Should I upgrade from my Sigma 50-500mm f5.6-6.3 OS lens to a Canon EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM

  • I have been using a Sigma 50-500mm for years, both for work [Professional Motorsport] and play. Only sometimes I wonder if the Canon 100-400mm L version 2 would be an improvement. I upgraded to an R6 primarily for the animal eye tracking, now I am searching for higher Image Quality. This is my personal opinion on how things panned out!

I have Sigma 50-500mm right now.
It's an absolute beast of a lens for sure.
Best part is a huge range which can be used for many purposes.
Worst part is the huge range and that's usually used for longest zoom at 500mm in most cases and due to weight of the lens, the usability in other scenarios is limited.
If you're getting a good price for 100-400, I'd recommend you to get a teleconvertor and make the most out of it.
Regarding teleconvertor, you can get one for Sigma too. Just need to find the correct one.

After looking at the alternatives I bought a s/h 120-300 f2.8 Sigma, that gave me the opportunity for 600 F5.6, totally amazing, noticeably sharper than the 100-400, well. On the 5D4 the results are brilliant, on a par with my Canon 400mm f2.8, then I bought an R5. The AiAF sucks with Sigma lenses, 4 of 5 images are soft. I had all the info from my research, £2,800 for a 100-500 etc, so I picked up a 100-400 L ii for £1200, maybe I should have in the first place. I still can do 600mm f5.6, but only on the 5D4 if I want consistency. That is a downside of being a lowly pensioner, very little money. Oh, and getting old means it isn't fun lugging around a 10lb 400 f2.8 either.

I do professional motorsport photography, so I need the range. I bought a Sigma 120-300 f2.8 rather than the Canon lens, brilliant. Only the Canon R5 didn't like it so I ended up with a 100-400L anyway. I use MPB for second hand, and even LCE. Have fun.
