- yes u can get into calarts even if u have No Fuckin Clue how to draw A Building (like me) (i still don't know how) (and at this point i'm too afraid to ask) (i cant believe i got in wtf!!!!!!!!!!!)
started in august and finished 1/4th of it, had a mental breakdown, and then finished the rest within like 3 weeks in december kdfkjfkdsjfdshjkfdshf

🔴my prev comment got deleted because i switched accounts BUT for the 2 people who might be reading this during app szn here's some tips from me to you!
- the sketchbook is the LAST thing they see in your app. if your fig/creative section doesnt "pass" in their eyes they wont even look at your sketchbook :-( it sucks- i know!!!!! and its unfair especially with the love and care ppl put into their sketchbooks. but its probably due to the high volume of applicants they get a year (1-1.5k) and the relatively small admissions team (10? less than 10?)
- so focus on your FIGURE DRAWINGS first and foremost. its truly genuinely 13044933% the most important part of your whole application!!!!!! i cannot stress this enough!! your figs... your precious figs............. so important..
- start your sketchbook earlier/on time (id suggest july/august), dont do it in 3 weeks like me omfg that was truly so ungodly
- have FUN. i know people who got in with lined sketchbooks, sketchbooks with only 20 pages.. sketchbooks filled with ramblings.. theres no "mould" you need to fit in, despite what the videos might indicate (also remember a good 60-70% of people never upload their sketchbooks publically!). they just want to see your process and how you observe in your sketchbooks, mainly. :-) read up on the admission guidelines and do your best to follow it.
- my teacher who is on the portfolio review board mentioned in class that they could "tell" when an applicant has been looking at calarts sketchbook vids and that they were trying to emulate it and he discourages it (even tho like 99% of people do TRY to emulate what they see, myself included haha), he emphasised wanting to see the individual applicant's creative voice/artistic style!
- so, go crazy! have FUN (or try your best to)!! i know the app is extremely stressful and the sketchbook might seem super daunting. just do your best, put your best foot forward and stick to a schedule and you'll be more than fine :-)

@@sonoio869 You have to show that you have understanding of human/animal anatomy and the fundamentals. It's an animation course, they're not going to teach you what you should already know

That is the neatest and nicest looking sketchbook I’ve ever seen. You can draw everything. I wish I could draw that well and that many things
It takes time and practice! Don't focus on what you can't do yet or what you lack in comparison to others, rather, look at other's art and take notes on what you like! The unique shapes, colors, clothing, flow, etc. I had a whole night where I watched animations and looked at art and if there was something I liked like the way the character's back arched or the way the teeth looked, I paused the animation or looked at the art and drew it on and inspiration page full of other things I liked. By the end of the night I had a whole page full of expressions, bodies, shapes, and more that I have looked back at quite a few times to get inspiration and what not.
Art is a long journey but it is rewarding and you are unique and will blossom to be amazing! If you can't draw all they can or as eloquently as they can that just means that your art and skill are undefinable and can go any direction you want! Right now, you have limitless possibilities. Now it is up to you to pick your first one. :)

You may not know how to draw a building but you know how to make some damn good gesture and character designs. These look sick!
And I can relate btw. I draw more characters than I do backgrounds lol
LIterallY LOVE this sketchbook and honestly to your "finished 1/4th of it, had a mental breakdown, and then finished the rest within like 3 weeks" LiterALLY SAME. I just posted a sketchbook tour and basically the same thing happened except that went on for like 2 years and I blamed it on the fact that I went travelling. ANywho I love how much you fit on all your pages and I expecially love the style and colouring in the bottom left corner at 1:53 that would make such a cool animation

seeing your style with different mediums it makes me want to see an anime with pencil, pen, highlighter, pen and watercolor.

Wow your artwork is so charming! I really appreciate the advice you gave to people applying. I go to a small art school and I always felt like there is so much pressure online to make work a certain way and follow a certain path. Looking at these sketchbooks after getting into college is so much fun because I can just appreciate lovely art instead of trying to fit into a mold. To those of you applying to any art school, it is so much more important to be yourself and have fun. There is no one path to take. It's really refreshing to see people encouraging others to make work for their own sake. Your work is incredible keep going!!!
