Honestly it would've helped if you played shadow warrior 2013 and maybe the original first. You can see how 2013 was such a success and loved for certain reasons, and the devs try to cram the good elements into the sequel and fail. I'd still say it's a fun game if you don't want to be snobby about it, but compared to shadow warrior 2013 it sucks. Bold move at the end too- the devs didn't procedurally generate most story missions and things like ADS weren't added to "not scare off cod gamers" but have always been here. You are trying to directly compare it to doom for some reason rather than its predecessor.

    • @DJPeachCobbler
      @DJPeachCobbler  Před 4 lety +93

I should've compared it to Doom 2016 more than Eternal. And Strafe, Dusk, Serious Sam, etc. Just the general run-and-gun old school shooter, as opposed to just one of them.
The level design is procedural, individual rooms were designed by hand, but they are put together procedurally.
Was aiming down sights and having a sprint button there in the original Shadow Warrior from the 90s? Or Shadow Warrior 2013? I haven't played Shadow Warrior 2013, although people have been recommending it often in the comments, I might check it out.
As it stands, I don't think now that SW2 lacked confidence so much as it lacks focus. It seems to play like every shooter under the sun, and I prefer games with more focused design.

    • @surviigecko7058
      @surviigecko7058 Před 4 lety +42

@@DJPeachCobbler I agree, sw2013 had ADS but it felt a lot better there (as did gunplay in general, you have 6 guns so all have their use). Also some mission levels in sw2 aren't procedural, but all side quests and some main sorry ones are as you described. Also it might help playing through SW2013 on insane difficulty as it feels a lot more rewarding that way, when you play on lower difficulties it's a bit too forgiving (same with SW2). But SW2013 is one of my top 3 singleplyer games of all time so I really hope you enjoy it when you get around to it! (It does have issues though, it takes bullet sponges to another level and the map design gets pretty bland late-game).

    some answers for 6:46
    - yes, it's a fast and chaotic old school shooter.
    - there are skills and experience points because the game wants to give you an abundance of ways to customize your experience. between the skills, the weapon upgrades and the weapons themselves, there are an insane amount of build varieties, some upgrades range from just stat boost, to some completely changeing how the weapon works. it is important to state that every system of this game can be individually ignored during a playthrough on normal difficulty.
    - this is a sort of preference, but every mission has some text before taking it. i discovered on my 2nd play through, that you can skip everything and still be in the loop, due to that text. the cutscenes are there if you want them.
    - skills or magic powers are again there to provide variety for play styles, and on higher difficulties they are essential i would argue. for example if you go for a melee build, spells are very useful for controlling enemies while you fly around like a madman tornado. you can also upgrade your healing spell with a body artifact so that it costs no mana. and you can become an unkillable meditank, the downside of the upgrade is that health drops do 0 heal.
    - ADS is not required all the time, it depends on the build. so all weapons have a miss stat on them, which sometimes can be inconsequential, or be lowered by artifact upgrades. but some upgrades like akimbo actually increase this in the hundreds of %. personally i used it on the bow at long range and on the duke grenade launcher. i put a split shot upgrade on it, which made it shot 3 grenades, but they were very spread out and i also had a charge shot upgrade on it. so i would dash in the air while charging it, ADS below me on an elite target, and then release to melt it. really fking satisfying.
    - it takes so long to reload because the game wants you switching weapons, you have 8 weapon builds that you can equip. in an encounter, you would basically dash around looking for specific positioning to unload every weapon on appropriate targets, and then finish them off with melee.
    - the hub is there so if you find yourself needing some specific upgrades for a level you can access it in the stores. you have a lot of money, so i usually hunt upgrades by resetting the stores. it is also a nice game area, like the wang cave i guess
    - sprinting is there but i never use it, because you can string dashjumps. dash - jump-jump, and another dash that can change directions mid-air, maintaining velocity, then imediately as you hit the ground repeat. you move extremely fast like this, sprinting is there for when you can't do that consistently i think. also you don't have sprinting as default, because with the sprint speed it's really hard to get precise shots if you build for that, especially with some movement speed upgrades. so it's there as an extra layer of control for movement.
i really want to make a video on this because i think SD2 is hard slept on. sorta like darksiders 2. really rich experience, i also had no idea the levels were procedural generated.

Games are forced because I have no hands and have to accomplish something to see more, therefore any game play at all is "forced." Your argument is wet paper, my guy. The devs wanted this to be in the game, it serves a purpose. There's variety in builds and how you approach combat. To say that's "forced mechanics that don't need to be there" is like saying Doom doesn't need a chainsaw, just give the player ammo drops, or the glory kills are forced because enemies can just drop more medkits. These things add to the game's stylization and approaches to combat. And I say this as a guy who really doesn't like SW2 that much. I pushed through the campaign in like 10 hours because I liked the first one and immediately deleted it afterwards. 1 was MUCH better, but I hate seeing this dismissal of a creator's vision as, "Unnecessary mechanics."

You made some good points, especially about the 'comedy' in the game, but I'm willing to go as far as to say that SW2 is better than Doom 2016, gameplay wise. Doom Eternal is a masterpiece and it beats SW2 by a landslide, but hear me out.
The gameplay loop in SW2 is good. Not only is it good, it's satisfying. Yes, it's a bit everywhere in terms of mechanics but I kinda like that. Every mechanic feels like it has its place and is even fleshed out. The gem upgrade mechanic is actually really fun. The ability to customize each gun to serve its own purpose allows for some great combinations. Eternal gives you a load out which has its own applications, and so does SW2 if you think about each gun in the same way.
I've beaten SW2 on the hardest difficulty (ignoring the Insanity difficulties because those are unfun imo), and I've beaten it with guns only, melee only and even gemless. All are possible if you tailor your build correctly. For example, make sure to have at least one weapon of every elemental type and exploit enemy vulnerabilities. I like having a melee with HP on kill and a chainsaw type weapon with Life Drain. Aside from that I love the sawn off with damage and crit and a mini gun with ammo save chance to keep firing it for longer. Plus I never have to reload because I weapon swap often and have the 'auto reload' skill maxed out so every gun is passively reloaded after 20 seconds (long enough for me to cycle through most of my weapons).
The game looks a bit ugly, especially the NPC animations, and sure the random level generation and story is unpolished to say the least, but the gameplay shouldn't be slept on. It's the most fun FPS aside from Doom Eternal and I love both for different reasons.
But yeah the dialogue is cringe city and the jokes do NOT land.
    That's my short rant. Thanks.

Regardless, I do think the inclusion of sprint, aiming down sights, and reloading drags the game down, but I could definitely see how someone could enjoy it.
Is Shadow Warrior 2 lacking confidence? Maybe. But to be honest, I think its real issue is that it lacks focus, and I wish I'D focused on that in this video.
In the end, a few mechanics that I think feel out of place didn't "kill" this game
      Regardless, thanks for watching

Because at the end of the day, designing the game to be popular came before designing the game to be good. They didn't care about making a fun interesting game, they cared about making a shadow warrior game above all else and couldn't be fucked taking financial risks to do it.
If you loved the swordplay, that's fine, good for you. But that doesn't mean you should be happy with the game as a whole. Because unless the developers are pushed to adapt, that swordplay will never take centre stage over all the mediocre parts of the game.

I respectfully disagree on a lot of points here. Shadow Warrior 2 is flawed in several ways, but not due to insecurity or laziness. Some things in particular:
    1. Procedural generation isn't an inherently 'lazy' approach to level design. I'm hardly an expert, but I've experimented with game development and know that that procedural generation has its own set of challenges. I wasn't in the room when the developers chose to add procedural areas, but I'd wager it was an experimental attempt to keep the levels fresh between playthroughs. Whether that was successful is a different matter. It was good enough for me, but apparently not right for you. That's the price of progress; sometimes things go wrong.
    2. The fusion between older and newer shooter mechanics doesn't mean they were trying to please the CoD-craving masses. I think Wang's default movement is plenty fast for combat and the sprint function just helps with traversing the larger areas quickly. Also, there's nothing inherently wrong with boomer-shooter inspired moment-to-moment gameplay with some RPG mechanics on the side. It's all about how the different genres are blended together. Borderlands 2 is an excellent shooter with RPG mechanics (and was likely an inspiration for SW2). Plus, SW2's cards were a neat mix of a skill tree and loot-based progression, and I hope they return in SW3. The weapon upgrades didn't fare nearly as well imo, but again, failed experiments are the price of progress.
    3. I agree that most of the humor is too stupid. It's probably the weakest part of the writing. But if it's trying to compensate for the writing quality, there frankly isn't much to compensate for. Let's start with the characters: they're well-realized (if annoying as hell at times), each with unique worldviews and desires. Larry is a demon trying his best to fit into the human world. Kamiko is a young prodigy who's out of her depth, trying to stay sane in a crazy situation. Wang is a bastard with a heart of gold (yes, I saw your video about 'serious' games) who gets on people's nerves with his "deeply stupid" sense of humor (to be clear, that last part doesn't excuse the lame jokes). The plot puts them all in uncomfortable situations, forcing them to interact in entertaining ways. And isn't that what a good plot should do? Point is, the game's going for more than 'dumb fun action.' Credit where it's due, yeah?
But yeah, the humor's pretty stupid and I didn't like it much either.
Of course, subjectivity is implied in any art criticism and everyone will come away with a different experience. Yeah, SW2 has issues. Lots of 'em. But you can't say it didn't try.

The gameplay is what carried me through the game, and honestly, it was great. I loved playing it, and especially eviscerating enemies, particularly with the melee weapons. It was fun to move around, to fight, heck even the magic was fun to play around with too. Says the game lacks confidence when compared to doom forgets all that Doom & Eternal took from Shadow Warriors 1&2 . Maybe your just wrong about this one, but hey everyone has an opinion. After watching the whole video, I gotta say did you even play the game? You just get so much wrong. Levels are not procedurally generated some areas are procedurally generated. “Why does he have powers?”... so you clearly didn’t play Shadow Warrior 2013, where he is in a burning house & makes a pact with Hoji; via learns his first power aka Healing. “Why is there skills, skill points?” To help with combat it doesn’t take anything away from it. Like what does having skill points have to do with the pace of combat something that is considered before or after, not during. “Why is there so many long & painful cutscenes?” Long hardly, painful up for debate. Lo Wang’s whole character is not caring about what he says to some extent & being immature. He’s a nerd. I could go on for a while about things you got wrong or just misrepresent, but you more than likely won’t listen or read this.

Why does it lack confidence? Honestly when you look at it from its predecessor, it simply was just ahead of its own time, when you go too fast all you can see is basically a void. Now that may sound like some pretentious fortune cookie bullshit, but here's the thing....Shadow Warrior especially with its sequel seemingly didn't just understood itself enough to have that kind of confidence.
Doom certainly did, releasing within the same year, and only then after Eternal came out did 3 had some Wang to bring out the cringy but lovable Lo Wang humor even if it was a little too late.
When you think about it, Shadow Warrior always had this problem, competing with Blood on its original release, but only in Shadow Warrior can you play as walking asian stereotype and have a great time doing it.

Love how Im reading these comments. Ah chuckles galore.
As a player of both DE and SW2... Im on the fence really.
    I love both, no lie.
DE cause well... its doom. Thats it. My only enemy? Swarms and playing on nightmare first run cause masochism. (Plus Ive been on a run of playing games hardest difficulty first go, cause then that way you learn better and quicker) story is little but encapturing (especailly the overarching story of eternal)
SW2 for me, has, to me at least, few flaws. Yes theres a lot of guns, yes theres a lot of fiddling with gems, yes theres BS passives, cutscenes and all the stupid crap Flying Wild Hog put into it. But to me, nothing matters, as long as Im having fun.
I like fiddling with the gems, cause I get that many I can make a quick profit off selling shit ones, and compare the ones I have to maximise their effectiveness on a weapon. Leading to the fact that I have at least 2 weapons with 1 of 4 elements, so I know Im ready to deal with anyone and anything.
I like the gunplay, and barely had to ADS (gotta do it more often then before cause removed crosshair) and it feels nice. Its solid, feels punchy, and just makes me feel like a badass like Doom Slayer, mixed with Deadpool, cause Wang wisecracks.
The story is weird, but I mean... weirder stuff has happened before?
My only gripe? Finding weapons and dealing with loss of chi. Cause the flow is ruined whem your low on health, no medkits around, and you dont have enough chi to start healing. Thats my only gripe. I like using vanish for the extra damage bonus so I can one shot a enemy.
I like chi blast for a quick relief. I like spikey poles cause... spikes.
But like youve said. Everyone is entitled to a opinion. This is mine. I like both games, and kinda been binging SW2 recently, along with the Far Cry series.

The levels in SW2 aren't procedurally generated, they're only *randomized*.
There is a limited amount of pre-designed layout modules used for the main missions for each "tile set", side missions then recycle them in a semi-random selection of two "tiles" each.
Not actual procedural generation of map content by any stretch of the term, had it been you'd be getting brand new and unique maps every time you played a side mission - and you aren't, you're running the same repeating modules over and over and over, just in another *potentially* new arrangement (but the next time I see dense town linking to a river village I'm gonna barf)

Liked the game, completed it multiple times and i can say that jokes are rarely funny and reloading and RPG elements are just tedious. The RPG elements gave the game some Gun switching incentive to swap to a better element but that could've been achieved without the RPG elements. Stopping after every big fight to sort out gun stats weren't fun.
Honestly just played it like a faster version of doom 2016 (in terms of using guns), and after playing eternal, i put in more weapon switching which made the game fun on subsequent new game plus since I rarely have to deal with the RPG stuff because my guns already have the best stuff i could fit in it. BUT most of the time i was just using the insane mobility (Dash jump lets you keep your dash momentum) with the decent array of melee weapons.
Edit: forgot to say that this was a great video and a lot of great points were made

In all seriousness, how much you enjoy something is subjective. I said why I hate the game, and supported it with why I think that's the case. The cutscenes and dialogue pushed me towards suicide, but I could see how someone would appreciate the pure callousness of it.
I'm making a video about Doom Eternal right now where I specifically praise the fact that the game enforces a very specific playstyle, but I know some prefer more of a sandbox that allows player expression.
