i like his ideas about what is traditional.
looking at the past for guidance and structure is very good, but don't make rules out of it, that's painting a corner.
you gotta understand where your roots are, but you gotta keep moving up.

actually, there are quite a lot of african bass drum traditions that go right back to africa.
one tradition calls bass drums dunoons, or dun dun (doon doon) for obvious reasons (their sound), and generally three of them are piled on top of each other with two (on their sides) and the bottom and one on top, and all are differing sizes giving three main notes, although they can be tensioned in a way wich gives each end of each drum a differing tone, thereby giving six sperate bass tones to use, like a strange bass keyboard.
also, whether the leather lashes are which hold the skins on, you can jam in a cowbell, which takes skill to play as you'll be playing one line on the cowbell, and another line on the drums.
many west african djembe outfits tend to use this type of bass drum set up, and it's worth checking out.
a really good international performer who has evolved this style into a cool dance show for theatres and raves is Ganja Giri a white aussie didgeridoo player whose drummers use the above setup up in their percussion section.
