i would say the 7up game also was pretty good. I mean I was like 9 years old at the time but relative to other SNES era platformers it was actually quite solid.
@@dakineprotossthere was a 7up game for the original NES and also one for this pizza brand that doesn't exist anymore. I wish I remember the name but I was like 5 at the time lol
Yeah it's a lot to cover, and darkened skye was fun. Figure I'd piggyback your comment to mention chili's burgertime and grimace's birthday though at least vid stated the KFC colonel sanders visual novel (not sure if it counts as a dating Sim since you were cooking and they made the biscuits look amazing).
I know these examples are different but still kinda cool. In the 90's Pizza Hut would give out PS1 demo games with a bunch of different titles that you could play a level or 2 of or disappointingly as a kid just watch a short video of gameplay, non of which were pizza hut related. Just normal titles. Also in the 90's Burger King had a deal which I cant remember the name of exactly. Anyways it was a birthday club where they would send you some stuff in the mail, which included a really cool comic book that was printed with your name in the story to make you part of the rest of the Burger King characters. Another 90's thing was Mcdonalds had cassette tapes for kids that were basically just auditory stories of the Mcd's characters doing things like throwing a party or something. I listened to them alot as a kid on that micro phone cassette player that was in Toy Story lol I know that the last 2 arent video game related but were cool memories about the things fast food chains used to do.
I still remember being like 6 years old going onto 7 back in 2007 and seeing Burger King collaborating with Xbox to create their own video game to be played on the Xbox. I never played it, but that was the most absurd ad I ever seen on tv.
I just don't think video game tie-ins would work anymore: First, the cost has gone up a ton since the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Back in the 1980s I was in my teens and put out a few video games on the Commodore 64 as a one man gaming studio - it took a few months to design and program the game and I only had to cover the salary of one person, myself... so it was easy to be profitable versus having teams of dozens of people reworking a game today. And the next big issue will be time: if McDonald's, as an example, came out with a new burger flavor today and wanted a video game tie-in that game might not be ready for 2-3 years, even if they were just reskinning and retooling an existing game. Like if it was a new "McShrimp Po'Boy Burger" if they have to sit on it for 3 years by the time the game comes out to market the thing, competitors might already have beaten them to the market and customer's might have thought it was an awesome idea in 2024 but in 2027 they might be "Meh, we've moved on..." and no longer crave that flavor.
Love this videos. Good job on the research and execution. Your voice and the male voice are fitting. Music choices are catchy and help transporte to the era that is being explained. Overall kudos
genuinely miss these weird video game tie ins. also burger king just needs to bring back sneak king. it was so charmingly weird and silly that it became a bit of a cult classic.
@1:11 "By 1979, Atari had sold over 1 million consoles" I wonder where are those units now and those other units from other companies like Nintendo, Sega, Microsoft, and Sony?
When I was a kid on the weekends my dad and brother and I would have video game nights and we would play the Burger King pocket racer game and the Burger King bumper car game it was so much fun I will never forget that part of my childhood!!
I actually CAN'T eat and play video games at the same time! When I am playing video games, my hands are too busy with my keyboard and mouse to ever grab a bite of food. Playing with controllers on a console would be even worse. It's idiotic nonsense that people associate video games with snacks.
I do miss that era of gaming. I rented MC Kids many times as a kid, I always got so close to finishing it, but it was fairly long and lacked a save feature or password feature. MC Kids had a sequel, it was called Mick & Mack: Global Gladiators, and while the McDonalds IP was still there (you could collect M's and Ronald occasionally helped you out), but the theme was more about stopping climate change and cleaning up the earth. Interestingly, MC Kids also had a Game Boy port, but only in Europe. When it was brought here to North America, the game was rebranded as Cool Spot. Speaking of Cool Spot, there was also an NES game based on the character, and it was actually a big deal when it came out. Oddly, it wasn't a platformer or anything that would make sense. Instead it was a puzzle game that played kind of like the old board game Reversi. You placed your Spot on a board and had to get more than your opponents before the board filled up. If I recall correctly, it was one of the few games that used the NES 4 player adaptor.
This was super interesting, Weird History! The Cool Spot game looks like fun! I think Weird History Food should do a video on mascots voiced by famous voice actors. Paul Frees, best known as the Ghost Host from Disney's Haunted Mansion was the Pillsbury Doughboy. Mel Blanc of Looney Tunes fame did Toucan Sam. Paul Winchell, original voice of Tigger from Winnie The Pooh, and inventor of the artificial heart, was the voice of the Tootsie Pop Owl, Burger Chef from Burger Chef, and the 1970s version of Jack from Jack In The Box restaurants [as well as the Jack In The Box Bunch] It's especially noticeable with Jack and his fellow Jack In The Box mascot Onion Ring Thing, as you can hear Paul's Jerry Mahoney and Tigger voices respectively. I think it's super cool how tons of mascots were voiced by famous voice actors.
I played that doritos horror game back in the day. I remember having a hard time taking seriously since the page banner read, in all caps, A SNACK STRONG PRODUCTION.
Grimace's birthday was a fun surprise, and chili's burgertime. There's always an occasional event that can be fun. Wish the hello kitty yugioh McDonald's happy meal crossover had alternate art cards rather than the toys/pins, but I am sure people will collect. 6:35 chex quest is on switch too. Shame McDonald's didn't make a collection for modern consoles.
This reminds me of the famous Japan McDonald's Nintendo DS training game for the employees. It even came with a McDonald's Nintendo DS theme handheld. The Burger King Sneak King was an interesting Xbox 360 game that's funny to talk about. There was even a Red Baron video game. 8:37 Didn't know about the Doritos 626 browser horror game. It's extremely unfortunate that we never got Pepsiman in the west. If Pepsi were to put out a remaster or a port+ of the game for modern devices for a western audience, I emphatically think it would do well.
Yeah I legit had sneak king, not sure whatever happened to the disk... But I remember it creeped me out for some reason. Game was actually ok, just creepy.
You omitted 2 things about Spot: There was a game before it called ‘Spot: The Video Game‘ released in 1990. It was a tic-tac-toe style game but heavily featured 7up tie-ins and many Spots. Also Cool Spot was made for the sole purpose as a contest (hence all the 7up and cola branding in the game) where players had to submit a photograph of the last screen to the postal address in the instruction booklet. But since the game did so poorly, nobody noticed it was a contest nor even made it to the final screen and was primarily played as a rental from video rental stores thus instruction booklets most likely were not included with the game.
I was hoping for a mention of Yo Noid and I was NOT disappointed (yes, I know it's a palette swap and I don't care), that card game in between levels broke my heart multiple times
