    A few things wrong.
    1) Battery life is 3-4 hours in demanding games, not the 2-3 hours Lon TV claims.
    2) Installing XTU & enabling high performance in the power options will give you far better performance and more consistent frame rate than the Nintendo Switch. Case in point: DOOM (Switch version runs at 432p sub 30fps with frame pacing) (GPD Win 2 version runs at 500p 30+ FPS)
    3) The GPD Win 2 is NOT more expensive than the Nintendo Switch when you factor in the games/software. Like Stephanie has said, games on Steam, Humble Bundle & Fanatical have higher discounts than the Nintendo e-shop. Sometimes Steam and other stores offer games for FREE. Backwards compatibility also saves PC gamers a tremendous amount of money, not having to repurchase games multiple times just to play on different and newer hardware is pro consumer & helps game preservation. Consoles like the PS4 and the Nintendo Switch don't have this feature and probably won't for their future consoles.

      + Switch ports look way worse then Pc low - mid settings ... & what most important is that Switch game library have only 3-5 real AAA games - when on GPD you can play basically any game from last 30 years ....

    • @PSNGormond
      @PSNGormond Před 6 lety +3

      The thing about the Switch is that physical games hold their value very well, I could probably sell many of them for about what I paid for them. Also games on the Switch are heavily optimised to work on a small form factor unlike devices like this.

    I bought one on indiegogo and I love the thing. I can play kingdom hearts 2 final mix plus on a hand held. I do school work on this so I don't have to pull out my laptop. Like the switch and the Wii u I don't have to give up my tv. You can optimize the game yourself. I waited years for something like this. Great review.

    Pricing aside, I actually liked the inward joystick placement in the previous model. It was quite comfortable for my hands. I'd honestly get this over the Switch any day considering I can play games outside of Nintendo's library and use it as a regular computer.

  • @hmr0
    @hmr0 Před 6 lety +52

    I don't know what's with big channels like this and LTT, supposedly technology professionals not know a little something called optimization. It's actually kinda infuriating as most of the people's first impression on this is gonna be it cant even run Pac-Man.
    I bet they just downloaded the first link they saw on Dolphin website and ran it with default settings. I can run Mario Galaxy 1+2 perfectly 60fps locked at 720p. In fact pretty much 100% of the Wii game can run at full speed at 1x resolution and 90% can run at 720p upscaled.
    Mario Galaxy
    czcams.com/video/Mw-Ojo5jRTM/video.html
    With a little modding i can get GTA 5 locked at 30fps (45unlocked)
    It can even run certain Wii U games.
    Just so you know Shantae can already run at 60fps locked on the first Win if you do something magical: go in the in-game setting and change the graphic settings.
    And I know this thing is not cheap, but comparing to the same spec m3 surface pro without the keyboard or anything, its still more expensive than this.

      This is a silly argument because every pc can be optimized in the manner you described. Its not something specific only to the GPD win 2 that should be included in its review as a selling point.
      The reason he leaves it out isnt because he doesnt know that it can be optimized, it is for the same reason he leaves it out from all his other laptop/mini-pc reviews, because its not a default user experience relevant to all consumers. I like the GPD Win too but there is no reason his review has to cater specifically for your relevant fanboy satisfaction.

  • @ZombieGadget
    @ZombieGadget Před 6 lety +16

    You can run Street Fighter V at 60 fps, but you need to lower the resolution to about 544p. And keep the internal resolution at 50. This is a device where you need to know how to tweak things to make them run. If you cant do that, then this device isn't for you. This is no different than any other low spec pc. If you are uneducated on how to make these tweaks and dont want to take the time to learn how to figure them out, invest in an actual gaming laptop or rig where you dont have to make as many. But again, you'll still have to take the time to install the drivers and make a few basic optimizations to get things to run better. That just comes with the territory of PC gaming.
    As for linux, if you know how to tweak things, you can fix the orientation and get the touch screen working. And if someone is going out of the way to install Linux, chances are they are a more advanced PC user anyways and can figure out how to do this.

    • @christianr.5868
      @christianr.5868 Před 5 lety +1

      Zombie Gadget what does it mean when you have the internal resolution at 50? Does that mean it’s 50% of 544p?

    • @ZombieGadget
      @ZombieGadget Před 5 lety +1

      @@christianr.5868 The game resolution is at about 544p but the application window itself is still stretched to be 720p. You're just lowering the resolution of the game without changing the resolution of that the OS is displaying at.

    I have a lot of steam games. A lot of them are indie titles and a lot of them haven't even been played yet. I thought about getting a switch but I'd rather have something portable that I can play the titles I already own on. This looked like a solid option from the thumbnail but then I heard the price.

    Nice review. I would argue that it would be MORE expensive going the Switch route since the games get discounted at a higher percentage on Steam. So while the Switch is the cheaper machine if you add up long term the higher prices you will pay for games it's going to cost you more. Also a lot of us have a few hundred games in our Steam libraries already, so other than the investment in hardware there isn't much else you need to purchase to get started.

    • @DoomRater
      @DoomRater Před 6 lety

      That's still a tough sell for me. For all the console exclusives I'd care about (most are titles I already played on Wii U), I can get those and a Switch for under the price of what they're asking. And that's what separates the two devices- their exclusives. It's going to be a while before Switch emulators catch up and I'm still not sure a GPD Win 2 will be able to run that at a decent speed once the emulators are there. I still want a GPD Win 2, but I'm not made of money to invest in one.

    • @AvatarEquis

    Hey Lon, I've been a sub of yours for maybe a year now, I really enjoy your honest, to the point, in depth and educated reviews. Especially the fact you're not a shill like many other tech channels are.
    Anyway I know it's late to comment, but were you aware GPD quietly announced a slight upgrade to the Win 2 with a slightly better processor, cooling, and speakers? It's the same price and all come with a 256 GB storage. I believe the older win 2's are being phased out. It would be cool if you could get your hands on one. I'm seriously looking at picking one up any day now.
    My question to you though is, did you tweak or overclock the Win 2 to get Gamecube running at full speed? It looks amazing you can get that running full speed on that little device.

    Also I dont think you have your settings set right for the emulation. So far I have gotten every emulator including ps2 and dolphin running at full speed. This includes Mario Galaxy and burn out. I look for youtube videos for the game I want to run on my GPD Win 2 and lot of times the people will post in the comments their emulator settings that got the game to run at full speed.
    Also in the bios I set my Win 2 to allow the graphics to consume full power when on the battery and I set my TDP to 7W.

    A good review, BUT I'll just say that anyone looking to buy one really should do much more research on games as other users have been able to run various better than what Lon was getting. Some require heavy tweaking, some require very little if any tweaking at all.
    Also his claim that gaming on a Swiitch would give you a more consistent experience, that really varies from game to game.
    For example, Shining Resonance Refrain on Swiitch runs at 30 FPS with dips below while also not looking all that great. On the Win 2, it runs near flawlessly at max settings. It does sometimes dip below 60 FPS, but always stays above 30. No tweaks nor optimizations whatsoever and even with slight dips it doesn't affect gameplay whatsoever.

    So reading through the comments it sound like the biggest problem people have with the WIN2 is its price. And while the WIN2 is highpriced, it is not overpriced. Yes $700 does seem a bit much for handheld system. But we cannot forget that this system is a handheld GAMING PC. Gaming PCs already have an average pricing of $700-$1000 along with high end computers going for $2000-$4000. So in truth it on the cheaper end in terms of PCs. "But the Switch is cheaper overall". I own a Switch, just bought it ,and enjoy it. I have no bias against this system. So with that said, the Switch is only cheaper in initial purchase of the system by itself. The Switch has a library of big title physical games that range from $50-$60. Steams are notoriously cheaper on average. For example I have 49 games in my steam library. 44 are games I bought this year so far, 23 of which are installed on my WIN1. Meanwhile on my Switch I only have LoZ:Breath of the Wild and don't anticipate my Switch library growing outside of buying a game per 1-2 months. Just something to think about when calling these systems "overpriced".

    • @_Digitalguy
      @_Digitalguy Před 6 lety

      That's what I believed when buying the GPD pocket, which is more suitable as the keyboard is better. The reality is that the keyboard is still too cramped to be really better than a phone (I make a lot of mistakes and my hand get tireed after a bit) and the screen is so small that it gives me a headache after a while. For travelling the Surface go makes more sense at a similar price (actually cheaper for the 8GB ram and 128 SSD variant). Windows is still usable at 10" rather that at 6 or 7 and the keyboard is too (slightly cramped but miles aways from these pocketable devices)

      Go check GPD Pocket 2, it is due in October. Currently you can preorder it on their indiegogo page at $609 for 8GB RAM model, and $529 for 4GB version. Has a bigger keyboard, full metal body and is way thinner than GPD Win 2.

  • @ApolloVIIIYouAreGoForTLI

    They 100% need to ditch the physical keyboard and put a virtual one in.. well all use one on our phones and then they have a billion more options... DS/3DS emulator for example.

If you will check gameplay from youtube you can literary any game today ...Like Gta 5 - Doom - wolfenstein 2 - All Cod - Bf - Crysis so as games from last 30 years - & yes you can play Witcher 3 - just type Witcher 3 gpd win 2 ... & Sure you can play loot of games from GameCube PS2 Ps1 - PSP
    + Specs here are nearly the same as Macbook 13 pro from -2015 1300 us or like Dell Xps so yes price is fair ... + youtube - gpd win 2 102 games

    • @AvatarEquis
      @AvatarEquis Před 6 lety +6

      The thing is Lon tried all things in default configurations. He didn't tune the OS, the games, the emulator or the hardware. Otherwise he would have found out that all PS2 and Wii games can run on it. Same for 3DS and even most of the games on WiiU. Having that in context. Lon did OK.

    • @lonalma2196
      @lonalma2196 Před 6 lety +1

      Here's the thing ... you don't need to tune Os or bios to play games like Crysis Doom or Cod - Bf - FarCry 3 - 4 & so on ... all of these games are more the playble in +- mid to hight or Low setting with 30-60 fps ... ( most of new games on consoles running in 30 fps so as switch does if we will take doom or wolfenstein 2 witch look way worse then Gpd version - standart PC... So instead of showing some real games... we see Indie games witch can be played on microwave ... & nothig was mention about tunig Gpd in terms of OS or Bios ... witch is really important cause if you will do it can run Witcher 3 in 25-30 fps with little tweek but it runs & looks great & especially for this screen ... So yes Imho this review is Bad because nothing real was mentioned ... Why do I need to spent 700 us for playing Idie games or emulator according to this video?

    • @AvatarEquis
      @AvatarEquis Před 6 lety +4

      I get your frustration. I really do. I am on the GPD WIN train. But LON's channel profile is not geared for gaming. I would agree it was a bad review if that was the case. I am also not saying it was a good review. Just an OK one for him. Best review on GPD hardware continues to be the one from ThePhawx among others with a more solid PC gaming background.

    • @lonalma2196
      @lonalma2196 Před 6 lety

      Avatar x - also to Lon TV - Look ...I did huge research on Gpd I know ThePhawx & that why I'm getting frustrated ... Cause there not enough good reviews today about gpd all we have is some low quality opinions but with good publicity who literally stops progress in tech industry only because they are some times to lazy to make research ... It's quite important topic & Im not speaking only about gpd .... Lon TV - you have responsibility to bring right Information & aspecialy if you consider your self as a tech blogger its not only about your experience ...
