Love this movie 🎬, it shows you how GREAT of an actor Robert Redford truly is just holding a whole film together like this with about only 5 speaking lines in a whole script. The sounds of the air, ocean, water, waves and wind was fascinating alone ,i think if not my favorite, one of the best movies of 2013👍🙂❣️

I watched this film for the first time on cable, not expecting anything in particular, being a 'mild' admirer of Mr. Redford's career, and I was impressed. He showed a vulnerability I haven't seen in his other performances, namely a flawed human being having put himself under absurd circumstances and trying to survive the best he can and failing miserably throughout most of the crisis. lol. I liked that, and though it takes some patience to go 'through it' with his character, was worth the time watching a tour-de-force performance where he wasn't playing a hero, or anti-hero, or 'hunk' or 'sexy leading man'. The ambiguity was interesting in the way that it left the viewer to wonder who he was before this voyage of disaster, if he was a winner or loser in his former life, etc., etc., I liked that mystery. For better or for worse you were as the viewer, almost invited to be a 'ghost writer' to his fate, a witness to his survival or death in meaninglessness. Anyhow, I think it's worth the watch at least once if you like Redford 'raw'.

I am a sailer and this movie still means alot to me, The mistakes he constantly made really got me going and from my understanding, thats what he wanted us to see. I have been in storms and 40+ knotts of wind for many hours , even at night. your truly chained to your own fate. your teeth become gritty with hours of adrenaline and every gust brings a new challenge. theres no time to do anything except keep her on her feet and not loose your sails or mast. you tend to be alone on deck because the crew has turned green from being sea sik. what i also think about is at that time, you ask yourself, Why did i even buy this death trap, lol but shortly after , your digest all the lessons you learned and took new precautions and now your skills have grown. then you plan your next trip and you push a little bit farther. Sailing has become a true love of my life. i would love to ask Robert Redford a few things about his experensce in making this movie. lol, I had issues with most everything he did to help the situation. the bad part about the movie was it made sailing seem like a catch 22. its not at all, the way you learn is in small trips and study your mistakes. put values of gear and systems , then beef it up and bring 2 of each at least, lol. At least i met my wife before getting into sailing because i heard the sea men and women dont mix, lol.

@@rucksackrules2266 Maybe that was the point. Im glad you replied, It adds a new perspective to this movie. We have all been in situations beyond our skill level. Sailing just happens to be one that will hurt you for what you dont know. To get a participation trophy, You have to survive. Reminds me of a set of Lyrics from Leanards Cohen, Suzanna. " Jesus was a sailor and he walked upon the water, and he spent a long time watching from a lonely wooden tower, and he when he knew for certan, only drowning men could see him. He said all men shall be sailors then until the sea shall free them. and he set beneath your wisdom like a stone. I would really like to meet with Robert Redford and talk sailing and the making of this movie.

Gone Fishing That will hurt you for what you don't know is a great quote from you. I'll keep it in mind. I guess the drama of the movie is so impressive, because of the determination and craftmanship of the character, but also the despair showed. Sailing can be a bitch, haha.

There's something hypnotic about this film: I had it on a loop, for a while (the acting, the music, the story itself -one man versus the elements)...It got me into watching a bunch of documentaries about Donald Crowhurst (very tragic, TRUE story...) What makes somebody take on such a challenge, in the first place, is the key question, I think...

Enjoyed this a lot, found it very touching and was an interesting experience watching this film, you feel as isolated as the character does the whole time. I like that its a no bullshit portrayal of this kind of situation, though obviously it's a film and many parts of it are far fetched, I feel it strips the subject down to the bare minimum, it's tense and beautifully filmed, great acting from Robert Redford who barely says a word yet conveys such emotion with his expressions.

Movies like this, of solo survival, touch us because they express what it's like for each of us in life. We all struggle. When we have other people around to help us our struggle is lessened. When we struggle the most is when we are alone, physically, emotionally or otherwise. When you know no one is coming to help, it forces you to figure it out yourself, when you know it's do or die. And that can be the greatest reward, when you know you can rely on yourself.

I liked that he very carefully credited every worker who worked on the production of this excellent movie. And he prominently acknowledged Maersk steamship company, Copenhagen, who saved his life at the end. The movie conveys very well the despairing conditions of trying to remain on a sailboat 1/2 filled with seawater.
I don't know why he didn't just use a fully reefed mainsail instead of a storm jib.

As an experienced single-handed sailor this film had me constantly screaming bullshit every few minutes. It is totally unrealistic all the way through and sailors who make just one bad decision of the many he made do not survive. I did have a laugh at him reconnecting the PL259 antenna cable at the top, of a very steady mast !, with a spanner (wrench) and cutting away a fallen mast by severing one line, what about the minimum six steel stays? Hollywood should stay away from anything to do with boats.

To employ the Irish cynicism that Redford alludes to, this is a star interview. And if that poster is anything to go by, its about Robert Redford in a boat. Of the seven previous comments, only one is less than star-crossed, if a little harsh. Marty Pelmutter's is pretentious -"Zeitgeist that birthed it"?! It doesn't even make sense!. Are you a teenager with a profile photo of someone else, I wonder?

  • @bryanoh2695

This is a Christian movie. There are many messages from Jesus in this movie.
about 80% of the movie shows our life and how weak humans are. There is nothing he can do on the small boat in the middle of the ocean. He is just trying to find out his location. Will it make the difference if he finds out his location ? He couldn't even stop the ship going next to him.
In the last 10 minutes, How could he stop the ship ? He was able to hold the ship when he gave up everything he had. The small boat is everything he had. That's what exactly Jesus says. If you want to follow me , then give up everything.
After his boat got burned up, he gave up his life and was sinking. What happened then ? He saw the light above. God just show us the path , we are the ones who have to do it. God knows he was sinking but he never jumps in to save him. He must swim up to the surface of water.
at the end of movie , did you see God is giving him a hand when he almost reaches the surface ?
