- As a major fan of this band for more than a decade now, a video ranking all of their studio albums to date has been a long time coming.
These chapters are a bit of a spoiler, but there probably aren't a lot of surprises within this ranking so I don't think it'll matter too much:
0:00 - Intro
0:47 - ATUM
5:57 - Shiny & Oh So Bright
8:25 - CYR
10:54 - Zeitgeist
14:28 - Monuments to an Elegy
16:56 - Oceania
20:08 - Machina II
23:39 - Adore
25:42 - Machina/The Machines of God
28:19 - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
30:24 - Gish
33:08 - Siamese Dream

6:36 okay, not done. silvery sometimes video is soooooo fun. Sugar Ray dude is in the stage art for the 2018 tour and perform in the 30th anniversary show. BC and Mark McGrath never really met in the 90’s… a weird friendship/acquaintanceship.
Glad to see you back Shonky with your Music Analysis Videos. Great video, Smashing Pumpkins truly did have a great 5 album run. Also, I wondering if you ever go back to the Sonic Youth discography again in the future.
My Ranking of Smashing Pumpkins Albums:
11. Zeitgeist
10. CYR
9. ATUM
8. Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun.
7. Oceania
6. Monuments to an Elegy
5. Machina/The Machines of God
4. Adore
3. Gish
2. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
1. Siamese Dream
Silverfuck is such a Godly song.
Once I'm familiar enough with all of Sonic Youth's albums then I'll probably give the worst to best for them another shot.
I've listened to all their stuff but after NYC Ghosts and Flowers the albums are a bit harder to differentiate tbh lol
Machina is such an underrated era. I think the album does drag a little bit but most of the songs still hit, and they were also crushing it live during that era. There's a show on YT in I think Korea from 2000 where they play a lot of the Machina album and their energy is so on point.
agreed about MACHINA it’s extremely underrated imo. I’ve made my own versions with tracks from that era that works better overall just as an album experience. Still not quite sure what the concept is supposed to be though…
great video btw!
19:45 😱 Someone shares my view that "The Chimera" -> “Glissandra” -> ”Inkless” is the closest they’ve come to recapturing the glories of old!
I made this exact comment on Metal Trenches’ tier ranking 3 months ago! Great minds! 😂 (Although I was generous and included “Wildflower”, which has grown on me as a nice comedown…)
Anyway, nice video! Subbed! 👍
Thanks for putting this together. My personal list:
1. Siamese Dream
2. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
3. Adore
4. Gish
5. Machina II
6. Machina I
7. Oceania
8. Zeitgeist
9. Monuments to an Elegy
10. Cyr
11. Shiny and Oh So Bright
12. ATUM
Alas... the list is almost chronological, which doesn't bode well for future releases.
Nice ranking. There was a period where I did consider Machina II to be better than Machina I too, but in the end it's just a little too inconsistent for me
THE LEGEND HAS RETURNED
In general, album rankings shouldn't include compilations. But the Smashing Pumpkins discography has an exception to that rule. Pisces Iscariot is a unique and complete record, and fits somewhere in the top 5.
Been waiting for thisss let’s go
Shocked you rated Monuments above Zeitgeist!
I was thinking that I'd rather have a consistently average album than a good album with clearly wasted potential. But those two are more or less interchangeable in my ranking, I think
Siamese dream is 100% the best album the band ever did. I kind of always get irked when people say Mellon Collie is the best cause Ive never really gotten the hype behind it.
It’s WAY TOO LONG.
Agreed
Corgan should give up his obsession with creating conceptual albums.
Jeah well, i think he should do whatever the f#%k he wants.
0:29 I was about to rage stroke out and tell you to STFU. But then okay… j/k. 🙃 There isn’t a bad Pumpkins album. Hot take- Zeitgeist > Pisces. How isn’t it other than the mastering? WPC, the voice of my heart forever and always. 3:42 nooooooo, Spellbinding is a banger. Yes, it does make me want to tease my hair a bit and break out my arm warmers but Neymar I like teasing my hair and breaking out my arm warmers. That’s it for now, I guess. Hooray!
Good video, subbed 👍
hey, loved the video, could you possibly touch on gang of four, you mentioned them in a previous video and Id love to see a video on them, keep up the great content.
I like Gang of Four but I'm still only really familiar with Entertainment! at this point. So a video about them isn't likely tbh
I started disliking Pumpkins output from they did that Batman song. I tried to like Machina, but it was still utter bollocks after the tenth listen, so I listened no more and didn't listen to anything new until my wife got me a counterfeit copy of Zeitgeist that I listened to twice. I still listen to the earlier material- mostly Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie.
Atum in portuguese is the same word for tuna.
With Sympathy is the most Pumpkiny song (and probably best)on Shiny - go figure
I almost put in the video that it's quite a good song even though it reminds me of Try, Try, Try quite a lot haha
What's your take on Pisces Iscariot?
It's amazing. I'd potentially even put it above Mellon Collie
rank them in reverse order
I think Atum is just too long..but it has some great songs..probably some of the best material in 16 years. Act III was best in my opinion
