    The soulution-755 phono stage has volume control and the same output stage as their preamp. It would be interesting to compare this direct to the poweramp vs via the preamp you have at the moment. I am betting 755 direct will sound better. This would be the scientific way to really address the preamp issue rather than just rhetoric.

    • @MichaelM-to4sg
      @MichaelM-to4sg Před 5 dny

      I believe the phono preamp is called 757, unless the 755 is its predecessor. I had a 757 in my home for 2 weeks to demo.
      I really liked the available inputs of 757; tape head pre, optical phono, low output MC and 42db MM. It would allow me to replace my CAT SL1 preamp w/phono, step up transformer, Manley tape pre and DS Audio pre. Unfortunately only the optical pre section was up to the musical standard of the component it would be replacing.
      The MC performance was close, a bit lower noise floor but I still preferred my silver wire Bent Audio SUT - CAT combo with its bigger and noticeably deeper soundstage that better placed instruments. There was also a noticeable difference depending upon cartridge as I mostly play only my Lyra Atlas mono MC these days. I still have a few other MC stereo cartridges; VdH, Benz, Shelter and Koetsu but I find myself mostly using a Grado Epoch or my DS Audio cartridges on stereo records. The Epoch was a REALLY bad match for the 757. An incredibly engaging cartridge sounded veiled, unengaging and lacking any fine detail.
      As bad as it was with the Grado, the performance was worse playing the tape head outs of my Ampex ATR102.
      Needless to say I returned the unit to my dealer. I even had the shop owner to my home for his opinion and he just shrugged his shoulders. I’ve never owned a Soulution product in past and obviously there’s a required synergy with certain components. I’d highly recommend anyone considering their preamps to be certain to demo them first.

      Most people that spend high dollar (or less.) on audio equipment have their cable brands they prefer, so it doesn't make sense for the audio equipment manufacture to buy a certain high end brand if the buyer isn't going to use it. Also, if they did that it would drive up the price of the component. Remember, audio equipment manufactures don't build cables. That's a whole nether business. Every audio component box I have has the power cord still twist tied and in the box.
