The thumbnail looks like we’re seeing what Brad SHOULD look like after some of these let’s tries
Thays exactly what he just said. Duh
I thought ReviewTechUSA is the guest reviewer.
I loved this movie. As a formal teacher, I must let you know that there are several teenagers just like her, where you would think they are pure evil. They generally have been traumatized and taking it out on the world. I hope we can get more movies that show how some people are really living, though small and not for everyone.
As a current college teacher I agree 100%. I have seen students like this. And as someone who works as a psychologist I see this as well. I feel her character makes Charles' blind desperation to make one good thing of his life (Ellie) all the more heart breaking with the goodness around him he ignores
How exactly did she almost kill Charlie twice? I remember her trying to force him to walk to the front door, but even then he is the one who decides to actually try doing it, and if it does almost kill him, it’s only because he’s been slowly killing himself for years.
And him saying that he loves his daughter after that isn’t ridiculous because Charlie has already been given a one-week-to-live diagnosis and he clearly finds no value in his own life.
@@kirkengstrom917 The sleeping pills. Feeding a 600 lbs person those kinds of pills can be easily fatal, even without congestive heart failure.
Glad to see Brendan Fraser is getting more roles and is making an epic and emotional comeback as an actor.
Agreed, I hope that he gets nominated for a slew of awards for this film!
I'll always a soft spot for him in The Mummy.
@@somerandolad 👍
There is no version of this story where he doesn't win the Oscar.

I'm glad I saw this movie. I read some articles critiquing how the film portrays someone who's obese but honestly, I don't think the film had any malicious intentions like "Oh look at this disgusting freak show of a man and feel better about yourself". To me it was more like "Listen to the story of this three dimensional person who's trauma and unhealthy coping mechanisms developed into an eating disorder". It didn't feel dehumanizing or patronizing to me, and I'm so happy to see Brendan Fraser in a role where he could show off his talent. Honestly I'm not sure if I could watch The Whale again because of how heavy it is, but I don't regret watching it at all.
Almost my review verbatim. The performances are great but goddamn is it hard to sit through at points. I'm glad I went but I think once is enough for me too.
I saw it 2 days in a row , and it may feel like that at first, but I found I got more out the 2nd viewing. Observe more things when you know what's coming. Just my opinion
@@jessejzcutter4291 maybe...having my own weight issues and food addiction this might have hit me a bit harder than most people...maybe the toughest movie I have ever sat through. Watching Brendan Fraser and seeing the way others were affected by him part of me was asking the question if I don't get a handle on my own issues could that be me in that chair at some point and could I be hurting the people I love so badly. I don't regret seeing it and I don't rule out seeing it again at some point...but not for a while at least. It definitely shook me.
*Average People:* "This is Brendan Fraiser's comeback! He's so good!!!"
*Me, An Intellectual:* "Those of us who've been watching _Doom Patrol_ for almost 4 years have been saying this!!!"
James Gunn should add Peacemaker to Doom Patrol. Could be more fun. I haven't watched much of Doom Patrol beyond the first half of Season 1, though. Been meaning to get back into it.
@@georgemetcalf8763 ...or perhaps the other way around. the budget is starting to show in later seasons.
I'm glad Brendan is back. I really enjoyed the first two Mummy movies back in the day.
While I haven't watched the film yet, reviews seem to be mostly lukewarm. However, Brendan's performance has been almost universally praised, so hopefully this is the start of his epic comeback.
Watched the film last night. Absolutely incredible. Not a dry eye in the theater by the end
Ellie as a character is an issue carried over from the stage play that Aronofsky dialed up to 11 and told Sadie Sink to do the same. I think she could, if Aronofsky had wanted, bring more to that character, like her being clearly damaged by not having a father figure, than just basically a budding sociopath like the play and clearly the movie.
Honestly, I disagree a lot about Ellie but I might be alone in that. She reminded me a lot of people who I know personally really really well and have very meaningful relationships with and I did see the angle Charlie had about her by the end of it and I feel like the ending proved him right, but again like I said I could be alone in that assessment since most reviewers I've talked to think she's awful and ruins the movie. To me she was one of the best parts of it and grounded the movie to the types of relationships that I can really relate to at this point in my life.
i also agree with you, for me the scenes between ellie and thomas could have been made into another movie and i would be interested in it. in my opinion i thought they had good chemistry, and it added a different tone to the movie which i liked.
No Aronofsky, you're not gonna depress me again. I still got scenes from Mother, Requiem, and Noah haunting my head....
Not seeing another film by him.
@@Deactorr xD
It's basically the same movie as the Wrestler. A broken man tries to mend his relationship with his daughter.
Finally got to see this movie after inflexible showtimes and bad traffic in my area
Worth the wait; this was an amazing comeback for Brendan Fraser
Darren Aronofsky really makes the acting, the music, and the emotions soar
Felt strange having this in a pan and scan ratio but I think it’s supposed to make the audience feel just as confined as Charlie is
I actually really like Sadie Sink in this; she does show some redemption at the very end right at the point the credits show up
People are incapable of not caring, all that matters is what you say, in a way we are all whales; doesn’t matter if we are skinny or fat it’s that we are still full of love, lies, hope, and promising potential to do good for people
The music is very emotionally satisfying, the acting is top notch, and the ending really made me well up with tears
I agree about Sadie 100 percent. Yes she behaves horribly but he abandoned her completely. She must have so much rage and anger built up and she is a very troubled person anyway. And than she sees what he is doing to himself as well. I think half of her rage is the abandonment, the other half is seeing someone who was such a big part of her life killing himself. This was her last chance to have him be part of her life and it has to feel like he is abandoning her again. Imagine the grief in that. I see her in this movie lashing out to protect her heart from being broken again. Not all of us have it in us to work through grief gracefully.
@@danielpatterson5189 yes I’ve already heard from both double toasted and Brad here that Sadie is terrible as a character; like she only has one mode it’s straight up cartoonish
Yes you don’t like her behavior but it is coming from somewhere deeply rooted in her anger towards being abandoned
Any kid heck any teenager would act like this venting out
Brendan Fraser is a legend. Loved him in The Mummy movies and Looney Tunes Back in Action.
The thumbnail is always how I look at this time of year.
This is the second review I've seen where they criticize the binge eating scene for being unrealistic. I think maybe its just hard for people to realize that a metal illness can actually be that bad in real life.
We're inching ever closer to my favorite video, the 10 worst movies list
I look forward to it every year
Why did the thumbnail make Brad look like my summer theatre camp instructor?! 😂
I give this movie a good W
This is your best filter thumbnail ever; I was genuinely confused for a second
It did make me cry not to many movies get much emotion out of me. Glad I seen it always good think when art can touch you on an emotional level
You hit the nail on the head with the daughter. Played fine. Function is fine. But that's a direction choice. What she does near the end to remove one character from the story I thought was 100% sadistic and cruel but even Wikipedia says she was setting things right with that character's family... WHAT?!? I don't think so. At all. Performances are great. Fraser is great. Hong Chau is always great. But yeah movie is fair.
Good review. Going to check this out, along with Plane- over the extended weekend.
That's most of the feedback. Good movie and great performances. Cool review.
👍
This is one of a handful of movies I know I will never be in the mood to watch.
The binge eating scene did make me think of Mr Creosote.
I really want to see this one.
Brad in the thumbnail bears a highly disturbing resemblance to WingsofRedemption.
YES! YES! THATS WHAT I LIKE TO SEE! Can't wait to see him get more roles!
It looks like that Barney Gumble movie, "Don't cry for me, I'm already dead"
Just saw it last night. I've not read the play, but given the fact that the playwright adapted it himself, I'll bet that the character Ellie would be just as insufferable on stage. I think one more scene with her where you grow to empathize with what is clearly a person in crisis would have made everything work more, and that's on Samuel D. Hunter and Aronofsky.
I read it and saw a couple scenes form a staging and she’s actually worse, mainly because of the actor choice. If it was anyone but Sadie Sink, it’s even more glaring how unbearable the character is.
100% agree, for what Sadie Sink was given to work with and what she brought to the role, she did good IMO. I'm not so sure if the character would have transitioned well on screen or even worked, if played by anybody else.
I saw the thumbnail and thought it was an older video of Rich from Reviewtechusa
Loved the thumbnail! 😂
LOVED this movie. Fraser better get the gold!
Doom Patrol and the Whale: Proof that Brendan is a real actor.
Who’s winning the Oscar for Best Actor?
Brendan Fraser, Austin Butler, or Colin Farrell?
All of them. They are great
I want to say Butler given it’s a big showy biopic role, but I’m beginning to lean Colin Farrell.
Fraser should win. Austin Butler was pretty good but the movie Elvis had a bad framing device and focused too much on Tom Hanks' character the Colonel.
Great review man
Brad is always good

That thumbnail..my Good God. 🤣🤣🤣
I'm am intrigued🧐
We need more Mummy!
Brendan deserve an Oscar award. 😁
Fraser needs to have a big comeback. 👍
Love the thumbnail
Loved the whole movie. The binge eating scene was perfect. Such a small insignificant thing like the pizza guy merely laughing softly as he walks away and charlie saying whatever, just shows how significant he wanted to be seen as just the person he is. From between the couch to his door, he is merely a voice and a culmination of beliefs, there is no body. A thing that ruins most of his small relationships which stings to a person of bigger size, seeing as his mind snowballs and he just keeps eating and eating was really such an impactful scene to me, although shot a bit goofy it did its number.
My mom wasn’t overweight and she died of CHF…. She’d gain 50-90 lbs over night…. The Hosp would take it off… over and over for almost 3 yrs….. it sucks. I might skip this one
I wonder what roles Fraser would've gotten if he hadn't fallen of the map after the Mummy 3. I could actually see him as part of something like the MCU or DCU. Glad he's getting more attention now.
He’s already on Doom Patrol
Oh my God, Brad!
This movie does for eating food, what Jaws did for swimming in the ocean.
Agreed. I think she’s a good actress but that character, hated her. I suppose that’s the point? Also didn’t like her character in stranger things either. Felt very similar
Brad becomes the snob in real time lmfaoooo 2:33
I liked Sadie Sink's character, I thought the characterization works. I've known people lile her: they are veey real, no matter how cartoonish they seem.
OMG, Brad. Is that your dad in the thumbnail? So wholesome😍
The movie is based off a play, and given the subject matter, there's not a lot of room (no pun intended) for. lot of scenery.
Outstanding movie! Fraser is back in Hollywood, and I am here for it.
god this was good. brendan fraser so good, and i do agree with brad alot on this espically about ellie. honesty u could of taken the daughter out and would it have had that much effect of the story huum i am not so sure. u could still tell the same story but it could of just been about the wife and everything else.
over all yeah i go B but brendan fraiser deserves this hes been over due for this for along time, also the actress who played the nurse was also amazing cause u felt her pain as well being there for charlie and doing anything for him
Your large-en-ized thumbnail version of yourself looks EXACTLY like my Social Studies teacher from 7th grade. That was nutty.

Why is ReviewTechUSA in the thumbnail?
Loved the movie.
Rich from Review Tech USA? You make movie reviews now?
That thumbnail 😭
Great movie
Your thumbnail looks exactly like one of my cousins. No exaggeration, it's uncanny
The thumbnail makes him look like Tom Segura
That is one disturbing thumbnail
Well acted but I really dislike narratives that are circular. I felt nothing happened throughout. No growth, no redemption and everyone around him contributed to his self pity. Only one character did anything good and that was purely by accident.
The Wrestler
Similar movie.
I know this is a serious movie, but you look like Tom Segura in your thumbnail. I can't stop laughing at it! 🤣
Thumbnail looks like Tom Segura.
It has gotta be better than Mother right?
Yes, Mother! was one of the worst things I've ever seen and I watch 2-3 movies a week.
Brad turned to Rob Reiner.😭
I feel bad for Sadie Sink. I hear she's good in Stranger Things(which I have yet to watch) but hearing Brad saying she plays such an unlikable character is saddening because it feels like a waste of her abilities.
Watch _Stranger Things_ as soon as possible. Easily one of the century's best live-action TV shows so far!!!
It really is. What she is good at is playing emotionally damaged or guarded, which Ellie technically is, except unlike Max, Tess, Ziggy Bermsn, or even her character in Glass Castle, there’s no deftness in the writing.
Don't blame Sadie, blame the people who wrote her character
@@indiecinemaster4699 and once she shows up, gets an emotional core you wouldn’t expect from a show like it.
@@ExplorerDS6789👍👍. I feel the same way about the girl in JW Fallen Kingdom and Dominion.
I can't wait for you to rip into M3GAN in the next couple weeks.
If you know child psychology, and child development, then you would KNOW that the daughter would be exactly like she is portrayed. She grew up with him as daddy until 8, and now she's a teen with an alcoholic mom. Hell hath NO fury like a female teenager scorned. Believe it. But she still wanted daddy. C'mon, her performance was great.
on the bright side, we may not have to watch "Brad Tries."
OMMFG I love your thumbnails 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 and commentary
…why does the thumbnail look like Tom Segura
Ironic how you criticise this movie for your perceived cliches while offering nothing more than a cliche contrarian review... delivered in the most annoying 'on the verge of laughter' voice. One star review of your review!
Doesn't change the fact it's a cliched movie. No Stars.
Who's that in the thumbnail? I thought you might have had a really hard Christmas but nope, not you.
lame tearjerker, had zero effect besides making me sleepy. Shallow potential in terms of story, no room for exploration in any way.
So, The Wrestler let himself go and tries to reunite with his daughter again?
Is that what Brad would really look like if he were fat? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Fat Brad is significantly more attractive than fat Brenden Frasier. I think it's the beard that edges him to top.
With a title like The Whale, I was kind of hoping it would be some docu-drama about a gamer's gambling obsession and how they're spending millions on lootboxes and the like.
I’m glad I checked this movie out of the library to see it and not have to pay for it because The Whale was a god awful movie. I want the time I wasted seeing this garbage given back to me.
Wait, he's in makeup in this? I THOUGHT I FINALLY HAD A CHANCE WITH HIM.
It was definitely a typical Oscar bait, wanky, hollyweird movie. So much happens in just one week of these peoples lives.
Never had a week where a lot happens, I guess.
