Hey! Michael and I did not, but SHOULD HAVE used some kind of rubber undercoating to protect the inside of the van from rust. I'm quoting directly from the Sprinter Van Conversion sourcebook (bit.ly/2ivzCjG) (which is 100% amazing, go check it out) and he has this to say about materials that will help prevent rust.
"Rubberized undercoating (cheaper option) - Many types of spray-on and brush-on rubberized undercoatings available, including 3M Underseal (spray-on)(amzn.to/2jimPOT), Rusfre undercoating (brush-on)(amzn.to/2iFBNj6), Hippo Liner (brush-on) (amzn.to/2j2iC0C). Note: If you do use an undercoating, make sure that the entire surface is very clean and very dry, or else the undercoating will actually promote rust by trapping moisture."
So! Make sure to put some of that on first to prevent rusting on the inside! For now, I'm keeping her well ventilated and taking advantage of my two dehumidifiers. Best of luck to you!

Second part of the Sprinter Van is done! The insulation process did not take that long.
We used Insulfoam 3/4 in. x 2 ft. x 4 ft. R-2.89 Insulating Sheathing for the ceiling,
Rmax Thermasheath-3 2 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. R-13.1 Polyisocyanurate Rigid Foam Insulation Board for the walls and the 17.6 oz. High-Strength 90 Spray Adhesive to stick the foam insulation in (amzn.to/2abLLaH). I wouldn't recommend using that stuff though, it off gassed a lot and as you can see in the video, it wasn't as strong as we hoped.
For the spray foam I used Great Stuff Window and Door ( amzn.to/2auBqEC) and then later the Great Stuff Foam Gaps and Cracks (amzn.to/2adYcMW). I think both worked fine, but the gaps and cracks expanded a lot more.
Next up: Fan installation! Eeek!

Hey all! Since uploading this video there's been a lot of discussion about whether or reflectix causes rust... I'm going to do some more research on it and see what I find! I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but I am not actually using any reflectix. The foil stuff you see in this video is Frost King Duct insulation. The difference is one side of the frost king is adhesive and I've heard that will actually act as a moisture barrier and prevent rust. However, I do have some insulating bats that have the two sides of foil in the van.... so we shall see! More to come soon!

For what it's worth i think you've done a very neat and tidy job ,well done,from Ireland.
Window/door spray foam is great for that,,it doesn't expand as much as other foam.It would drive more soundly if you were to drill every 6 or 8" into the hollow studs and spray foam them.run any wires for future after you drill your holes,but before you spray foam.it will also stop any condensation from entering a warm van when your in cooler weather.

Kaya Lindsay all rubberized coating stuff has warning "vapor harmful, inhaling harmful" and this stuff has strong chemical smell. . are you sure you want have this in your van?
I just finished painting mine with a very low VOC truck bed liner. It's been almost a week and I can no longer smell it. It is true you need to be choosy on all things we put in such a small place. I need to do a little research on what is best to stain my wood with once the walls are up. But next step is insulation :)
I've used POR15 on a few car restos in the past and never had rust issues afterwards. Goes on like you're painting with water it's so thin.
PS - we start insulation on our new van (our 1st van build), also our 5th van home tomorrow :)
Not sure why I started to read the comments! But your videos have been super useful I've watched them all, building my van out this summer! All I can say is way to go! It's definitely a learning process, ignore those Debbie downers in the comments. Also thanks for the tip on the undercoating! Have you noticed a big difference in the summer for the van staying cooler? Going to be in sunny California.
It's pretty temperate where I live, so being hot/cold in the van isnt a huge issue. But if you live somewhere cold I would 100% put more into the insulation than I did!

What should you use instead of spray foam to seal the gaps in the polyiso?
You can use spray foam, just make sure that it is a closed cell foam, GM is a good one to use and they sell it at walmart. Good stuff is open cell and will cause rust. As far as reflectix causing rust, I have never heard that but yes, in order for it to work it dose need an air gap. If you put it right on the metal, the only thing it is going to do is let the heat or cold transfer right through it and into the van.
One Man's Adventure I don't think reflective causes rust, it's just useless without the airgap that is stated on the packaging. No airgap, no R value.
your series is so cool man im from the uk and im going to do this i have been doing so much research on everything i finally understand the solar power wiring and that did, you have a wiring diagram? nice work on your van its amazing! im still trying trying to get my head around where the fuse box goes and all that but ill get there what van did you used millage year and make? keep the videos coming!, if my vans turns out amazing im going to go to europe for 6months and then maybe live in it houses are to expensive

How did you make insulation product decisions? Did you follow the Sprinter Van Conversion sourcebook? Why didn't you chose 3M insulate? Thx
Reflectix on sheet metal is useless. Wear a respirator. How are you going to wire the van after you installed insulation. Wiring goes first, just like when a house is being when you walk into the house after it is framed out you see wiring and plumbing everywhere but no sheetrock up. Same for van. If you wired the van easily regardless (irregardless if you're from Texas;) I would love to hear how you did it. Thanks.

did you use the thicker insulation in the ceiling and floor and the 1/2" on the walls? was it polyiso? what was the silver sheet you used underneath, was it reflectix? thanks

Did the insolation cut down the rattling road sound while driving too?
Yes! So much so. When we bought the van is was a rattling drum. With the insulation and everything it quieted down significantly.
Yeah, I think you need to have dead airspace between the metal and your insulation??

Best of luck to you! I would draw out your plan first and make sure you know exactly where you want everything to go. Also, take it in baby steps. It really helped me to break the build into basic steps like, floors, insulation, electrical, bed, etc. Other then that I would do some research and ask for help! Bring your community together and see who knows how to do what. People are stoked to get behind cool projects :)

Well you seriously destroyed the value of that vehicle. Good luck pulling all that garbage apart if you need to replace a body panel. Ruined it.
Jeezus Nancy, lots of people do this to their vans. Life must suck when you are so negative. Also, can't help but notice that when a guy does this, it's all back slaps and complements, but if a girl does it, she's ruined the van. What gives?

Is this a tutorial on how to do it wrong? Do you see OEM RV manufacturers using any of this material? Then don't. That foam board will come loose and squeak when it rubs. Expanding foam? I hope this is a joke, because it's a hack job.
