Gary was 22 years old when Procol Harum first did this song in 1967, and had a good voice then. He was 61 in this performance and was in great voice. Gary took care of the pipes as he aged. This is the best performance of this masterpiece that will ever be done. Gary may be gone now, but he will always live on through his music.

I'm not 60 yet.... and I'm beginning to realize why people are so amazed when an older person nails it like this... range.. less... volume.. less... sigh. course, I'm not near his caliber, but still, saddened by the loss of what I did have.

Desolate, no doubt. Music is exactly what we all need. Now more than ever. I find it kind of ironic the music which really helped us survive the turmoil of the ‘60’s and ‘70’s has come to the surface again, because it was that good. Times may change but people are people. Epic music and this takes me back to how grand it was live. Thanks, Polo!!

I love the virtual interplay between U.S. and Brit artists of that time - building upon each other's work, swapping ideas etc. The Brit invasion of the States played a great part in bringing the blues back to the U.S public to whom it had for the most part been considered "race music". Beatles, Stones, Animals ..... many of the greatest British bands had learned much from the black artists and re-interpreted it. That's how I (a teenager then here in Australia) got introduced to them and developed a love of blues music. I'm 71 now and still love that music and the 60s stuff that led me to it

I was 12 years old when this song released, 1967. It shook me then and continues to do so, today. I think the organ piece is one of the most beautiful pieces ever written. It never fails to give me gooseflesh! There is nothing like the sound of the Hammond Organ. The lead singer, Gary Brooker, was 22 years old when this song released and was 61 at the time of this video.
He passed away in 2022. His voice was one-of-a-kind and instantly recognizable. Rest In Peace, Gary.

yes , there is a video interview where brooker describes how he wrote the music . he said , he was thinking of Bachs air on the g string and played a few notes of that and then forgot what the next notes were ,so he started to make it up as he went . he said he tried to keep it a sort of air on g string " thingy" ( his words) and on that same day or close to the same day a letter came from his writing partner Kieth with the lyrics .
Kieth said he was a fan of salvador dali and wanted to write lyrics that would express the visuals of a Dali painting , hence the rather odd but fascinating lyrics .

This is an absolute classic song from the early classic rock era, but it's also one of those very rare instances where I think the live performance surpasses the original studio recording. Just phenomenal.

This song brings back memories of parties in the late 60's, when it was late the lights were low and this was just a great atmospheric song for a slow dance.

Don't know if anyone has picked up on it yet, but sadly Keith Reid, who wrote the lyrics to this, passed away on 23rd March. It was mentioned that he intended to reveal the meaning of the song before he died, but the end was sudden and he didn't have the time. RIP, Keith. You wrote a masterpiece.

The original studio track was great but this live version is fantastic because it has been enhanced by the choir and orchestra. Gary Brooker's voice aged like a fine wine. R.I.P. Gary.
