- While our programmers are busy with major rewrites that will take a long time, me and Victoria are doing a visual pass on the old levels to get them up to par with the later ones. There will likely be some functional changes here and there, but the general geometry, layouts and encounters will remain the same in almost all cases since they work fine as is.

When I was a kid, my parents would take me to this australian themed restaurant, every table inside always had a fake candle in the middle that used light strips of red and orange paper and a small fan and light hidden under it to simulate the appearance of fire. I think about it all the time, I don’t know why
I've seen similar stuff, like fake candles with light bulbs at the top, or oil lamps with light bulbs inside.

i have been trapped in a dark, moist basement for the past 6 months forced to Speedrun ULTRAKILL level 5-3. Now, I revisit limbo to get a breath of fresh air knowing I'll never ever see the outside walls of this concrete prison, unless?
It's a pity that there is no spruce or birch in ultrakill. I really like the feel of the spruce wood and the birch leaves are neat.

wow, the background effect at the start really sells it for me. it looks like there's so much more space than there is, and when you try to explore it you hit the screen.

Not exactly. The fake screen has always been there, but not the background elements.
@@viviolet7 no, the cutoff was more noticeable since the ground level in the screen was much lower than in the level itself so it looked like each room was hanging in the skybox disconnected from each other

I love how well the skybox and the actual ground/grass blend in with each other. It looks like it goes on for miles until you get close to the walls

@@CashFlowz16 The description notes that they are busy rewriting the code-base currently but they may start working on Non-Euclidean geometry later (as a guess)
Non-Euclidian geometry in games works with clever teleports and the algorithms to make it look realistic are already known and have been a thing since at least the first Portal game. I assume that even with such a task, one that is admittedly still way more complex than your average level logic, the bulk of the work is still with having good level design
Damn, this is just incredible. Words cannot describe how many great things are happening with this game. I mean, I’ve been playing for a relatively short time, maybe two years, but even so, every time I’m happy like a child when I see new updates and any new things related to the game in general. Second Act, P-2, Seventh Layer, a huge Full Arsenal Update and now also an overhaul, it’s simply unthinkable. I literally have no words, especially in English, which is not my native language and yet, Hakita, thank you for being you and for Ultrakill. I don’t remember the last time I was so happy about every news about an indie game, and the path of development of the game that was done, I don’t even know, is amazing, simply incredible.

i felt like limbo really needed this, honestly makes it feel way more how limbo was intended to be now.
The tree leaves and bushes being holograms makes it actually seems like something made to mock the sinners as opposed to the older look where it just looks like regular low polly trees👍

Looks amazing and is a much more convincing hell as well. An infinite expanse of nothing that you can't even enjoy wandering around even though you know if you could there wouldn't be anything stimulating to find, just more trees
In the Inferno, Limbo was basically a fake heaven for pagans that didn't otherwise sin in life. It now nails the "fake heaven" look much better indeed.

Last I checked, it was just Limbo getting updated, but I imagine that at some point Prelude, Lust, and Gluttony have some potential for aesthetic revamps as well, especially Prelude as Hakita has mentioned his texture work in those levels was… not the greatest lmao
he said the idea is act 1 entirely revamped, counting lust and gluttony too
He only said he will rework limbo in a video, not the entire act 1, also if you didn't know, prelude it's already reworked

i really like how there's a slight warm, golden glow to the scene now. both makes the palette more cohesive on a visual level, as well as underscoring the whole cheesy, mocking romanticism of the place
also, assuming that the new walls use the same technique portal 2 does for its screens, for example, and projects in a scene from elsewhere, maybe we'll be able to noclip into the actual area and run around it for real?
@@cocoonprince In the legacy Discord server, Hakita's actually confirmed that the walls do use the same technique as Source games, meaning that we can pop over to it and mess around! I'd share an image that Victoria posted of a Filth being visible on the wall, but CZcams doesn't allow images, you know how it is.

This is awesome! After the insanity that way the Violence Layer, I did feel as though the earlier layers were a bit lacking in terms of spectacle in comparison. However as much as an overhaul would be cool, I do think the idea of the deeper layers having so much more to offer makes sense as it's very much the climax of the game and story. Yap sesh over, awesome job Hakita!
Well we know most of the encounters and layouts aren't changing much, if at all. So most of the overhaul is just presentation.

the way the redesign makes limbo feel fake is crazy. i absolutely love the visual effects on the screen to really give it that "simulated reality" look. absolutely incredible

the hologram effect on the walls is def a huge upgrade, the illusion is more convincing and it feels less like the rooms are just "floating in the air" now (not quite sure how to describe it). Part of me will miss the old crusty trees though; in a way I feel like they kinda fit the fake aesthetic of Limbo (plus no more platforming on them), but the holographic look is still a nice touch.

This got me at first i thought limbo was actually alot larger than before...ive been gotten...
really loving the wispy refractive walls and how the ground continues out into the background, but I really really hope they bring back those distant mountains, especially since that waterfall doesn't have any place in an empty field
A distant, deep green would help accentuate the rest of the map elements too, and keep it from looking like it drops off into a white void once you go high enough
