- Come join us for an exciting first day in Japan where we visit Osaka and share our first impressions of what it is like to be exploring, eating and visiting landmarks in the city. We've been dying to visit Japan for years and even though we were fighting fierce jetlag we still made the most of first day in Osaka by wandering in our local neighborhood, going out for food in Japanese restaurants and convenience stores, taking the metro, shopping for groceries and checking out Osaka Castle. Some of our first impressions of Japan are as follows:
1) Japan so far hasn't been as expensive as we thought it would be. Taking the metro, going out for a budget meals in Japanese restaurants and Japan convenience stores and grocery shopping in Japan have so far been friendly on our wallet.
2) Osaka hasn't been as crowded or hectic as we thought it would be even as one of the biggest cities in Japan.
3) Japanese people ride their bicycles as a main mode of transportation and on sidewalks so it is important as a pedestrian to keep an eye out for that.
4) For a big city Osaka isn't noisy.
Have you been to Japan before? What were you first impressions of Japan? Tell us what you first day in Japan was like in the comments section below.

Our First Day in Japan! Visiting Osaka First Impressions Video Transcript:
Good morning guys from Japan. From Japan. So this is our first full day here. We arrived last night absolutely knackered. Jet lagged. So we ended up sleeping in. Like we had two different sleeps. Like we woke up in the middle of the night we were on our computers and now we needed a second sleep and now it is like almost 10 am. Ten thirty? I think it is 10 in the morning. Yeah. So we're like a little bit confused. A little bit dazed but we figured let's go get some food. This is going to be brunch I guess. Brunch. And the plan today is to just wander around. Yeah. See what Osaka is all about. Basically this is going to be our first impressions of Japan. First impressions of Japan. Our first full day here in Japan. There we go. Super excited. Let's get it started. Food!
Continuing with first impressions we've made it to the park. What is a it called? Osaka Castle Park. Osaka Castle Business Park that is where we got off. That is where it is. Something we've noticed is that it is very quiet here. Not just in the park but the city in general. We noticed there is very little noise pollution. Yeah. Like even when people are out and about no one is being rowdy. Everyone is just soft spoken and there is a sense of tranquility even though we're in a big city. Yeah that is really true. I don't know why I was expecting it to be more busy and crowded. But it has been kind of a nice surprise so far. I mean we are heading to Tokyo soon and I'm sure we'll get our dose of that. Our impressions may change. It will definitely be more crowded there. So far it has been quieter. I've also noticed um like I don't think we are experiencing as much culture shock as someone who has never been to Asia before would in Japan. Yes. Because we have spent considerable time in Korea and Taiwan, Hong Kong. I've been to Shanghai. So there is definitely some similarities.
We're going to call it a day. How about your first impressions in Japan? First impressions. It has been good. It has been an exciting day. It has. I can't believe we still have two months ahead of us here in Japan. I think like considering it was our first day in Japan. I think we saw and did quite a bit. We had some nice food. We walked around our neighborhood. It was just a great start to our trip. And we are excited to do a whole lot more. So stay tuned. There is going to be a tonne of food and travel videos from Japan.
This is part of our Travel in Japan video series showcasing Japanese food, Japanese culture and Japanese cuisine.

Really VERY surprised at how affordable it is. And also how tourist-friendly Osaka seems to be, with English translations on the vending machines etc. Looking forward to more videos & the rest of the trip!
Thank you very much! Yeah, we were sure surprised as well and we'll be showing some more budget meals, breakfasts and street food soon.
You guys gained a new sub in me! I find your vlog series so unpretentious and a breath of fresh air for travel blogs...actually informative both in cultural and practical aspects. Love this channel!

It’s your first time in Japan?! You guys are going to love it. I spent 2 weeks there and it wasn’t enough. There is so much to see! I feel like even 2 months won’t be enough!
Thank you very much! A agree with you. 2 weeks, 2 months it isn't enough. Not even 2 years.
Awesome day! Their food is just so good. Yum.

Thanks for the tip. I am now even more excited about Osaka.
Thank you! That is great to hear. We just loved Osaka.
What a great video to start your Japan adventure, really enjoyed it and can’t wait for more . I live in London and I can tell you japan is cheaper and when people like myself thought it was so so expensive it’s actually a myth. Great work guys 👍🇬🇧
If convenience stores had as good food in the US as they did in Japan, I would eat there every day! But wow, the metro station looks super complicated. Osaka is so amazing! I can't wait for more of your Japanese series. Your editing is so perfect!
Thank you very much! I totally know what you mean. Convenience stores in Japan are next level. We'll be making a video about the entire experience later on in this series. Once we got the hang of the metro it was fine but it took us a few tries...lol
Japanese convenience store sushi is as good as any restaurant if not better than many in the US and Australia where I'm from!
This was fun to watch, I love how you guys keep it real 😉 👍👍
Thank you very much! We were sure pumped to be there.
On another big trip. you guys are busy traveling the world. nice

Loved the vlog first time viewer of your channel
Thank you!
Love the video and the music guys.
Thank you very much!
Its been 8 years since I visited Osaka and Kyoto and I really have to go back. Seeing you guys eat at Coco's put a big smile on my face as its one of my fave chain restaurants and the food is so good. I always spice it up to level 3 and have tried several of the toppings. Can't wait to return next month.
Thank you! That is so cool to hear! We love that place :)
I love you guys been following since HK Macau days you were spot on for Tim Ho Wan we loved it we will be going to Japan too next month Osaka / Kyoto /Tokyo be safe will be watching all your content
Thank you very much! That is so exciting to hear about your upcoming trip. We'll be covering all 3 cities on our channel :)
Your videos almost always have such a mellow vibe which I appreciate. Jet lag or not. You DID do a good job, Sam. This was a great video. Japanese curry looks comforting, a little like Asian poutine (sorry 🇨🇦).
Thank you very much! It is a thicker sauce/gravy kind of like poutine :)
Love you both from the very start ❤️
Ah, thank you very much! :)
I love how you showed how to buy the metro ticket. Very informative.
Thank you! We kind of fumbled around to figure it out but we eventually got the hang of it ;)
楽しんで下さっていてとても嬉しいです!素敵な思い出になりますように・・!!
ありがとうございました!
Yey! Been waiting days for this!
Ah, thank you! We're trying to get caught up on edits.
Welcome to Japan!!! Saw your video before my trip to Madrid this Summer. And I’m so happy you are travelling Japan! Yes, the foods - there are tons of options and you can eat cheap. Food is the only thing I miss about Japan whenever I'm abroad. As a Japanese I would recommend Nagasaki. SF, Lisbon and Nagasaki are quite similar they have fantastic views. Please enjoy and have a safe trip. 東京の動画楽しみにしてます。日本のファンより。
Japan looks so beautiful and serene.
Thank you! That is a great way of describing many parts of Japan.
Another great video!
Thank you!
Osaka was our favourite city in Japan - people are so friendly, food is AMAZING! Just the coolest vibe.
Thanks! That is so cool to hear. We feel the same way. It has such a friendly vibe for being a big city.
agree i feeled so home in hiroshima and i was there only for 1 day lol my favorit big cities: Tokyo->Kyoto->Hiroshima->Fukuoka->Sapporo->Osaka->Nagoya
I’m glad you love Osaka! I hope you can make it to Nara and Kyoto because those are amazing cities too! I have been to Japan 8 times already and went to many prefectures! I still can’t get enough of the beautiful scenery, amazing food and wonderful people. I come from Philippines which is why it’s convenient for me to go to Japan a lot. Taste as much food as you can and don’t be afraid to talk to people there because they are really helpful.
Thank you very much! Nara and Kyoto and definite musts for us on this trip :)
I agree that eating in Japan doesn’t have to be as expensive as people fear. One good tip if you don’t mind eating later in the day is to buy prepared meals at supermarkets or in the food courts in the basements of department stores late in the day. They discount these meals significantly before closing. I think if you stay out of the subways during rush hour, the crowds are not too bad even in Tokyo. Japan is far more affordable to visit than Iceland or Scandinavia.
Thank you! That is one of the best tips I think anyone can known in Japan. We experienced discounts of 30,40,50% during these hours at night and sometimes would have the food the following day.
I don’t find Scandinavia expensive for food or transport when visiting!
I do that all the time
I am heading over to japan in a months time, can't wait to see what you got up to and pick up some tips!
Thank you! That is really exciting to hear. How long will you stay and where do you plan to go?
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos I am headed over for 12 days, doing 6 in Tokyo, 3 in Kyoto and 3 in Osaka. Have been to Tokyo before but not spent much time in Osaka/Kyoto very very excited!
Great video guys! You can also get a reloadable metro card called Suica or IC card. You can also use it in Tokyo and at some convinience store as a prepaid cash card. Hope you find this helpful! Safe travels!
Thank you! Awesome tip! We end up getting a Suica card soon.
So glad you guys are finally doing Japan!!! I hope one day I can go there!
Breejet Yes! Go! It’s worth every penny!
Thank you! Hope you can go there soon!
Agree with you!
You have to.. save up !!
Really miss Osaka, especially the food in Dotonbori!
Dotonbori is awesome! Hope you can go back again soon :)
I suggest for you to purchase an IC card, either pasmo, suica or ICOCA card. They are reloadable card to be used in almost all subway trains and convenience stores (konbini コンビニ ). You can just tap the card in turnstile and go, then reload it once the balance is low. It's really convenient plus you can also use it in Tokyo 😊 Japan is my favorite country to visit, I've been there twice 😊 have fun! 😊
Thank you! That is a great tip. Much appreciated.
Just watching the vid now and thinking the same thing. You can also use the cards at vending machines. We were there this time last year and are very jealous! We also recommend breakfast at the Drip X Cafe in Shin Osaka Station, and trying some 'oden' from the convenience store. Have fun!
But if you are gonna buy tickets using coins, just feed as many as you can in at once. Nobody got time for one by one!
Oh wow it is gonna be two months in Japan with you ? So I will travel with you :) have a nice day guys!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, I am so looking forward to the upcoming eps. One question: I have always been curious about the abundance of drink choices in those vending machines. Do they have healthy options as well or is it all sugary chemical stuff?
Thank you! You can find some sports drinks and some that serve ginseng but for the most part it tends to be sodas, coffees and artificial fruit flavours.
Thanks for the super helpful demo of the buying a train ticket in Japan...one less thing to be intimated about in Japan. I am now hoping there is something similar about ordering ramen at a machine.
Thank you! Hahaha...we made a lot of mistakes but finally got the hang of it
Audrey , you are loving that Sushi!!! Great to see you in Japan🙂 You both look really excited👍 Good that you don't have to tip over there. 2 months in Japan!!!!! Yeah🙂
Thank you very much!
Nice video...very peaceful country..Japanese people have their own peaceful culture....Japan is simply the best..Everything is clean, people don't smoke every where,no crime to speak of..The Japanese people are the best, friendly, very helpful ,polite...How lucky it would be to live in a country like this...
Love this country & people...I've been Japan last year for 7 days...if i have a opportunity I'd like to visit there again and again ...
Thank you for uploading this beautiful video...
Do more videos...like to see more places in beautiful Japan..
I don't know why, but watching you guys traveling is so comfortable. And I am watching it from Taiwan, where I live. Hope you guys visit Taiwan next time.
Thank you very much! We'd love to come back to Taiwan again :)
Great as always & I really like the first track.Artist name?
Hello guys! Come visit us in Korea again. The weather is nice and cool. Leaves are starting to change. Beautiful autumn season is perfect time for you to rediscover Korea and enjoy some delicious Korean food. Airfares are super super cheap from Japan to Korea on LCC's like Jeju Air or T'way.
Separating the dish from the rice .. brilliant!
Thank you!
Love your vids as always, I was wondering what kind of a backpack and Sam using and where exactly are you staying in Osaka my husband and I are planning to go there in 2020 thank you so much For the awesome job you guys do in sharing every detail about the countries your visit you are one of the cutest couples God bless
Thank you! We use Osprey Sojourn bags. We highly recommend them. They're not cheap but they've very durable.
I can't stop giving LIKE to this videos before I watch them! Is that a bad habit or what ? Nice job ...
Thank you very much! We appreciate it :)
Great video guys! Pork cutlet looks so damn good! You guys gotta hit some ramen places!
Thank you Scott! Ramen is our next video coming out this weekend :)
For the transportation, it is convenient to use the ICOCA card or Suica or PASMO card, that can be used in train, subway, bus and inclusive for payment in any shops like convenience store.
Yaaaay! And I’m going to go over and subscribe to your Spanish channel now too. I’m learning Spanish and this will be helpful!
Thank you! How long have you been studying?
Love the vending machines in Japan. One way to tell if drinks are hot or cold is by looking at the color or the labels where the prices are. Blue label= cold, red = hot. Same at convenience stores
I’m at home relaxing and really really want to watch this but the wife will kill me if I watch without her lol 😆 loving your channel guys 👍🇬🇧
Thank you! Hahaha...you're a good man!
Some of the vending machines do have hot coffee. Samuel you have to go to one of those kaitenzushi restaurants. The conveyor belt ones, is more like fast food sushi but its really good. Also tsukiji fish market moved to another location, this is a must and dont forget the great buddha I meantioned earlier in kamakura.
Thank you! Bullet sushi is coming up very soon on our channel :)
Ever since I came back from japan, I think about it everyday.. don’t forget to try the gyudon chains Sukiya or Yoshinoya and don’t be afraid to try random things at the convenience stores, they’re always the best ones!
Thank you! We're going to try and eat as much as we can. It sounds like you had a great trip.
Really like your videos and the travel trips. Anyways any new European travel series coming up?
Thank you! We don't have any Europe series coming out soon but we'd like to travel in the region again in the future.
So true!! In Japan you will see so many bicycles! Maybe because the trains/metro are always so crowded plus they are not cheap at all. Plus you do some sport of course :)
I think it is great!
Just discovered you guys ! Love the content and information ! I, myself am a travel and tourism student graduate and now a flight attendant ! So this is wonderful for me. Also much love from Canada !!
Also to add- how do you guys travel so much??? What do you do for a living to earn money?
Thank you very much! Congrats on your job. We work online to keep things going.
Only in Japan convenience store is so convenience. I can't wait to visit Japan. The most awesome beautiful country in the planet. I love Japan! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🇯🇵
Thanks! COol to hear. The convenience stores in Japan are incredible.
Hey guys! Great first impressions video. Re: the vending machines, below each drink it had a blue label with cold (つめたい、tsumetai) written in Japanese. Red labels have atatakai (あたたかい) written on them, meaning hot. But your vending machine didn't have any hot drinks.
Someone else mentioned buying an IC card or ICOCA. It costs ¥2000 and includes ¥1500 of credit to use. ¥500 acts as a deposit on the card which gets refunded when you return it. Way more convenient than buying tickets each time. And they can also be used in other major cities.
Coco Curry House is amazing! The thing about Japanese chain restaurants is that they're amazing! Other chains I recommend are Sukiya for beef rice bowls and Ichiran Ramen for the best ramen!
By the way, I'm a travel vlogger that lives in Osaka! Let me know if you guys need any help with anything else Japan-related or even show you around. :)
Hey Lin, thanks for the extra info.
Your channel has lots of great content from Japan 👍
Thanks for explaining the situation with the deposit on the IC cards, as we weren't 100% sure what the deal was there 👍Samual and Audrey should definitely hit you up for some advice on what to see, or even do a collaboration vid, that would be awesome too see!
@@TheWorldnUs Thank you!
@@LeonandTash Thanks! When you're leaving the country, you can ask station staff about getting that ¥500 back or just keep the card for next time you visit. :)
You can buy rail tickets for 2 or more persons at once u just click the image that indicates how many persons at the left side of the machine. But I think you might have gathered it now how to use those ticket vending machines .☺️
I’m glad you have found the best way and cheaper way to enjoy Japan. It’s truly expensive but if you find a way to live wisely it is really a wonderful country and one of a kind😃Enjoy your stay👍🎶
I was gonna say I too was shocked at how cheap sushi and other food is there. If you get a chance go to Takashimaya food court near Shinjuku Station. It's a luxury food paradise and around 5pm, all the Toro sushi etc is half off. The desserts and everything are amazing
Next time you guys go to the coco curry place, please try their omrice curry, basically an omelet covered rice with curry sauce, it’s amazing!
Thank you! That sounds delicious :)
love your videos, you have a way of making the viewer feel like they are traveling with you.how do Japan costs compare with say western europe?
Thank you very much! Vegetables, fruits and transportation are more expensive but we've found more budget restaurants and better public transportation systems that are cheaper in Japan.
.. life is traveling .. Iam fan from Saudi Arabia we loves you both 😘
Thank you very much!
Just some friendly advice, y'all should consider getting the tourist pass as it is much cheaper than buying multiple single tickets for subway. Enjoy Osaka and have an awesome time!
Thank you! That is an awesome tip! We end up getting a card shortly after this.
This next trip to Japan will be our 5th trip . First 2 times was just Tokyo then we found HyperDia and worked out how and when what trains go where so many Shinkansens latter from Aomori in the north west to Akita and Takayama to Hiroshima in the south and loved every bit of it from the hotels airbnb's next is Okinawa and staying in a traditional Japanese Ryokan .with Breakfast and dinner provided .
U guys travelling anywhere end of the year? I’m so stoke for my upcoming trip to Europe... have booked several restaurants and the one I am most excited about is Tickets @ Barcelona... had to make online reservations at 6am (my local time) Cos they get fully booked within 3-4 minutes each time they release new reservation slots
Will be Visiting Scotland too after watching ur vids and will try some haggis & definitely get us some gin & whiskey after seeing the joy on Sam’s face
Thank you! You have some really exciting travel plans :) Scotland is just awesome! We're hanging low for the time being but I might be taking a short trip to India solo (Sam speaking here) to film with another youtuber to close off the year.
Guys when in Tokyo you should go to Nagiya in Yoyogi (Shibuya). It's a little yakitori bar and they've got GREAT food! Try the 'Mt. Fuji Soup' with cold Asahi.
One of the best countries I lived in!
Great to hear Barbara! Where did you live in Japan?
Bucket list😍
Awesome to hear! Hope you can visit soon.
Walk all over like you said you sometimes find unexpected things like a tiny shrine in between two big buildings.
Yeah, it is incredible. It makes you just want to explore without purpose.
Wow!
Thanks!
Hey Audrey and Sam firstly love your videos. I miss Japan so so I am in the process of relocating there. Secondly FYI they gave Sam a spoon for his curry and rice not because it was to soupy but because that is how you eat curry rice 🍛 in Japan. You do not use chopsticks.
Thank you for letting us know. That is cool you are relocating soon.
Hi there! I’m a new subscriber, as of this morning. ☺️ I love that you’re both going to be visiting Japan for a while. I’m of Japanese descent, and was blessed to be able to spend 3 months there, when I was a young child. I have tons of family there. Hoping to visit again in a few years. Meanwhile, I’ll get to follow you both through your adventures. I hope you’ll get to visit Nikko, especially during this time of the year. Edo Wonderland (Edomura) in Nikko is an amazing theme park that depicts the life and culture of the Edo period. Every employee is dressed in period clothing. They have ninja and samurai shows. I think you can even dress up in a ninja outfit, and put on a kimono as well. I highly recommend a visit, if you can. Thanks for sharing your trip! Looking forward to watching your other videos!
Thank you very much! Welcome :) Where are you watching from? That is so cool to hear about Nikko. We'll be visiting Nikko later on in this series.
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos.......Awesome! You’re going to love Nikko! I hope you’ll try the grilled Ayu (Fish) on a stick. ☺️ I wish I could say that I’m following you from some exotic location. Lol! I’m here in Southern California......
Hi guys! I’m a big fan of the videos.
I’m going to Osaka in April and I was sad that the Airbnb listing is not available. Where in Osaka do you recommend staying? Namba? Chuo Ward? Nishi Ward? Thanks
Thanks Juana! I think Japan changed its rules regarding to airbnbs so many listings have since vanished. Namba is maybe the most popular but honestly anywhere near a metro station would be great as getting around Osaka is easy by subway.
