    I remember watching the show in 68 and just loved the car. I used to tell my dad that I wanted one(I was 11yrs old). Fast forward to 1970. My parents came home one evening with a "new car". It was a 68 GTO. Vernado? green with blk interier. I was given the keys in my senior yr in hs.(75). Never realized how much my dad thought of me till many yrs after his passing. We grew close before his passing and I admire and love both my parents more and more after their passing.
    Wish they only knew.
    After hs I let my younger brother use the car when he started college. He under estimated its power and turned left in front of a truck one morning, wheels just spun so car didn't get out of way. Luckily he was not hurt but car suffered damage at front fender and door pillar and a arm. Cars were still aplenty then so I was able to replace everything from pick a part but frame still a little tweeked.
    I still have the car parked in back under shed. Hope to get back on road someday but due to ongoing setbacks(life) that day seems to remain in limbo.

    I am Happy to say Mel is a friend of mine, I have ridden in and driven this iconic car , Mel's enthusiasm is just as this video shows , he is excited to talk to anyone that has questions about his prized possession. He is as real as the car is , you won't find a nicer car guy to talk to. He has this car on the street all summer long in the Detroit area. Especially at the WOODWARD DREAM CRUISE. name doesn'tcome across on here correctly , but I am better known as T-Bucket

    Absolutely iconic car from my childhood. I even had the matchbox car with the four monkees figures holding guitars sitting inside. Oh, how I wish I still had that car. The only car that surpasses this is the original Batmobile, but the Monkeymobile comes as close as any other car in the world could possibly come.

    • @tompastian3447
      @tompastian3447 Před rokem +1

      Yes, the Batmobile is the coolest car. There is a reproduction Batmobile in Ohio that came out this year (2023), which is the ultimate TV version of the Batmobile, a "must see video" on youtube. The owner must have spent many thousands of dollars to perfect so many aspects of the original TV series Batmobile, making many of the
      devices functional. Retractable parachutes and the hidden machine guns behind the bat emblem on the car doors are just some of the refinements.

    I was just a kid in the '60s but remember this show well in its original run on NBC because of my big sister who was in high school at that time. She loved the Monkees, bought all of their albums, etc, and never missed the show. I thought they were kind of funny, but being a car guy even back then I mostly watched it hoping to catch a rare glimpse of the Monkeemobile. In general, being #6 of 7 kids, I would have been too young and missed out on most '60s pop culture as it happened if it hadn't been for my older brothers and sisters. I experienced and remember most of it because I got to see and hear it through their eyes and ears. The Monkees to this day remind me of my sister as a teen. We lost to cancer back in 2002 when she was in only her 40's.

Drove it back and forth to school for three years. Manual roll up windows, AM radio and a heater. It was a 68. I looked at pictures on line. Had the sad back lights and horizontal head lights. and I remember the number 400 motor. PS Hay Mike Nesmith, WE LOVE YOU!

    I read that when Jeffries delivered the car to Screen Gems the blower actually worked and Mike Nesmith got in and blew past the producers , tires smoking and at a high rate of speed. They said call Jeffries back and tell him to get that damned thing off there.

    • @martinharris5017
      @martinharris5017 Před 5 lety +1

      True story! They also had NO rear suspension to make the car burn out easier. They took the thing back to Jeffries for a fake blower to make the car more manageable. When Barris acquired the car he (typically) insinuated that he was the car's creator!

Under the fake blower it should still have the original 3 Holley 2bbls. I had the model too, but I still think there is something different about this car. It looks too far out from the original. I don’t remember exhaust coming out of the wheel well. The nose looks way too long. I remember the Monkeemobile as being more of a custom GTO made into an extended convertible, not so much looking like a cartoon car. I have to watch the beginning of the show again.

    To Mike Nesmith - Thank you so much for letting all the Monkees fans all over the world know that you hate that you were ever in that show. Thank you for repeating it every chance you get and never letting us forget how it ruined a professional music career for you and held you back from many other opportunities. You were so much bigger and better than the Monkees and deserved so much more .You certainly are a class act. :-|

      Thanks to the Monkee's show Nesmith came up with the concept of music videos which made him quite wealthy and spurred several generations of music video followers which in turn made some unknown groups very popular and had success afterwards so he should be glad he was a part of this show that affected tons of music fans from the late 70's through the early 2000's and beyond!!

      I was 10 when they were on TV. It was claimed they were created to rival the Beatles by Hollywood and NBC. But in the end --when they wanted to actually do and perform their own music the Producer fired them on the spot. That same person was responsible for handing them their next #1 hit (as he'd done all along) but after the firing it was given to The Archie's (I believe) and that's how they got their start. The song (if I remember correctly) was "Sugar Sugar".
