It’s HARD to say goodbye. #56

  • Atlantic crossing: 7 weeks to go.
I don't get emotional often, but saying goodbye to our friends, leaving Almerimar (this odd place that we came to love so much) and seeing everyone go on their decks to wave us goodbye brought a few tears to my eyes.
It had been a while that I wanted to talk about how constantly changing environment impacts us emotionally, both in positive and less positive ways. In this life, we have to close chapters to open new ones a little more often than when we were sedentary, and I sometimes found it difficult to deal with (even when I am really looking forward to what's coming!).
As this adventure continues to challenge us, both Ryan and I learned to accept that saying goodbye is part of the journey, and it has been a tremendous opportunity to grow.

Hey guys, just wanted to give you some really big kudos on your commitment to safety onboard the Polar Seal. I follow several sailing channels and yours is the only one to stress the importance of life jackets and AIS beacons underway with safety lines rigged during the night watches. It is so easy for something untoward to happen unexpectedly and rapidly and I commend you for your diligence. Good job!!!

Thanks Bob. Its really hard some times... when it gets warm and the weather is nice, putting kn the lifejacket is the last thing you want but its good habbit. Ryan

Hi, thank you for the video. I discovered your channel totally by chance-or perhaps not! I live in Crete where I moved following the death of my wife 16 years ago. I realised a while ago that possibly, were it not for my grief, that I missed an opportunity to realise my dream so I'm trying to sell my house, buy a boat and after rediscovering my sailing skills, head West, through the straits of Gibraltar and head to the Caribbean via the Canaries and Cape Verde. So thank you, an amazing coincidence and I look forward to viewing the rest of your programmes.

So true! I can't agree anymore. Saying goodbye to new friends that just met on travels is so emotional. But it is still fun as it's making a new way of a new start everyday in a good way but the memories are never forgotten with that person that you have met. 😊 Keep on sailing. â›”

    Beautifully expressed from your heart.
Yes, it is as if something has to ‘die’ to enable something else to be born, or blossom, and each reconnection is different from the last because of the space / time / experience in between. There is something ethereal in those moments.
To quote Ram Dass, it is as though ‘We are walking each other home.’

Thanks for putting this perspective into a video and sharing. Also wish I could be as relaxed as Ryan when leaving the dock embarking on a longer passage, my mind would be racing with thoughts at that point.

I can see the sadness you have at moving on and saying goodbye to these strangers that became good friends, and losing a loved one is always hard. Almerimar is definitely an odd place! We we're only there 2 days (sailing East about the same time as you were sailing West) I cant say we took to it the way you did. We have taken to Cartagena though where we are wintering now so we'll have the same sort of feelings leaving here. Good thing though is that it's more about the community than the place and I'm sure we'll meet up with sailing friends again as will you.
