and they end up together happily just like she did with Derek but someone that chases her instead of her chasing him...that would be Awesome I’m kinda loving the present 💝 Christina sent her...they would be the perfect couple..🥰❤️
ellen pompeo dosnt look her age at all
Yes she looks so young she’s in her 50s
She looks late 20s - 30s
She looks 30!!!
She looks old sometimes but other times she looks so young
W out make up she looks old bc make up is a mask
I still love the show and think that meredith and hayes should be the ending love because her twister sister sent him. They have the same life and they are very good together. Both finding that magic of a first love again and make it work.
She deserves the money she’s done 17 seasons and maybe doing an 18th she’s amazing
I've watched it from the start & really hope it doesn't go away any time soon. It's such a part of my life now!!!
The Pick me. Choose me scene was far, far more complex than Ellen gives it credit. The reason it became so iconic, was because Meredith was so closed off & disconnected from her emotions that for her to even allow herself to be that vulnerable in that moment was a milestone in and of itself.
I have been here since the beginning. I tuned in when the very first episode aired, and was hooked instantly. I was a huge fan until Shonda started picking off cast members because she had a chip on her shoulder. Derek was the last straw for me. Derek was the last straw for a lot of people.
But Ellen is so freaking pretty for her age, I wish she wasn't so uncomfortable with that on the show. It reminds everyone how much time and work is put into it💗
Ellen has my eternal respect for her achievements in the Dr. Grey role in this medical drama. She could have been as big as Julia Roberts, Jennifer Anniston, Michelle Pfeiffer . . . What a unique twist for a woman of her talent! She took that show to unexpected heights and from the start was THE Lead. Infuriating to me that she didn't command the highest salary all the way through. Losing Christina Oh and Patrick Dempsey was hard to bear, yet Ellen kept making the Meredeth character compelling to watch. Watching her age beautifully and authentically is also empowering for women and girls. I hope it goes a little longer . . . Still such a great story to follow. As for the "pick me" scene: Painful to watch because so many women have been there. After Derek rejected her, I enjoyed watching Meredith's growth as she went through that pain, becoming stronger. Also did justice to Derek's relationship with Addison, who was more than a cliche first wife. The outcome turned out to be very satisfying!
the pick me scene showed that Mer’s vulnerability and showed her letting her guards down for the things she love and care about
I’m gonna cry if they don’t make like at least 3-4 more seasons
Go all the way to 20 please!! What’s a few more. Round even number.
I love her. I am 60 and still watching reruns.
What makes this show so great is that it's like a real hospital. People come and go all the time but the essence of the hospital itself is always there.
Keep it going. I am 73 and it keeps living. Please stay on. Please meredith
Im so proud of Ellen, shes amazing
I love Grey's and I will watch as long as Meredith is on the show.
Yes I love that Meredith ages on it gracefully but observably. It’s true to medical staff that work long hours and often look older than we should from stress and 12 hr shifts. But when she’s done there needs to be a spin off of Zola back at grey Sloan becoming a neurosurgeon and maybe Bailey as a male nurse!
I hope it lasts longer. I want to see her help DeLuca get the help he needs and they can be together. He is so gentle and compassionate with her. I hope everyone is happy and well when they do end the show. I just hope it’s not ending now.
*sighs in season 17*
Mer was always one of my fav characters and her acting was always amazing...yes Dereck and Cristina are amazing too but no more than she is:)
I MISS GEORGE AND LEXI THEY WERE MY FAVORITE!!!😭😓😥
Just out of curiosity, why? My favorites were Christina and Lexi.
Same
@@v.t.3064 idk they were just funny and cool🤷♀️😁😥
My favourite of all time is Lexie, I feel hurt and targeted by her death like it HURT when she died lol
For me, Meredith's " Pick me, Choose me, Love me" was a powerful scene as it was the first time she opened up and allowed herself to be vulnerable. I know anyone out there who is a guarded person gets how hard that can be.
Definitely don't want this show to end! During the time which they have been away I have binged watched there episodes over & over on Netflix...I was so happy knowing they were finally returning. This has got to be the best weekly running series I've ever watched in my entire life! To all of the cast on Grey's you do an amazing job. Keep up the great work. Look forward to seeing you for many years to come. ❤ U all stay safe....
As much as I love Grey's and wish it could go on for many more years, I still think and will always think that they could've ended the show on episode 300 when Mer won the Harper Avery. To me, that episode was so well written and portrayed beautifully. I wouldn't have been mad at all. It would've been a perfect episode to end. Although I'm extremely curious to see how they're gonna continue with season 17. There are only two options, one would be a cliche while the other would I feel like end the show prematurely depending on how the script is written.
Need more of greys anatomy.
Have you watched every single episode in every season? This show has been going on for years and years now.
It’s a good show don’t get me wrong, but I binged it in 2 months over the summer, and even I think it’s time to wrap it up. I’m not saying now, but soon.
I need more seasons!!! I’m obsessed my 3 rd time watching greys
I don’t want the season to end. It is a great show. It influenced me in so many ways and also, a great show when you are working in the field of human services and psychology. It helps to see what is expected. I know I take notes watching the show and it helps me become a better counselor and mentor advocate for others. I say continue the show. If season 17 ends on a good note it definitely should continue but if not then I guess it’s good blue. I can binge watch and rewatch the show millions of times and react to it many times and it never gets old. The show sends messages that you wouldn’t expect and I love it.
Would absolutely love to see more seasons of Grey's!!!
Definitely want to see more!
I think when your so in love with a person you can choose to change your typical reactions. You can change as a whole. To fit into this love that your feeling.
I think showing your love without caring for the risk and how you look like in that moment. Is true strength as well.
YES ANOTHER SEASON PLEASE!
Keep them coming please 🙏
I would love to see more Meredith Grey's shows!!! I really enjoy her shows, I pray she continues to do more show
I love this video! great job on the breakdown!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
More seasons please!
Yes, please. My companion during Covid. I love this show
Yea I definitely want to see another season!
I really want to see Elis,Zola and Bailey become surgeons and possibly have Eliz fall inlove with Jo's kid....not saying that she has one but-
Need more of greys anatomy! It's my favourite show. I ve been watching all the 16 season two times and I want to know what is going next season . Benjamine from South of France.
Why do people say Derrick it’s Derek
If you read the FULL instagram post at 9:17 she was dedicating the season to all fallen Healthcare workers not to the characters in the show...
I will watch this on repeat as it is my happy place.
YES YES YES. PLEASE. MANY MORE SEASONS. PLEASEEE
I really do hope they do more seasons
That stunt double shoulda sued💀
More episodes please
I'm Sorry to disagree but the rating may still be good but the storyline is really poor written with certain exception.. Alex exit Is One example of that, or even how they basically ruined Maggie, She was so good and interesting in season 12 and i shipped her with DeLuca now shes Just there... And how not to talk about Arizona and April's exit, they deserved Better! It would be nice to have an entire season with the old cast (those Who are still Alive in the show oc) and then give It a good ending, i love them but it's time.
I agree, it hurts how the old cast is leaving but Ellen is the only one that isn’t. I feel like they can’t see that greys anatomy has done it’s part and that it’s ready to move on. I want the old cast back 100%. what would have made it better is keeping Cristina and Derek like they where the most important people except Meredith. When Sandra and Patrick left I wasn’t sure if I would be able to watch the show it hurts to much, and I think they should’ve stopped right before Sandra decided to leave greys anatomy.
I think they should stop at season 20. Even number and a special number
@@katherinehetu5717 Exactly, the writers have made so many mistakes with there storylines its not even good anymore
@@nojokes5222 I agree with the mistakes but I like season 14-15-16 since it’s where Meredith is happy again and it’s becoming more interesting while season 12-13 was trash nothing happened and Meredith was in grief. Meredith and deluca love each other and it shows. Meredith had 1 true love and it was Derek but deluca is coming close to being like Derek, but I know he will never be like Derek.
Yeah its been dragged out too long. Now I only watch out of habit. The storyline and writing has seriously declined
I hope it never ends!
I love Meredith in the later seasons 💕
I would like to be more episodes more than 20
I really love this serial!
Yes you definitely have to keep it going!!
She is AMAZING
you guys literally read my mind- i was literally just watching the thumbnail scene...
If they do end it should be an even number not an odd one and I also want to see if the kid's become great doctors. I also want to see if Meredith ends up with another doctor or not.
Please keep the show going....its the best
I love Greys I don't want it to ever end🥰😍 I hope it keeps going

I love grey's Anatomy so much Meredith please don't leave
I love the show so much
Isn’t there going to be a season 19? I really want to see more.
When hearing the statements and quotes, it’s like the same type of stuff that Meridith grey would say. Empowered women in and outside the show👍🏼
season 20 at LEAST cmon :(
Yes more seasons, I need my grey's anatomy its there only thing I have to look forward to
Yes I want another season
there better be a few more seasons or else ima throw some hands. but ellen has played and amazing roll and deserves the world, but they need to have more seasons!!!
What I like about Greys is that the characters are layered and somewhat contradictory in their personalities - just like real people. Meredith isn’t a poster child for feminism or always a fantastic person. Sometimes she’s weak, sometimes she’s arrogant, sometimes she’s hurtful and selfish. But that doesn’t mean she can’t also be empowered, or loyal, or caring. She’s multifaceted. That, to me, is what I really appreciate about the character and what I’ve been missing a bit in the past couple of seasons where she suddenly became everybody’s darling.
Yep, is there a show without Sandra? :<
But yah, S17 Ep.1 and 2 is out now!!!
Yes we want more Grey’s!!!
I hope Meredith doesn’t leave Greys Anatomy because its based on her.
Shonda said that when Ellen is done, Grey’s is done.
OMGGGGG HES BACK HES BACK HES BACKKKKKKKKKKK
I want to see more seasons. I love Grey's and will be sorry when it ends.
Keep 'em coming, Ellen! You're giving great actors good jobs when work is slim. Besides, we gotta figure out how Meredith figures out how to work through losing Alex. She can't be happy for him 100%. He left her alone, abandoned her, without notice. And she needs to figure out how to get over Andrew. She needs a love like McDreamy again! One who is worthy of her and her kids. Andrew wasn't. The power was unbalanced. She needs to find a very powerful man who pines for her, like Derek did and who she wants, but maybe they don't realize they each want to be with the other. Maybe lots of miscommunication forces them apart. And, she needs a new person. One who climbs in HER bed, maybe. Let HER be the sound voice, of you want her to be more mature now. @shondarhimes
I think Riggs was that guy... I was devastated when he left with Megan... especially because if it was just between Meredith and Megan and where he was and how he felt... he would choose Meredith. I think he wanted to choose her and Meredith told him to go... bc of the kid and Megan. However bc Riggs was a good guy who had that kind of annoyingly obsessed with Meredith that Derek did with the constant flirting and the bickering back and forth about how Meredith felt about them bc they knew she liked them before she would admit it... I’m rewatching it in season 13 right now and there’s a lot of Derek in Riggs even though they’re different... but just like Derek had to try and make things work with Addison when she came to Seattle... and that broke merediths heart at the moment it happened... but when they became friends again Meredith said she understood why Derek had to try with addi... because he wouldn’t be Derek if he didn’t give him and addi another shot so that there would be no regrets type thing.. no what if’s if you know what I mean. So now with Riggs... I mean Megan basically came back from the dead... and Riggs going off with Megan to live bc Meredith tells him to... just seems like a similar arch for Meredith and Riggs.. like because Riggs is a good guy... Meredith would want him to have the chance to try it out with Megan so there’s no what if’s. I duno I can see parallels between those two relationships but guess we will see. I forgot about mcwidow... can’t even remember what Happened with that guy lol
I BALLED at the marigold episode
yess i want to see more greys
I wouldn’t complain if greys ran forever lol my all time favorite show- would LOVE to see more seasons 😭🙏🏼
