  • Water puppetry, known as múa rối nước in Vietnamese, is a traditional art form that dates back to the 11th century during the Ly dynasty. Originating in the rice fields of the Red River Delta, this unique performance combines intricate puppetry, music, and storytelling. The puppeteers stand in water throughout the show, using the movement of the water to create drama and tell a story.
The puppets are made of buoyant fig wood and painted with lacquer. They are skillfully maneuvered using bamboo sticks and strings. The shows depict scenes of village life, festivals, traditions, and quirky characters inspired by Vietnamese personalities.
