This song is really about loss of innocence, a common theme in Tuomas’s lyrics. Growing up, losing that sense of wonder, wishing to get that back. That time when tears flowed freely, whether from joy or sorrow. Uillean pipes are also known as elbow pipes. Basically, bagpipes that instead of blowing to fill the bellow it is filled by pumping the right elbow, then compressing withe left elbow to force the wind through the pipes. There is another great song from this show, Dead Boy’s Poem, with some deep and personal lyrics, that Floor nails, and my favorite little guitar solo from Emppu. The thing that always amazes me about the Buenos Aires show is that Floor was horribly sick that entire week... and apart from maybe 2 or 3 tiny notes here and there across the ENTIRE 2 concerts here and in Colombia, you can hardly notice...

Troy is playing the uilleann pipes. Some folks call it an Irish Bagpipe. The difference of it and the Scottish bagpipe is it has a bellows under the arm that are pumped to feed air to the pipes. You simply pump the air in by moving your arm. That allows you mouth free to sing. Also the stem on it is a wooden reed like a clarinet. Basically, it is a bag fed clarinet. A single pipet with keys. Instead of multiple pipets with holes like the Scottish bagpipe.
First of all congratulations on growing your channel so quickly! This song sounds really happy and upbeat, but lyrically it’s actually quite melancholic. As Tuomas's lyrics are very poetic, they can be hard to decipher. But it gets easier when you get more familiar with his writing. I know that people have already explained the meaning of this song, so I won't go into that. However, I love the way how he describes his childhood in this song through memories like “the scent of grandfatherly love” and “Decembers”. His metaphors are always so well chosen. The pipes Troy plays are indeed called Uilleann pipes, they're the Irish national bagpipes. They really give the music that Celtic feel. The pronounciation is more like 'illen' pipes. They get their name from the Irish word 'uilleann', which means elbow (players pump air into the pipes with a movement of the elbow). Don't they sound great when they harmonize with Emppu's guitar?
South American crowds always look like such a joy to perform for. "Slaying the Dreamer" and "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" from this same show are both great songs and performances.

This is a band of exceptional musicians who work together so well. Troy is so good on so many instruments. For something gentle try Floor and Troy performing How's The Heart at Planet Rock.

Tuomas means that it would be nice to become a person back again who can also cry and let tears to come showing real feelings and emotions not to be cold, hard or remote to issues.
Floor is dancing all over the stage despite the fact that she wasn't 100% at this show. She had been sick with the flu a show or 2 before this. When you do get to lyrics, keep in mind that Tuomas' writing style intentionally leaves the interpretation open, so that the listener may find something in their lives, or possibly in their future, that can relate to the song, thereby making it more meaningful to them. Troy does play many instruments including Uilleann pipes, Irish Low Whistle, Tin Whistle, Guitar with EBOW, Irish Bouzouki. He was once asked if there was anything that he couldn't play as well as he would like to. His answer was 'ice hockey'.🤣 He was singing a 3rd harmony here. This song is being played on the current tour, with Troy taking over Marko's vocal parts and no 3rd harmony. Delain isn't Marko's band, but he did a song with them.

It is about missing the childlike wonder we use to have, and makes reference to Alice in Wonderland. Once we grow old and lose that childlike wonder the world is less fun and full of awe, wanting those feelings back.

I've been binging your Nightwish videos. I understand why people are asking you about the lyrics. Many of their videos do have closed captioning. But, if I were you, I'd go over the lyrics perhaps at the end of the video. I think there are a LOT of reaction channels that sinply play the song, say, " Oh, Wow that was great" the end. And to many if feels like they're just capitalizing on the band's success. I'm sure as a band you understand. And as a band, I would like to see you do well. Maybe, breakdown the lyrics and music? I know you don't want these videos to be an hour long as well. 😆 This song is pretty amazing lyrically! Reflecting back on childhood. You are absolutely correct, those are Uilleanne pipes. I have loved this song since I first heard it, this version just has an extra edge of fun though, Floor is just having so much fun on stage and letting go, living up to the meaning of the song there is an innocence and total lack of guile, real fun on stage. Troy is really having fun with his pipes as well, it is a song to just let go like a child and dance about to Troys pipes are the Uillean pipes pronounced illan or illean and are irish bagpipes, Troy can play just about anything except sport, he is often heard playing the low whistle the whistle the bazouki and rhythm guitar sometimes with an Ebow. Marco is playing the Warwick Vampire bass
The music speaks for itself and lyrics can mean whatever you want in my opinion and that is not to take anything away from the depth of Tuomas's lyrics. On the pipes: there are some really good folk metal bands in Europe that use bagpipes, hurdy gurdies and other traditional instruments in metal music. I just love it! Check out Eluveitie for instance (from Switzerland). Or Feuerschwanz and Saltatio Mortis of Germany just to name some. One of my personal favs is also Grai from Russia. No bagpipes, but a flute.
Even tho you're not getting every word. You can still feel a impact. That is a specialty of Tuomas. Fun fact: Floor was still feeling the effects of just getting over the flu. During this show. Can you tell the Nyquil and wine are kicking in.
Just for info this show was September 30th, 2018. 2019 is the year the Decades DVD was released. BTW, Floor's outfit is custom designed (almost always, due to her heigjt). This costume is by Royal Black Couture in Austria and will never be replicated (part of the conditions for getting the business). The Uilleann (pr. Illian) pipes are Irish elbow-pumped pipes and Troy is now the leading exponent, since Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains died a while ago. Troy can play anything that can't run away from him. Uilleann pipes, pronounced like Ill-ean according to Troy. The word uilleann means elbow in Gallic. You use your elbow to create the air flow that creates the sound. I think lyrics are personal to everyone that listens to a song. The writer can or can not have a meaning with the lyrics but the interpretation for a listener of the song makes music so personal and emotional for all of us...

It don't matter how many times I listen to their music it always takes me to that place. I have enjoyed immensely going down the rabbit hole with you and the excitement I see on your faces. I think the song is about losing the child like sense of wonder as we grow up and age, the ability to see the world with new eyes. Or that we should find a way to keep it. Hence the two dimensions of this song, upbeat and melancholic. It has a similar kind of message as High Hopes by Pink Floyd... by the way, Nightwish did a cover on that and it's also on CZcams.

Please don't worry about any comments from people questioning why you aren't paying more attention to the lyrics - as you rightly said, therer's a lot to take in on a first listen and as musicians I would expect your first reactions to be primarily based on the musical content anyway. Your reactions are just fine. For myself, other than the vaguest sense of what a song might be about, I'm not too bothered about the lyrics until I know the song pretty much inside out so everyone's different. Furthermore, Tuomas has also said that many of his lyrics are left with wide scope for different interpretation so on that basis there's even less sense in rushing to offer opinions on meaning. You're doing the right thing in reacting in exactly the way that feels most natural to you, after all you can only enjoy your first listen once!!
My thoughts exactly. You can just sense that it wouldn't be them if they'd suddenly start with lyrics analysis of some kind on a 1st listen. Would also cause the reactions to become very long. Apart from that, and generally speaking, I've only seen a few reaction channels who really do justice to Tuomas' lyrics (my favourite being Fr. Guylain Prince with his Lectio Musica series). Cheers!

Empu, Tuomas and Yuka were friends since highschool. Marco is an muscisian since the 80's and an underrated bass player and singer. He is also one of a kind. Sad that he was burned out and had enough of the public life and was deeply depressed. I hope he is doing better, now he is more home and just being a husband and dad, beside his own band he still is in. I would love to get to know you guys better and your music. Yep, as Red_Five commented earlier, the The Uilleann pipes are a bagpipe, the national bagpipe of Ireland. There is a bag that needs to be inflated. You just won't have to blow the air into a bag to maintain the pressure like with the more famous Scottish bagpipe. You pump the air with your arm.

On the lyrics: I have over the last 50 years built a library of 15.000+ songs. Of many, I have never studied the lyrics. Of some I did but failed to really understand them (English is not my first language). But I don't mind: I'm in it for the music, anyway. Good lyrics are the cherry that top the cake, and Tuomas always comes up with meaningful lyrics. But these take second place for me. I often go for the instrumental tracks if bands publish these.
Interesting to know if your new material will be a bit influenced from now on. Or inspired by as they say. What's next? Perhaps it is time For the Phantom of the Opera, maybe a double whammy? It would be great to see 2 renditions in one reaction, the one with original singer Tarja and the one with Floor and Henk Poort. Both are spectaculair, both are very different and will not dissappoint. Either way, have fun.

Uillien pipes (pronounced, "ILL-en" according to Troy himself) are also known as "Irish bagpipes", Uillien means "elbow", I think (I'm no expert, I saw a video of Troy on YT somewhere where he explains them). They are operated with a bellows inflated by one elbow (Troy's right elbow here), while the bladder is tucked under the other elbow. It operates that way so the operator can also sing if they like, as opposed to the Scottish pipes which you blow into to inflate.
When an artist releases something out in the world it belongs to the world and can be interpreted in anyway the consumer chooses. People can say what they will, but my take could be different than yours and that's okay it will not diminish the what the artist created for himself. 🤘.
oh, there are my folk or traditional instruments that goes with metal ;) there are many folk metal bands outthere which use backpipes, Hurdi Gurdi, Fiddle or Violin etc... and you have already learned about the Hu, which are using traditional instruments
Wow! What an improvements! The sound is better, there are subtitles! Everybody has a bit different interpretation, that's not a bad thing. And there is something to say for every different kind of approach. I gave a like for the fifth time, that's my rule to prevent too much cluthering. So I will subscribe now.
This song is really about loss of innocence, a common theme in Tuomas’s lyrics. Growing up, losing that sense of wonder, wishing to get that back. That time when tears flowed freely, whether from joy or sorrow. Uillean pipes are also known as elbow pipes. Basically, bagpipes that instead of blowing to fill the bellow it is filled by pumping the right elbow, then compressing withe left elbow to force the wind through the pipes. There is another great song from this show, Dead Boy’s Poem, with some deep and personal lyrics, that Floor nails, and my favorite little guitar solo from Emppu. Troy is playing the uilleann pipes. Some folks call it an Irish Bagpipe. The difference of it and the Scottish bagpipe is it has a bellows under the arm that are pumped to feed air to the pipes. You simply pump the air in by moving your arm. That allows you mouth free to sing. Also the stem on it is a wooden reed like a clarinet. Basically, it is a bag fed clarinet. A single pipet with keys. Instead of multiple pipets with holes like the Scottish bagpipe.

This song sounds really happy and upbeat, but lyrically it’s actually quite melancholic. As Tuomas's lyrics are very poetic, they can be hard to decipher. But it gets easier when you get more familiar with his writing. I know that people have already explained the meaning of this song, so I won't go into that. However, I love the way how he describes his childhood in this song through memories like “the scent of grandfatherly love” and “Decembers”. His metaphors are always so well chosen.
The pipes Troy plays are indeed called Uilleann pipes, they're the Irish national bagpipes. They really give the music that Celtic feel. The pronounciation is more like 'illen' pipes. They get their name from the Irish word 'uilleann', which means elbow (players pump air into the pipes with a movement of the elbow). Don't they sound great when they harmonize with Emppu's guitar?

Tuomas means that it would be nice to become a person back again who can also cry and let tears to come showing real feelings and emotions not to be cold, hard or remote to issues.
Floor is dancing all over the stage despite the fact that she wasn't 100% at this show. She had been sick with the flu a show or 2 before this.
When you do get to lyrics, keep in mind that Tuomas' writing style intentionally leaves the interpretation open, so that the listener may find something in their lives, or possibly in their future, that can relate to the song, thereby making it more meaningful to them.

I've been binging your Nightwish videos. I understand why people are asking you about the lyrics. Many of their videos do have closed captioning. But, if I were you, I'd go over the lyrics perhaps at the end of the video. I think there are a LOT of reaction channels that sinply play the song, say, " Oh, Wow that was great" the end. And to many if feels like they're just capitalizing on the band's success. I'm sure as a band you understand. And as a band, I would like to see you do well. Maybe, breakdown the lyrics and music? I know you don't want these videos to be an hour long as well. 😆

On the pipes: there are some really good folk metal bands in Europe that use bagpipes, hurdy gurdies and other traditional instruments in metal music. I just love it! Check out Eluveitie for instance (from Switzerland). Or Feuerschwanz and Saltatio Mortis of Germany just to name some. One of my personal favs is also Grai from Russia. No bagpipes, but a flute.
Even tho you're not getting every word. You can still feel a impact. That is a specialty of Tuomas.
Fun fact: Floor was still feeling the effects of just getting over the flu. During this show. Can you tell the Nyquil and wine are kicking in.

Tuomas' lyrics are very poetic and filled with imagery and metaphors. Many are open to personal interpretations. This is the beauty of poetry. You nailed it. Uilleann pipes, pronounced like Ill-ean according to Troy. The word uilleann means elbow in Gallic. You use your elbow to create the air flow that creates the sound. These are Irish pipes as opposed to the Scottish bagpipes, which are played by blowing into a canter to create the sound.

I think lyrics are personal to everyone that listens to a song. The writer can or can not have a meaning with the lyrics but the interpretation for a listener of the song makes music so personal and emotional for all of us...

I think the song is about losing the child like sense of wonder as we grow up and age, the ability to see the world with new eyes. Or that we should find a way to keep it. Hence the two dimensions of this song, upbeat and melancholic. It has a similar kind of message as High Hopes by Pink Floyd... by the way, Nightwish did a cover on that and it's also on CZcams.

Please don't worry about any comments from people questioning why you aren't paying more attention to the lyrics - as you rightly said, therer's a lot to take in on a first listen and as musicians I would expect your first reactions to be primarily based on the musical content anyway. Your reactions are just fine.
For myself, other than the vaguest sense of what a song might be about, I'm not too bothered about the lyrics until I know the song pretty much inside out so everyone's different. Furthermore, Tuomas has also said that many of his lyrics are left with wide scope for different interpretation so on that basis there's even less sense in rushing to offer opinions on meaning.
You're doing the right thing in reacting in exactly the way that feels most natural to you, after all you can only enjoy your first listen once!!
My thoughts exactly. You can just sense that it wouldn't be them if they'd suddenly start with lyrics analysis of some kind on a 1st listen. Would also cause the reactions to become very long. Apart from that, and generally speaking, I've only seen a few reaction channels who really do justice to Tuomas' lyrics (my favourite being Fr. Guylain Prince with his Lectio Musica series). Cheers!

Empu, Tuomas and Yuka were friends since highschool. Marco is an muscisian since the 80's and an underrated bass player and singer. He is also one of a kind. Sad that he was burned out and had enough of the public life and was deeply depressed. I hope he is doing better, now he is more home and just being a husband and dad, beside his own band he still is in.

Yep, as Red_Five commented earlier, the The Uilleann pipes are a bagpipe, the national bagpipe of Ireland. There is a bag that needs to be inflated. You just won't have to blow the air into a bag to maintain the pressure like with the more famous Scottish bagpipe. You pump the air with your arm.

On the lyrics: I have over the last 50 years built a library of 15.000+ songs. Of many, I have never studied the lyrics. Of some I did but failed to really understand them (English is not my first language). But I don't mind: I'm in it for the music, anyway. Good lyrics are the cherry that top the cake, and Tuomas always comes up with meaningful lyrics. But these take second place for me. I often go for the instrumental tracks if bands publish these.
Interesting to know if your new material will be a bit influenced from now on. Or inspired by as they say. What's next? Perhaps it is time For the Phantom of the Opera, maybe a double whammy? It would be great to see 2 renditions in one reaction, the one with original singer Tarja and the one with Floor and Henk Poort. Both are spectaculair, both are very different and will not dissappoint. Either way, have fun.

Special for you , you must see and hear the metalband “ Within Temptation and Metropole Orchestra” , both bands from the Netherlands.
Uillien pipes (pronounced, "ILL-en" according to Troy himself) are also known as "Irish bagpipes", Uillien means "elbow", I think (I'm no expert, I saw a video of Troy on YT somewhere where he explains them). They are operated with a bellows inflated by one elbow (Troy's right elbow here), while the bladder is tucked under the other elbow. It operates that way so the operator can also sing if they like, as opposed to the Scottish pipes which you blow into to inflate.

When an artist releases something out in the world it belongs to the world and can be interpreted in anyway the consumer chooses. People can say what they will, but my take could be different than yours and that's okay it will not diminish the what the artist created for himself. 🤘.
oh, there are my folk or traditional instruments that goes with metal ;) there are many folk metal bands outthere which use backpipes, Hurdi Gurdi, Fiddle or Violin etc... and you have already learned about the Hu, which are using traditional instruments
Wow! What an improvements! The sound is better, there are subtitles! Everybody has a bit different interpretation, that's not a bad thing.
