- Steam Threshing with a Portable Engine and a Threshing Machine, at the Glentleiten Living History Museum in the Bavarian Alps. The Steam Engine has 18 HP and was built in 1922 by Esterer in Altötting, the Threshing Machine was built 15 Years later by Ködel & Böhm in Lauingen. Both are located in Bavaria (Germany)

The Owner of this Steam Engine (and Operator in the Video) also owns a Steam Roller. Originally, I contacted him to make a Video with that instead, showing how to fire it up and how to drive it. We had to call that off for various Reasons, and the Steam Roller Video now is postponed to next Spring.

I'd like to show Steam Ploughing too, but that's rarely demonstrated in Germany. Because of the deeper Top Soil in Europe, Steam Ploughing is done with two Traction Engines positioned at both ends of the Field. The Traction Engines are equipped with a large Cable Winch under the Boiler, and they use that to haul the Plough from one Side of the Field to the other. The deep Top Soil would cause the Traction Engines to sink into the Field if they drove over it, hence they can't haul the Plough directly. In America, the Bedrock lies almost directly below the Ground Surface, hence it is possible to haul the Plough directly by the Traction Engine there.
I'll share a Video from another Channel tomorrow, that shows Steam Ploughing in Germany back in 2015. That's actually the second latest Time I found that Steam Ploughing was demonstrated here, the last was in 2017.
This is an interesting look at European threshing. I'm familiar with American practice using steam traction engines and threshing machines; both the steam engine and threshing machines are similar in design and operation to their European cousins but larger than the machines shown here. Bigger farms and greater grain production required larger equipment. My Dad was a water boy on a threshing machine crew in his youth. The machines were very expensive and traveled from farm to farm during harvest season. Here in the Midwest USA, there are popular threshing, saw milling and plowing exhibitions in late summer each year. It's wonderful these old machines have been restored to running condition to show what farming was like a century ago.
Both Machines here are small by European Standards too, especially the Threshing Machine. The Steam Engine actually is way overpowered for it. But looking at the Terrain at the beginning of the Video, it's hard to imagine how these Machines here were brought up there by Horse back in the Day, not to mention larger Machines than these here. Farms in Eastern Prussia (aka what is Poland today) had large Machines too, and these Farms were so huge, that they typically owned the Machines themselves instead of hiring a travelling Contractor or being in a Cooperative. Southern Germany like shown in the Video typically has many small Farms, and they get increasingly large the further north and east you go.

It actually was more of a Plan B; see my pinned Cpmment for more Information. Another great Agricultural Steam Video would be Steam Ploughing, but that's rarely demonstrated in Germany. Perhaps I can make a Video with a historic Combine Harvester (built in the late 60ies) next Year; I know a Place where I could drive such a Machine.

Die Dampfmaschine gehört Martin Hofbauer, siehe auch die Verlinkung in der Videobeschreibung. Neben einem ganzen Fuhrpark an Dampfmaschinen besitzt er eigentlich auch einen Dreschkasten, der hier ist aber vom Freilichtmuseum Glentleiten. Normalerweise wird er beim Dreschtag am 3. Oktober von einem Stationärmotor angetrieben, dieses Jahr war eben Martin Hofbauer mit seiner Dampfmaschine eingeladen.
Mit Martin Hofbauer war ich zunächst in Kontakt, weil ich mit seiner Dampfwalze ein Video machen wollte, wie man diese anheizt und damit fährt. Das musste leider abgesagt und auf nächstes Frühjahr verschoben werden, aber er hat mir diesen Dreschtag in Glentleiten als Alternative empfohlen. Ich werde ihn mal auf das Flensburger Dampf-Rundum ansprechen, was dieses Jahr so an Dampfmaschinen an Land da war, war echt traurig wenn man die Bilder von früher im Vergleich sieht, insbesondere vor 2013, als noch Dampflokomotiven auf der Hafenbahn fahren konnten. Das nächste Dampf-Rundum ist aber frühestens 2024, daher ist noch mehr als genug Zeit, bis ich im Frühjahr für die Dampfwalze bei ihm bin.
Flensburg war früher, als es noch dort stattfand wo jetzt die schicken Häuser stehen, echt eine schöne Veranstaltung. Später an der anderen Seite vom Hafen nicht mehr ganz so toll.
@@MichaelS3013 War das mal am Ostufer? Wie lange ist das denn her? Am Westufer war wohl immer der "Technikpark" in der Nähe der FSG, außer halt dieses Jahr, weil eh nur drei Dampftraktoren da waren. Außer dieses Jahr war ich halt noch nie beim Dampf-Rundum, daher kenn ich 2019 und früher nur vom Hörensagen und von Fotos. 2019 hab ich leider um wenige Wochen verpasst; ich hab von September 2019 bis August 2022 in Flensburg gewohnt.
Bei der nächsten Museumsnach in Basel wollte ich übrigens ein Video von der Dampfspritze im dortigen Feuerwehrmuseum machen, und bei der Gelegenheit auch mal das Dampf-Rundum vorschlagen. Ich bin ja auch ehrenamtlich auf der Cap San Diego tätig, und da war dieses Jahr eine Fahrt nach Flensburg vorgesehen, kurz nach dem Dampf-Rundum. Die musste letztlich abgesagt werden, weil es in Flensburg Probleme mit den Schleppern gab. Das ist übrigens auch der Grund, warum die Cap San Diego so lange in Kiel gelegen hat. Als diskutiert wurde, diese Fahrt auf nächstes Jahr zu verschieben, hatte ich vorgeschlagen, doch gleich bis 2024 zu warten, um dann am Dampf-Rundum teilnehmen zu können. Keine Ahnung was jetzt daraus wird, problematisch ist halt, dass in Flensburg sehr wahrscheinlich keine Tagesfahrten angeboten werden könnten.

It looks like it's non-reversing, fixed lead, unless there is some sort of shifting eccentric on the crankshaft.
