I agree "You Must Love Me" and "Maybe This Time" are two of the best Oscar Bait songs written for musical adaptations--the former in particular fits almost seamlessly with the original score, which is something very few movie additions manage.
I will maintain, however, that "Evermore" works on its own terms, because it's not really a substitute for "If I Can't Love Her" as it is an expression of a different stage of the Beast's character arc (okay, it is kind of a substitute for the Act 2 dark reprise, but still). I wouldn't be surprised if it's included in the proposed stage revival of BatB in place of the reprise, and honestly I wouldn't complain if it was.
You Must Love Me is such a shockingly effective and emotional song, and is probably the best thing to come from the Evita movie.
I mean, it's not the worst song ever written, but I just felt it came at the cost of a much better Beast solo number. But I have enjoyed covers of the song.
I'd like to see the brief reprise that THEN goes into the full "Evermore."
I would lol. Add Evermore. But leave the act 1 closer alone. It's perfect
My favorite song written for a movie adaptation is New Girl In Town from Hairspray. I grew up with the movie first then the stage show and always assumed New Girl In Town was part of the story in every aspect. I would not like to see that song in a stage version of Hairspray but that song is an incredibly fun one.
"Mean Green Mother From Outer Space" from Little Shop of Horrors is my pick. Great list and some details I wasn't aware of.
Thank you so much for watching! :)
MrHootiedean agreed
If “No One Would Listen” had been in the original musical, I think I would have actually vomited
I also want to say that Hopelessly Devoted to You, Sandy, and You’re the One I Want were all songs written for the movie version of Grease
I honestly did not know that, though admittedly, I'm not the biggest fan of Grease. Thank you so much for watching! :)
Also, You're the one that I want was written for the movie as well
"Maybe This Time" is one of my favorite songs of all time. It was not written specifically for the film version of "Cabaret", however--Kander and Ebb wrote it originally for Kaye Ballard. Liza Minnelli had also sung it several times before it was added to "Cabaret".
Like "Maybe This Time" from 'Cabaret', "I Have Confidence" is now in the stage version of 'The Sound of Music'. "No One Would Listen" is an OK tune but just does not work and I'm glad it's only in the deleted section of POTO.
"Moving on to something more optimistic" *Starts talking about Cabret.* Yes, what a very optimistic musical...
I agree. “You Must Love Me,” is a great addition to the movie, Evita. And if, “I Move On,” from Chicago made its way into the story, I’d agree. Too bad it’s stuck as an ending credits song. As for Beauty and the Beast, I prefer, “Days in the Sun,” over, “Evermore.”
I prefer Days in the Sun too! I'm saving a bunch for a sequel video to this-- so keep excitement high for that!
I can't believe you haven't mentioned Listen in Dreamgirls! It's one of 3 that were written specifically for the movie, and it does provide a good resolution for Deena, makes her more rounded as a character... Though I don't think it works as well on stage. If Deena is not played by Beyoncé, Effie is the only one that pulls focus.
One of the best things about "You Must Love Me" is the triple meaning of the title. It could mean "I thought you were only using me but you must actually love me," it could mean "You HAVE to love me! I command it!" or it could mean "Please, please love me...I have nothing else now." And knowing Eva Peron, it could very well be a mixture of all three.
Beautiful City from the Godspell movie.
I really love "I have confidence", it's actually one of my favourite songs of the soundtrack. I think it's needed for the new medium and gives us an energised number right at the exciting incident.
"Something good" on the other hand I find very interesting and a good example to show the interesting differences between the film and the stage musical.
The movie cut some songs from the show for no real reason other than to kind of force a new tone. The sound of music as a stage show is a very Rodgers and Hammerstein esque, witty, kind of comedic drama, with a very emotional plot. The film however takes the story in a much more sentimental direction, cutting more witty clever songs like "How can love survive" and replacing them with Ernest ballads like "Something good".
Btw, does anyone else hear that the chord progression for "maybe this time" is the exact same as the one from the verses of Chicago's "Funny Honey" and "Nowadays"?
I’m loving Speechless from the Aladdin live action.
I wonder how Wicked's score will change? I heard they were adding songs due to structural issues involved with adaptation.
There's a few others you never talked about:
.Come So Far (Got So Far to Go) and/or Ladies Choice from Hairspray (2007)
.Then We Are Decided from Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)
.Speechless from Aladdin (2019)
.Wear Your Crown from The Prom (2020)
You've gotta admit Dan Stevens does a lovely job on Evermore. Although I suppose he could have done the same with If I Can't Love Her given the opportunity.
When I first went to see the new Beauty and the Beast movie I actually started to get teary eyed when "Evermore" started playing. Compared to the others songs in that movie, it actually made me feel something. Dan Stevens did a pretty good job, but I can see how it may not be the best fit in the movie.
Oh come on! I LOVED Evermore!
I know the song has its fans, but I just can't help but feel it's replacing something that I liked much better. Thank you so much for watching! :)
I love "Evermore".
i never knew that "I have confidence" is not on stage
#Justice for "If I can't love her".

Fun video, Jess!
Thank you! Legit waiting for you to get to evermore. Like the broadway show was much better. So much.
Death to Evermore! Thank you so much for watching! :)
8:15 I LOVE EVERMORE! I don’t know “If I Can’t Lover Her”; maybe that’s why I disagree there. Otherwise, we agree!
You Must Love Me was in the production of Evita I saw in Melbourne this year and it actually worked super well and it made me cry like a bitch
It works so well! It feels so ingrained into the content that I honestly would feel like I was missing out if the song WASN'T in a stage version of the show.
*I humbly disagree regarding "Something Good". It's fine song, but that's about all I can say about it. More to the point, I don't understand what was gained by replacing "An Ordinary Couple" with this one. Neither is among the strongest songs from the score, but I don't think "Something Good" is really any better than its predecessor. Maybe my perception of it is tainted by the fact that, every time we got to this scene, my pastor-dad would say, "Well, I disagree with this theology!"
*I actually had never heard of "Rainbows"! I've gone ahead and listened to it while writing this comment. It's pretty, and I like the character development we get. Not sure it "feels" like it belongs with the rest of the score, though, is my only real gripe.
*A little surprised you didn't mention "Then We Are Decided" from JCS '73, given how much I know you like that show. In my opinion, it's a decent song, but does fall into the trap you mentioned early on of not really contributing anything because the story was already plotted out without it. Although, that doesn't stop me from occasionally using Annas' "But don't rely on subtlety!" to describe things.
*I'd also like to give a dishonorable mention to "Sign" from Annie '82. According to legend, Albert Finney and Carol Burnett specifically requested that they have a duet together, so the song was written in a single day. Assuming that's true, boy, does it show! We would always skip through that scene when I was a kid just because none of us enjoyed listening to it.
*Honestly, I'm having a hard time thinking of movie-originals I like that you haven't already listed. Obviously I can think of ones I dislike, but the positive ones are fewer and farther between. Which is unfortunate.
Holy smokes the 80's Annie movie is full of new songs that do not fit the narrative as well. (The personal worst one for me is the removal of "NYC" and replacing it with "Let's Go to the Movies" -- which is a travesty!)
I used to hate both "I Have Confidence" and "Something Good". Now I'm OK with "Something Good" but I still think "I Have Confidence" sucks.
@@MusicalswithCheese AND taking out "Something was Missing."
My favorite is “Listen” from Dreamgirls.
well is noone going to mention the horrible disaster by the name of learn to be lonely ???
Speaking of songs written for the movie of Cabaret that were added to the future revivals, no mention of Two Ladies? Lol
Nope, "Two Ladies" was in the original show. It's "Money" ("makes the world go 'round") that was added to the movie. It replaced "Sitting Pretty" from the stage show, and before 1998, for a while they had a hybrid of the two in there. Now it's just "Money."
What about Then We Are Decided from JCS?
Also, "Could We Start Again, Please?".
@@rickrische557 That song is in the show, just not the concept album
Just write a song for the end credits.
Me is much annoyed with The Beauty and the Beast remake. Would have been much better if they adapted the play. Woof woof bark.
No one would listen is one of the worst things to happen to phantom of the opera since love never dies and Dario argento I hate that song so much
Thank you so much for watching! :)
@@MusicalswithCheese thank *you* for keep doing this stuff
So am I the only person who really really hates Meryl Streep's singing voice..?
I hate her voice worse than Russell Crowe in Les Mis. I love her as an actress and I support her for living her life and doing the acting jobs she wants but yeah...
