Jonny, we need to introduce you wildfowlers across the pond to Jet Sleds, Tangle Free Panel blinds and Dive Bomb silhouette duck and goose decoys. We know how to kill ducks here in the USA!
Just to get this in right at tge start. The intention was to flight the mallard in near darkness, coming from our South. We'd have been hidden in the dark stripe of the mud cliff, to a bird above us. When the flight had finished we would have turned around and used the bank as cover from geese flying in from the opposite direction. In this video, the camera is sitting almost on the mud and the consequence of this is it makes it look as if we were sitting in the open, which we weren't. The goose flight never materialised so we didn't bother to conceal ourselv😅es properly.

As always whether here or on your marshes, good friends, good dogs and good conversations are always as important as the number of birds harvested. As a lifelong waterfowler, I enjoy seeing what you do when adventuring out into the salt marshes. Keep enjoying your wild places too and we loved hearing about curlew hunting!
@@vcrudelejr thank you for your kind words. We had hoped to film some punt gunning but I'm 6ft 4ins and Jonny is 6ft 8ins and the punt is simply not big enough! Hopefully we will get to play with the punt gun if not the punt, on camera.
@@nickhorten97 Now that would be something to see! I grew up on the shores of the San Francisco Bay. I hunted our Suisun and Petaluma Marshes for canvasbacks, teal, pintails and wigeon and read books on the punt gunners of times past. Market gunning with punt guns was part of the history of what were known as the Baymen. They made their living shooting waterfowl, harvesting oysters and fishing to supply the restaurants and markets of the early 1900's. What a time to have been alive to experience it. Punt guns are no longer legal here in the USA. I hope you guys can find a sculling boat big enough to use with the punt gun and sneak in on a flock on video!
@@vcrudelejr market gunning on a small scale continued in the UK until the early 1970s. I was fortunate enough to have been trained in the art of punt gunning by three former professional fowlers all anxious to pass on their skills before they passed to the great duck marsh in the sky.
I'm no expert by any means but I wonder how your luck would improve if you put up a camo net like you do pigeon shooting? At least conceal better than sitting out in the open. I also understand making fun of we Americans, jealousy is not becoming of you two 😜🤣
Hi Ray, the intention was to use the cover of near darkness to intercept an early morning mallard flight coming from the south, the two of us being concealed in the dark stripe of the mud cliff behind us. We would then turn around and use the mud cliff as cover from canada geese flighting from the north. In the final event, neither turned up. Additionally, with no cameraman, the camera was placed on the ground which makes it look as if we were far more obvious than we actually were to a bird flying overhead. I would, of course, have used a net if the circumstances were different. I`ve done it this way in this location with considerable success over many years. We were`nt making fun of Americans, we were taking the mickey, using brutal humour for effect. We do that to each other with far more vehemence. It sounds very rude if you misunderstand it for which I apologise. I have a large number of American in laws, courtesy of my wife`s family. It took them some time to understand how some savage observational humour would elicit laughter from the recipient. Incidentally, I am jealous of some of the waterfowling opportunities that you have.
