They say the quiet ones are always the most interesting...that’s definitely true in Hyakkimaru’s case. Anime is bloated with loud and overly outgoing characters, so when a basically silent character is written well like Hyakkimaru is, it’s a nice breath of fresh air.

How about the fact that they actually aged down Hyakkimaru by what seems rather significantly. In the original adaptation he appears almost like a mature adult who's on a revenge kick. But in the new version he's only about 16 years old and far closer in age and appearance to the lead character dororo. It makes their sibling dynamic much more understandable than just a grown man wandering around with some kid that won't leave him alone. As Hyakkimaru regains his senses and body it's almost a parallel to the paranoia and struggle teenagers face when transitioning from childhood into adulthood, something even dororo will inevitably have to face and the hardships that come with it. It's an interesting concept that the modern adaptation plays up so well.

Funny that you would say that, because according to the some of the people that read the Manga Hyakkimaru was actually around 14 years old while in the 2019 one he is 16. Him and Dororo in either version have a consistent 4-5 year age gap.

I do think Geoff miscommunicated one thing when he was talking about Mio and Hyakkimaru's relationship. Mio did believe at first that by selling her body, her soul was tainted; it wasn't that Hyakkimaru confirming her soul wasn't that made her like him. She already liked and valued Hyakkimaru, but did not feel she was worthy to be with him. She tried to pull herself away at points from Hyakkimaru because she doesn't want him to associate with someone she feels is so defiled. She even tells him not to look at her soul because she thinks it is so filthy. Hyakkimaru touches her face as if to assure her that what she thinks of herself is not true, but she does not get full confirmation of her worth til her conversation with Dororo who calls her an admirable person because she is staying alive and bettering herself.

Dororo aired a season before Demon slayer... The two has nothing on each other, by the time Dororo aired it's 13 episode Demon slayer just aired it's first, and even demon slayer only got its huge attention when EP 19 rolled out. Before that not many were mentioning it, only a couple YT-er but even then they just talked about it for a minute or less..
This is the Equivalent of "Your thinking with your Dick not with your brain"...
Like, Why the fuck do you think it's ain't popular ? Just it's Opening has 23. million views on YT, how the hell is that not popular ?
Ergo proxy now that is unpopular ! But Dororo ? Literally the only step the show could have done is to become Attack on Titan or SAO.. @snakey934Snakeybakey Před 3 lety +21

The thing I loved most about this was the schism between Hyakkimari and Tahomaru, and ist also the reason why I call Dororo the "Ayn Rand anime" because what it comes down to in the end; is Altruism vs Justice.
Tahomaru is not interested in power, nor is he afraid of his position as heir being usurped by Hyakkimaru, when he first learns of his older brother's existence, he feels nothing but sympathy for him, and when he sees his father send soldiers after him, he protest with the simple words "that is my brother!", he is disgusted by his father's past *abuse of Hyakkimaru, but he slowly comes to justify it, both out of a subconscious envy for his brother who occupied their mothers mind and affected their relationship, and a realization that even though Hyakkimaru was wronged, his being the land's patsy has allowed it to prosper when it was in peril before.
Tahomaru's outward justification of his antagonism towards his brother is that Hyakkimaru must continue to suffer for the greater good, Tahomaru's philosophy is that of Altruism... only, he projects these ethics onto his brother.
Hyakkimaru on the other hand has literally; only just learned to speak, and only months before; learned to hear a spoken language, one could say he is lacking the vocabulary to rationalize the twisted albeit understandable ethics of his father and brother. However, he still does know right from wrong, and he knows that he has been wronged. It was not his fault that the land of Daigo was plagued, he was never asked, he simply had his sight, his ears, his nose, his spine, his limbs, sense of pain, skin, and what other organs were too awkward to be shown in the story; stolen from him, and he has a one-track mind, to get them back, even if it means Daigo will suffer for it. Hyakkimaru's philosophy is not one of Altruism, but justice.

    • @stealthbrawler
      @stealthbrawler Před 2 lety +9

And honestly I side with Hyakkimaru despite understanding both. There was so much his family could have done instead of trying to kill him. We see that Hyakkimaru values those he loves even above himself "(he scene of him breaking his arms to try save Dororo.) He wasn't just forsaken his right to a body, to a voice, to his life, but he was forsaken his soul, he was forsaken by his family. He could live with it all if they just loved him, if he was treated like the son he had every right to be. This could have been done up until after the battle at Banmon, his father could have taken him in, his brother, his mother, but they forsook him again. Hyakkimaru fought for every single last part of himself, his soul included, because he was given nothing, and had to earn it and take it back.
He was treated like a monster when he was a lost child, that had nowhere in the world that he belonged, until Dororo came along.
In the end even Hyakkimaru's father realized that the one thing the demons wanted above all else, was Hyakkimaru's spirit, was what he could become, because it was that spirit that he both fought with and for, and what made him unstoppable.
Justice or altruism, neither matter, for they are the extremes that they aimed for, when even Hyakkimaru realized that humans are to struggle between them, his family should have struggled between them, to accept him, to ask for his forgiveness, to allow him the place beside them that they lost, to be human. When Hyakkimaru decided against killing his father and his brother, he no longer strived for Justice, but to be human.
I just finished the anime and TOP TEN MAN I LOVE THIS SHIT I love your interpretation and gave me something to play my interpretation off of.

Unlike say, Young Black Jack, the Dororo anime has been a generally pleasant way to draw from the Tezuka well while being respectful of the spirit behind those works.
I love the original's wonkiness, a trait of Tezuka that he would take a long time to suppress, far into his gekiga period.
This version shaves off the sci-fi and humorous elements to deliver a true Tezuka-style story about the power and meaning of life.
It's also interesting to note that beyond the struggle for Dororo's humanity there's the question about the righteousness of his actions. Young Black Jack felt like an bad compromise to me. The goofiness of the original story with the clean-cut factory blandness of modern production. Atom: The Beginning was good but not great, the battles were fun but there was way too much filler content. Dororo really is the first time I've been 100% on board with a Tezuka anime adaptation. The balance is perfect.

      It's not disney, it's awareness.
Not to mention in western media this level of grotesqueness was never a thing in childrens cartoons in the first place. It's pretty exclusive to Japan. And it hasn't died down that much either.
When I was a kid everyone watched AOT in 5th grade. Our teacher literally gave out stickers to kids with good grades.
When the live action movie came out it was basically only kids at the theater and demon slayer became a show for ''the whole family'' in Japan. So it hasn't changed that much.
Dororo was first published in shonen Sunday. Since that magazine doesn't exist anymore lets compare it to modern shonen jump, since it's for the same age group (shonen 7~15). Are they less grotesque? No. No they're not.
Here are some examples of modern ''shonen'': Demon slayer, jujutsu kaisen, chainsaw man. And the promised freaking neverland with child munching demons and a childs grotesque corpse in the very first episode!

Having read the manga, and watched the original anime, holy crap is the 2019 anime jaw droppingly stunning. I for one am in it wholeheartedly and am looking forward to seeing it through to whatever conclusion the crew gives it. There has yet to be a bad or even sub-par episode of this and I think that it's going to end up being a sleeper hit in the long run. I am glad for the sanding off of anachronisms that the adaptation has done, all the while making it feel that much more serious without going full edge-lord. Honestly, it's reminiscent of old big budget Samurai films of the 60's and 70's, and as we see more of the plot unfold, I'm ever more invested in the setting and characters. A rarity for me as I get ever more jaded towards fiction as a whole.

While the manga is enjoyable in its own right, the anime is what Dororo should be - just as being mentioned in the video, the manga is like Mad parody of the anime which I agree very much. Almost if not all characters feel realistic in the way they behave and their motivation, down to the villains and peasants. Top it off with great opening and ending song, beautiful presentation on visual and voice acting, this anime I believe is going to achive cult status like another great animes of our time.

I've seen episode 1 of the 1969 anime adaptation of Dororo and I personally prefer the new version when it comes to characterization. I like that Hyakkimaru is 100% mute in the 2019 version instead of being able to talk via his mind. Hyakkimaru is a more appealing and sympathetic yet badass character compared to what I saw in episode 1 of the '69 version where he was pretty much just a straight badass with sword arms. Also Dororo himself was made much more likable. He's still very much the same at his core, but I feel he's a much better person in the 2019 version while still being very childish and at times greedy just like his 1969 counterpart.

I understand that the commenter has only seen one episode of the 1969 version but this is pretty accurate from what I've seen of the manga. In the manga Dororo is more greedy and selfish. He (because he prefers to be seen as a he) is less compassionate and understanding like in the anime. Similarly, Hyakkimaru has a stronger more ronin-esque personality. He is a lot more willing to kill (including with humans) gets angry quicker and seems no different from any other human. The anime just seems to do a better job with the characterization while the manga is more simple and straightforward.

I honestly love the 2019 adaption. Although I dislike changes from the original anime and manga, both art style and plotwise, I kinda figured Dororo would receive a modernized update. While I appreciate the old, the new style of the anime was refreshing. The story was improved in some ways, most especially the ending. The time gap for their reunion at the end was shortened (THANK GOD) and the reasons for why he had to leave... 2019's ending seems more realistic. While the 1969 did surprise me that Dororo chose to remain in the village, the manga surprised me even more that... it took Hyakkimaru left her behind (for her sadety) and took 50 years to fully regain his body. That kinda made me wonder how the fuck he's still alive if he was missing that much. So to chose an ending where he parts from Dororo to have a solo journey of personal growth? I love it.

My introduction to the story of Dororo was from an overlooked and now somewhat rare 2004 year Playstation 2 game, "Blood Will Tell". It's the Dororo story, with Hyakkimaru (and sometimes Dororo) as the playable characters, going through the established plotlines, defeating enemies and getting back Hyakkimaru's body parts (all 48 of them).
Since that game, I have seen the original Dororo manga and anime by Osamu Tezuka, seen the live action movie, and watched as much of this most recent anime as has been released.
So far, despite the original animator having created the awesome story itself, the best telling of it has been in this 2019 anime and the "Blood Will Tell" video game. How his recovery of his body parts is story-shown best in the anime, but is illustrated and shown better in the PS2 game.

That's true. Young Black Jack is good. The 2004-2006 was cute and the 90s dubbed version is fantastic. But I feel like 2004-2006 can use an great Mappa touch to it. Banana Fish was fantastic and so is Dororo.

FBI Breaker If you played the game would know what I mean what happened 2 all tha development for that empress demon lady??? Also the dude with the sword, we never got 2 see Dororo consumed by its power we never even got 2 see the user redeem himself at the end by sacrificing himself 2 feed the sword instead of killing he's sister. And u still think it wasn't rushed?
