    You're absolutely right, the engine does not need any ECU to run properly. The first engine ECU I believe was on the 300Tdi Auto, but the 300Tdi Manual never had one. As you said, it had one for the alarm, the electric windows, probably the central locking, but the engine runs completely fine without them. There are virtually no sensors too, and none that directly affect the running of the engine, only stuff for warning lights on the dash (oil level, diff lock, handbrake etc).

      Custom cars were sometimes “Channeled” to lower the body on the the chassis, Tv show Chop Shop did a golf converted to Subaru 4x4 running gear, a company came in and used lasers to mark Subaru datum points that could be transferred to the VW to ensure the suspension and running gear fitted correctly. EV converters may be a source of info with regards to retaining the registration.❤

      300tdi only needs power to the shutoff solenoid. And starter obviously. You can even dismantle the shutoff so it will run without power but you will have to stall it to stop the engine!

    Absolutely right order chosen! I work at a car shop and we do restoration from time to time. Once we were assembling a Citroen 2CV from scratch, with a new frame and a freshly painted body. What happened was that when the car was originally acquired it was simply disassembled and sent out to paint. During assembly, with a few new parts such as fenders and the hood, it was quickly discovered that they don’t exactly fit together and require adjustment, but since they were already painted it was a nightmare. What should’ve been done was to disassemble everything, get the required parts, assemble the car back and make sure everything fits exactly like it should and only then sent it to be painted.

    Having done similar landrover builds in the past, i would susgest bolting lengths of box section like 75 x 50 x 3 across the the 2 main side chassis mounts, off of these you can fabriate any body mounts you want. You could even extend them forwards and rear ward and tie them to the front mounts and rear mounts to create an adapter cradle between the unmodified landrover chassis abd the shell.
    These box sections would also give secure points to add side steps to and visually help block the gap between the body and chassis.
    Fun project, just a pity it isnt a v8 disco ratger than a diesel lol

      @ianbird4737 Před měsícem +1

      I agree. Keep the body shell as rigid as possible. The radiator might well have to be mounted an inch or so lower anyway. Regarding chassis alterations, even cutting off a redundant mounting is an alteration to the chassis. I suspect you won't be able to avoid an IVA test.

  • @SamPeers1
    @SamPeers1 Před měsícem +2

    I think the rear land rover cross member is in the wrong place and it’d be miles better and easier to chop that out and weld in a tube of box section in a more ideal position than it would to chop the aston body and have to patch it up. That chassis is getting restored anyway, so brace it, chop out that cross member and offer up some box section to sit just right, where it needs to be. I like the idea of the tube in the sill, thats good thinking. Other wise if you did just bolt the mounts through the aluminium you could always sandwich them with plates. But great work, especially on your own!

    Since this engine is a pre-chamber diesel, it pretty much runs by itself. The injector pump draws fuel and distributes it in correct amount, and since it isn´t a turbo, you only need temp gauge and oil pressure gauge to get the info you need. Add an speedometer, a stop button, fuel gauge, some lights and turn/brake signals and you are good to go. Interesting concept so far. May i suggest white/grey/black camo paint, combine wheels (wide wheels) and solid black enormous wheel flares? A roof rack with 6 led lights and two three meter antennas in the back and you got a serious sportscar..

    I’d keep the front wheel arch centrally and work back from there. The gear stick area should be cut back as little as possible. Maybe a fabricated rails that fits between the chassis and the Aston to reduce cutting the body so much? Lowering spring kit/airbags (as well as larger alloys) will reduce the ride height and help reduce the arch gap.

    This is just the coolest project because it’s so whacky and different! I always loved it when Clarkson popped the SL body on the Disco chassis, the Aston os going to look much cooler I feel. You’re going about it the right way and really thinking about it. Also a huge aspect that appeals to me is the simplicity that you are aiming for. That engine needs nothing apart from fuel and air and it will run forever - fantastic. Not an ECU in sight. I was thinking about the lighting - which in the Aston will be a Canbus based system. However, you can run the Land Rover loom and splice the wires onto the Aston lights in theory - if the rear lights are LED they may need a little fettling. But it’s all do-able. Can’t wait for the next instalment.

I am waiting with baited breath for the completion of this brilliant project (although), the journey to get there is pure You Tube Gold!

    If you're worried about bolting into the aluminum Aston, there are a couple things you can do. Fender washers are basically huge oversized washers to spread the load out. You can also weld aluminum plates where you're bolting to toughen up the area and spread the load out better. Or sandwich the body with aluminum plates on both sides.

    Cut the back of the Aston off, mount the cockpit and build a pickup bed behind the cockpit... it would be totally and utterly bonkers... but I think it would look awsome

    if youd like to be this careful, itd be smart to put some sort of oil on the bolts connecting the steel frame and aluminum chassis or the two materials will eventually oxidize in different ways and seize really badly

    • @HudsonAutoFilms
      @HudsonAutoFilms  Před měsícem

      Absolutely, the oxidation has been a concern. So the more prevention the better

    You need at least 8 points to keep the identity......
    Chassis unmodified = 5 points
    Suspension = 2 points
    Axles (both) - original = 2 points
    Transmission - original = 2 points
    Steering assembly - original = 2 points
    Engine - original = 1 point
    The way to get round the chassis mods it to bolt on any mods not weld on
