When I saw him in "The Brady Bunch" movies and on "The X Files" I didn't even recognize him!!! Only recently was my slow brain figure it out. I think it's because of his voice and lighter hair color.

nycinstyle 11 minutes ago (edited) I heard the show got commended by state and federal groups who are set up to help kids and adults who have intellectual disabilities. Lenny treated her like he does any other girl he really likes. He did not think he should speak "down" to her. He made her feel very special, because most people she meets talk differently to her and treat her differently. That was a big point of the show.
I can’t help but notice when watching a lot of old shows from back in the day, every episode leaves you feeling like you’ve learned a valuable life lesson. Something that’s noticeably absent from modern television.
It's also because these shows began with an episode and the storyline ended by the end of the episode. Modern sitcoms should be called, the never ending to be continued.
I can't believe they thought Lenny would be a danger to Amy! He may be a nuisance (a lovable one), a troublemaker, and a huge flirt but he is no dangerous threat. If anything, when he does show those signs, it's usually due to Squiggy leading it. On his own, Lenny is a lovable guy who any girl would be lucky to have.
His character was a womanizer though. He and Squiggy would always come into girls to sleep with them. They were afraid of good girls sleeping around too in those days and since Amy was ‘slow’ her mom and family were extra protective. They were afraid Amy could agree to sleep with him and him not knowing she was slow, he would agree. They also thought Lenny was an idiot (even if he wasn’t labeled). But he turned out to be smart and respectful here and really liked Amy.
“You know who the dummy is? you are!!” Great classic and powerful scene!! Squiggy got what he deserves after blabber it in front of everyone towards Lenny and Amy.
One of my favorite episodes Lenny was so sweet to her. He was such good guy . Wish he and Amy could have dated or at least become good friends through out the series too bad they didn’t show her again.
Even when Lenny pushed Squiggy and the way Squiggy stands up like "it's okay, I'm cool." Then goes back and he and Len make up. It was enjoyable to watch and memorable for me I remember that from when I was a 12 year old kid watching in the 1970s. They were great together as a comedy team.
Yes it was a stupid remark, but I don't think he said it in a mean spirited way. He was trying to explain to Lenny why everyone was freaked out that he and Amy were "missing". Squiggy isn't that intelligent so he just blurted it out in the crude language he knew.
You telling me that a woman just happens to go on a date like that? No! He orchestrated it! Lenny! Also, how did I never notice that Chuck was Lenny? Michael McKean has amazing range
I remember being horrified when he pushed Squiggy, all those years ago. That was so unexpected. Michael is brilliant in these scenes, showing a mass of untapped potential, at the time.
This was a great episode! It's never made clear how "retarded" Amy was - although usually it's a person with an IQ below 80. It's also important how everyone worried for Amy's safety. IRL there have been plenty of stories of mentally handicapped people who were taken advantage of sexually. Strange that no one thought to call Frank at the Pizza Bowl first when Amy went missing. One would think that would be the first place to check.
It's just a show. They probably would get upset and worried and think they may have walked around outside like to a park by them to talk by themselves without being bothered by the others inside. So, they split up. Squiggy went to one of their favorite hangouts to see if Len brought her there. Again, it's only a show. It's sad even 2 of the younger people in the small main cast are dead, now. Squiggy and Laverne. There were I think only 5 fulltime younger characters. Now 3. Shirley, Lenny, Raguso

Well back in that time (1950s) a lot of slow learners or shy people were labeled "retards" and separated from society or sent to the funny farm, where as today they wouldn't be ridiculed or looked down as different as much. Even those with high functioning autism today although somewhat different people, can be more functioning members of society.
+Debra White Yeah! What a way to tease us! Lenny could be very sweet and vulnerable at times. I have the series on DVD. Binge watching. :D BTW. In the Pizza Bowl scene after Squiggy comes in Amy's sweater seems to come and go.
Did anyone notice the Black guy in the background as an extra. His face is blurry but I'd be damned if it's not Lloyd Hanes who played a teacher on "Room 222." You can see it at time 4:18 (after Squiggy is thrown onto a table and then stands up).
Flip Flop 'I never realized that Sguiggy could say anything so hurtful. Lenny should have decked him a good one." My thinking is that the type of family show it was, it didn't lend itself to violence. So the closet thing to a physical reaction was for Lenny to first grab Squiggy and then in frustration and disappointment in his friend, throw him across the table.

Heck, Lenny's outrage alone should earn that.

I fell in love with this episode (and Lenny) the first time I saw it. He's such a sweetheart.
Sometimes it's hard to believe that Lenny is also David St. Hubbins of Spinal Tap. Very talented guy--for sure! This was a 'Great Episode' by the way.
Imo one of the greats

Lol. No. Old people just think they know it all, and love to look down on the generations that follow them.

I watched every season and this is my absolute favorite episode of all of them.
Lenny is the sweetest person ever. He is my number 1 crush... He's so cute...
He was a sweetie for sure. Never understood why they all thought he would hurt Amy.
They thought he would make a pass at her and she would be too naive to set up boundaries.
Ironically she made the pass at him.

I have always felt that way.

It's funny that you can see beyond the set on the far left, and see the millwork cabinet shimmy when he jumps over it.

The read I get on her is she wasn't slow in the normal way but more of someone with a learning disability. Like she processes information differently.
