  • In today's Life of Smokey review i'm taking a close look at the brand new 2022 BMW R1250 GS Adventure triple black from Bmw Benelux for the first time ever. It's a fun and comfy adventure motorcycle , nothing bad i can say about it besides the small storage in front and the terrible double stand.

Some analogies: 1) the gs is like the good wife , it cares for you , is there whenever you need her , but the sexytime is lights out and missionary. The ktm still cares for you , but with a temper and the aoocasional dishes flying around and you microwaving your own meals occasionally. But the sexytime is wild in all angles and all kinds off fluids flying around...
    2) the gs is like drinking still water: you know it is healthy, and you can and should drink lots of it , but it is tatseless and even maybe a bit dull .
The ktm is your monster energy drinks , full of caffeine and other shit , you know its bad but you drink it anyway becease it gets you PUMPED
    :P
    I own a 2018 sas btw :p

You’re right about this motorcycle. It’s absolutely perfect to ride. KTM makes a very good bike, but other than the raw, scary power of the KTM 1290, hands down the BMW is the superior motorcycle. I don’t know why people need to refer to it as the old man's bike, it’s offensive. The fact of the matter is the BMW R1250GSA is a very expensive motorcycle (you get what you pay for) and the buying market is by and large older people who can afford it. I’m 66 and rip it up on my '21 GSA.

  • @josebatista3914

The GS is a good bike to take us more comfortably from point A to point B.
The SAR is a good motorcycle to take us with a little less comfort from point A to point B but with much more pleasure and with the necessary comfort to do the kms we want.

    • @MagnumMuscle1000
      @MagnumMuscle1000 Před rokem +1

I have owned both and the 1290 is no less comfortable (all it really needs is a bigger screen and an aftermarket seat) but has a lot more off road capability.

I never tried the SAS, but just love my GSA. Had the 1200 and then upgraded it to the 1250. I just adore how re-assuring it is to ride it fast in the twistied, flicking it from one side to another. Also I recognised that I rarely rev it to red line but use that immense amount off torque in between corners. It's just so much fun. Beats everything. I've seen KTM's sneak away in straight lines, but then in the corners they are just not sure-footed. I've had stronger bikes, but this beats them all.

I went to my local (150km away) BMW MOTORRAD Dealership in Wilmington North Carolina. Great sales person. Donald showed me a low suspension 1250GSA Triple Black. I thought I was too short after seeing this video, but since we are the same height, I could flat foot it with the setting in minimum and seat in low position. I am now playing the lottery so I can win it and buy one. I've bought a Royal Enfield Himalayan last year ( how I found your channel) and decided I need a better long distance motorcycle. I've looked at buying a Husqvarna Norden, but the dealership advertised a price of $12,499 and when he came back, it was $19,200. Yes, they were trying to take me to the cleaners. Some add on warranty ( only good at the dealership) $3000 in accessories with the paniers and slip on exhaust. Then it was this fee , and that fee. I walked out. They called me today wondering if I was still interested. I said, I will come down now if they want to sell it at the advertisement price. Love this video.

Actually you try to lift the bike on double stand the wrong way. There is a much easier way. Just grab the bike from the steering and the passengers foot peg (and specifically the metal bracket above, as close to the foot peg as you can) and then try to lift. It makes a world of difference. Just try it.

Before purchasing my KTM1290 SA/S in June, I did my research.
The BMW came in #3 out of 4 behind the 1290 SAR #1, the Ducati Multistrada #2 and the Harley Pan-am was #4.
I love my KTM and like you said, I love the "respect" and "thrill" that LC8 makes and just the raw power. I named mine Klaus. The Austrian War Horse.

But as everything else was looking pretty well, I went to the highway and took her the beans and the warning message disappeared immediately and it never came out again…
I love the bike but when I had the 1200GS and after the 1250 GS, neither of them gave me red light warnings. That’s the only thing That KTM makes me remember about the GS’s that I had🤙

I like the GT and the KTM orange but I would not hesitate goin back to the BMW GSA. I found it more comfortable, its more upright. However, despite my strong dislike of KTM as a company because of their mean out of warranty attitudes and their no so dependable electronics, I'm still hanging onto my KTM because its fun to ride and not so many own them. Seems every biker and his dog has a GSA these days and the price of them!!!!.

July 1-22 4500km. . I am 197cm tall, and the windscreen is not tall enough for me but that is changeable. I can get it up on its center stand with both paniers and the top box loaded to bursting, its not "easy" but it goes up the first time, are you sure you didn't have it in gear? In Canada I have Heidenau gravel road tires because it gets lots of gravel roads. the riding modes for the bike are magnificent, the enduro mode is perfect for gravel roads even with such a heavy bike. In regards to this vs a KTM, even in Austria this is the bike you see..... likely 10 to 1 over big KTMs.

Center stand BMW: i think it is difficult to put it on the stand because the center of gravity on the GS is lower. Pre owned a KTM 1290 SuperAdventure T, the one in white with the 30 liter tank, and it was indeed easier to put on the center stand. Now i have the 1250 GS HP but have managed to find my way of putting it on the center stand. Loved my KTM but quality of build on the GS is better. IF only KTM would have done some things different and by that I mean the choice in material(s), the GS would have a more serious competitor.

If it has to be big adventure, then BMW hands down for all the reasons. I use to have a 2016 GSA. But if you want it funnier, more speed is not the way; the dirty 300EXC is the way! 🙂 I use to have one of these too, plus a 450F and a 690R. Sold them all for a 890 thinking is the best compromise, but neeaah.. 99% of what I can do with this medium cow I could have done with the big cow, plus ride to the Moon and back in style. Bigger tank, no chain worries, wind protection, much comfier, oozing quality in the smallest detail, perfection. If you can't afford 2, then GSA, always! But if you can and you are dirt oriented, have a 2strokes chainsaw like the 250EXC, will change your life. The big KTM is neither donkey nor horse. Oh, I use to have a 990Adv too. Powerful, fast, big, useless :-)

How KTM stand for wind protection compared to GS? GS has big tank. And I like that. On KTM I can install bigger windshield. I was driving all year around, and my knees are cold now. So looking to protect them better on future bike :) Good videos Smokey! :) BR...

A Super Adventure R with the Super Adventure S screen on it is just as good when it comes to wind protection.
The 2 boxer engine cilinders sticking out with heat up your shins and knee don't worry about that. The KTM will give you more crazy fun times 😁

It really depends on how often, how far and what sort of roads you ride in. Currently I ride daily about 95km to/from work. I go on rides that can cover 2800km in 2 days. The GS would do that although my 1400GTR has the ability to give a scary feeling when you open the throttle. The GS doesn't.
The KTM will give more smiles than than longevity of your rear tyre. It also has the potential to get your licence taken away from you very quickly. So many things to like although on single trail they do feel big.
The GS ringing for help would be a feature that would be modified (deleted) quickly if I owned it.
I think you set the standard high with the Norden 901 and I'm thinking these bikes don't quite make it to that level.

I am 5 ft 8 (similar to Smokey?). I have the KTM SD GT and love it. My gripe with the SD is for me the wind is bad at higher speeds. I had to put a big screen on. Other than that I love it, best bike I have ever owned. The GS looks a bit more refined, maybe worth doing a test drive? 🧐 I am ‘old’ now at 42, so probably makes sense 😅

    • @LifeofSmokey

Clearly the GS is more road oriented than KTM in general. 1290 from KTM it's a beast but less polished than the GS. Probably best of both worlds would be a Honda Africa Twin. Even if the GS is premium quality for someone off-road passionate the boxer engine is a total deal-breaker tbh. The KTM gas tanks are already super big as they are and the boxer is just too much imo. Strictly for touring yes, you got all the motives to take the GS. Greetz from Brussels, had great fun watchin your videos!!🤟

Nearly bought a GS last week. I'm travelling about 1000kms per week at moment and thought must have a GS. Then I got on my SD GT. The GS is a good bike, does everything well but there is no excitement, no soul. I Don't think its an age thing, I'm 68 but I need the buzz, the little bit of fear keeps me going. No excitement ? Did you put it in dynamic mode and crack the throttle? I giggle like a little kid when I open that boxer up. I love the torque of my GS. For me the refinement is its soul albeit it’s not exciting as a hooligan KTM but I still appreciate it. Sometimes it takes being in the saddle 12 hrs in a day and then hopping off relatively fresh to appreciate this. Few bikes pull that off in my book.
