You are correct!! Switchfoot has made it clear that they write these songs for everyone! However, every member of the band is a professing Christian and is open about where their songs come from... their faith. I respect them so much because they aren't pushing their beliefs and are allowing everyone to interpret the meaning themselves. I can enjoy a song about love even if they wrote it about god's love...they don't say that in the song and so i can say it's a song about how i love my kids, etc. :)

With me not being christian, I interpret this song in a different way. That doesn't mean it has less meaning for me or anyone else. It's just a very beautiful song.
I am not sure if I am a Christian or not. If the definition is Christ-like lifestyle (as so many televangelist memetically repeat in sermons), I certainly am not. Still, I grew up quite religious, and these songs still make me feel some sense of comfort.
being Christian simply means believing that Christ died for your sins and there's nothing you can do to earn a salvation except as to accept the gift of Christ :) and, what follows when He changes your heart through faith, your deeds and lifestyle changes. :)
That's the great thing about truly amazing music. It normally does have an intended meaning, but like any art it speaks to each interpreter differently on a very deep, personal level.

A long time ago, I heard music while lying in bed. Shofar music. Nothing anyone near me would ever play. At around 3 AM. It kept going for an hour as I laid there. And God said, "This is the sound of My love" (paraphrased). He basically told me that His love was the song I was hearing. I wonder if the singer knows what's up. When I heard this, it took me back to that moment!

the truth is that love is nothing without Christ. Christ is the source of true love. A Buddhist or Muslim or Agnostic has no gain by having love without Christ. If you have not Christ you have nothing but a good feeling or a nice sentiment that is temporal.
I'm an agnostic and I love Switchfoot . they have been an integral part of my life for 6-7 years now . I hope you guys understand that different songs hold different meanings to different people . I love that the band makes it clear that their songs are for everyone . There songs are put out there, open to interpretation in whichever way the listener finds comfort in them . I find it confusing that if the band is tolerant why some fans can't be .
