He was the first image we saw when The Force Awakens trailers dropped. A stormtrooper with his helmet off; a black one at that. Sweating profusely and breathing with urgency. We were meant to read that as IMPORTANT...by the second movie he was doing side quests....but the third movie they wouldn't even let him finish what he was trying to say to Rey

It’s a shame. I remember before TFA came out I would watch his interviews and he was so excited. I remember thinking his story was going to be really cool - and then they cast him aside. His original story arc in Colin Trevorrow’s script was WAYYYYY better than what we got. He would have been the LEADER of the entire resistance on Coruscant in an uprising against the empire there, along with Chewy and others, while Po was above fighting the space battle, and Rey was off fighting the clone Palpatine with Ben Solo/Kylo Ren. No way-finder, no mcguffin BS, no “rey you’re a palpatine”, no space horses running on a star destroyer, no ham-fisted “everyone showing up to help the space battle at the last second” BS. Just an old fashioned “good vs evil” face off on land, and space. We, got, robbed.

Real star wars fans hated the ENTIRE direction that the sequels took. If the sequels ever got rebooted, it would be REBOOTED. All new characters and story lines. No fin! No Rey! None of these characters. Nobody wanted them to begin with. We already had story written in countless novels and comics that were accepted as Canon, and that's what REAL star wars fans want.

Finn should have 100% been the main character. A lowly stormtrooper that becomes a Jedi and saves the Galaxy from Darth Vader’s grandson? No doubt it would have been great.

I remember being like 14 being hyped for johns character. Remember sitting in the theater feeling like something was off about the whole thing. Hearing him put this into words affirms that feeling in retrospect
Here's the thing too, I *remember* those trailers, and Finn was the absolute focus of *all* of those trailers. And I was so incredibly hyped to see Finn go through what I predicted to be this amazing journey. And then we had this girl who happened to be the main character somehow. There was no indication she was going to be the main focus. Finn would have been a far more compelling character to tell a story with.
Finn was not the focus of the trailers. You just saw him wake up in the desert. Trailers are supposed to reel you in, Not give away the whole story. They did their job. The movie just sucked.

He went from a runaway who cared about himself, to Rey & Poe and then the entire resistance he learns to care about in 8. In 9 everyone's "arc" is already set, just like it was in the OT. No need for more character development if we're going by Han Solo standards. But it would've been cool to see him train, hopefully in the Rey movie

They had a good opportunity to do it too at the end of the Last Jedi. Rey and Kylo could’ve joined forces at the end after Snoke’s death, leaving Finn as the one needing to become the last Jedi going into the final film. Obviously a lot more setup would be needed to execute it properly, especially with Finn’s side of the story, but it was something they could’ve easily done. Looking back, there was a lot of potential in the sequel trilogy, but it was just poorly executed. It’s sad that the first trailer for the force awakens was probably the best it got

Another reason why Finn should've been the hero: George said Star Wars was partially an anti-corporate commentary. So a lowly stormtrooper rising to save the galaxy would've matched that perfectly.
Fr. It’s clear JJ was setting him up to be a Jedi. Unfortunately Rian came in and derailed the whole thing. Even if they kept the Rey being a Jedi thing, her and Finn kind of meeting through fate and then resparking the Jedi together would’ve been a lot cooler.
This had nothing to do with anything other than disney not having a clear vision for all 3 films. They had one guy make one. Then a different guy make another. They are completely different filmmakers with different styles. They wanted to tell their own stories and in a trilogy you can’t be starting over in each film. What abrams set up with all the characters, including Finn, Johnson tore up and reset. Then abrams came back and was like, no Johnson’s version isn’t it either. Just a masterclass on how not to make a trilogy.
100%. This is just part of the giant mess of what the trilogy was because it had nobody steering the ship with a vision for a trilogy. First writer/director setup some mysteries and characters it seems apparent he didn’t have a solid plan for, second writer/director didn’t care for Star Wars as usual, and made an about-face on teases from the first one, and essentially ended most of the main story lines/plot points from the first film without satisfying or even attempting to give answers to the mysteries set up in the first film, third writer/director is fired and they bring in the first writer/director to retcon the about-faces from the second film and try to piece together enough of a story to limp across the finish line of a trilogy that by that point had no overarching theme, story threads, or antagonists. That a character you had a decent backstory for in the first film didn’t have anything meaningful to do in the other films speaks to the complete lack of planning and time crunch they were under to continue producing a trilogy on a timeline of every other year releases while rectifying incredible blunders along the way.
They wanted to tell their own stories, which is why the decanonized the Legends material but ultimately drew from concepts from Legends and executed them poorly with their own little touch of incompetence

Have you ever read the book? I mean, it's not like she's a big part of the story at this point in time. Her character is an important part of Paul's story and in the book, a big part of their connection is they both lost Fathers.. However, they Fd that all up by gender swapping her dad. Which really is way jacked up. Cuz her dad had a big connection to his father as well. In continuing his work to transform Arakis and living up to that vision.

Here's the thing too, I *remember* those trailers, and Finn was the absolute focus of *all* of those trailers. And I was so incredibly hyped to see Finn go through what I predicted to be this amazing journey. And then we had this girl who happened to be the main character somehow. There was no indication she was going to be the main focus. Finn would have been a far more compelling character to tell a story with.

He went from a runaway who cared about himself, to Rey & Poe and then the entire resistance he learns to care about in 8. In 9 everyone's "arc" is already set, just like it was in the OT. No need for more character development if we're going by Han Solo standards. But it would've been cool to see him train, hopefully in the Rey movie

Finn honestly should’ve turned into a Jedi. And rey turns into the dark side siding with palpatine. And maybe Finn is forced to kill Rey or something. ANYTHING else other than what we got.
They had a good opportunity to do it too at the end of the Last Jedi. Rey and Kylo could’ve joined forces at the end after Snoke’s death, leaving Finn as the one needing to become the last Jedi going into the final film. Obviously a lot more setup would be needed to execute it properly, especially with Finn’s side of the story, but it was something they could’ve easily done.
Looking back, there was a lot of potential in the sequel trilogy, but it was just poorly executed. It’s sad that the first trailer for the force awakens was probably the best it got

Fr. It’s clear JJ was setting him up to be a Jedi. Unfortunately Rian came in and derailed the whole thing. Even if they kept the Rey being a Jedi thing, her and Finn kind of meeting through fate and then resparking the Jedi together would’ve been a lot cooler.
This had nothing to do with anything other than disney not having a clear vision for all 3 films. They had one guy make one. Then a different guy make another. They are completely different filmmakers with different styles. They wanted to tell their own stories and in a trilogy you can’t be starting over in each film. What abrams set up with all the characters, including Finn, Johnson tore up and reset. Then abrams came back and was like, no Johnson’s version isn’t it either. Just a masterclass on how not to make a trilogy.
100%. This is just part of the giant mess of what the trilogy was because it had nobody steering the ship with a vision for a trilogy. First writer/director setup some mysteries and characters it seems apparent he didn’t have a solid plan for, second writer/director didn’t care for Star Wars as usual, and made an about-face on teases from the first one, and essentially ended most of the main story lines/plot points from the first film without satisfying or even attempting to give answers to the mysteries set up in the first film, third writer/director is fired and they bring in the first writer/director to retcon the about-faces from the second film and try to piece together enough of a story to limp across the finish line of a trilogy that by that point had no overarching theme, story threads, or antagonists. That a character you had a decent backstory for in the first film didn’t have anything meaningful to do in the other films speaks to the complete lack of planning and time crunch they were under to continue producing a trilogy on a timeline of every other year releases while rectifying incredible blunders along the way.

It’s so clear that’s what JJ was setting up. Episode 7 isn’t perfect, but I thought it was a very solid start to the trilogy. And I still think it was. Rian Johnson just derailed the whole thing. If they had simply just followed through with what JJ had set up it would’ve been a solid trilogy. And Finn could’ve been a great character.

Forget the race aspect, Finn had the potential to be one of the best character arcs in all of Star Wars. A clone coming to realize that they are on the wrong side and joining the rebels was such a great idea. Instead they pushed him aside to givethe least interesting characters more spotlight

Her character is an important part of Paul's story and in the book, a big part of their connection is they both lost Fathers.. However, they Fd that all up by gender swapping her dad. Which really is way jacked up. Cuz her dad had a big connection to his father as well. In continuing his work to transform Arakis and living up to that vision.
