To be fair, the methane explosions don't even need to form a whirlpool to suck ships under. And if in those circumstances you also get a whirlpool, then it's at least not aiding in recovering from the situation to say the least.

The water basically dissappear under the boat and it's replaced by a water-gas mixture.
