What kind of grease are you using? Is it just a white silicone grease, or something specifically for 3D printing?

The grease I use is called "Super Lube 92003 Silicone Lubricating Grease with PTFE". Its mostly just a generic grease and isn't specifically for 3D printing.

could I use something like WD 40? or do I need to use something else?

I would not recommend WD-40. It's more of a cleaner to get things unstuck than an actual lubricant.
