  • In this video, I go over how to choose a speciality as a new graduate from PA school. As a new grad, it can be quite overwhelming when you have to decide what specialty you want to practice in or what specialty you want your first job to be in. Luckily, as a PA, you can practice in two or even switch your speciality during your PA career. Hope this video helps you decide on which speciality is right for you! Leave a comment below! :)

As a PA of 5 years my best advice on choosing an area to practice, choose what you like not what seems like a good idea. I hear all of the time if I choose ENT I’ll loose all of my other medicine, same with Derm. If you love it go for it. Don’t waste your career feeling like you have to do IM, ER or UC just to keep the medicine. You can be happy from the start. Edit: also so much of your career depends on the people and patient population you work with, not just the specialty. So pay attention, do you like seeing repeat patients on a regular basis? Do you want to see someone once and not get attached? Do you want to help women/men during a harder moment (ER, PP, NICU, etc), there are a lot of options if you hate blood but love the mind consider psych! Whatever you like use that towards your future goal career.

I am going through rotations right now, had my elective in derm last month and loved it! But I'm nervous - I've heard it's so difficult to go straight into derm as a new grad... Do you just apply to a ton of clinics straight out of school or do you have to rely more on networking?

Can PA's have a specialty in nutrition or health and wellness. I'm currently studying nutrition, and the idea of combining it with a masters in PA sounds intriguing but I don't know if its realistic.

I am a second year PA student w/ an undergrad in Nutritional Science. Look into integrative health- I chose my university because they developed a program that includes the nutritional integration. However, it’s still a very niche field in the US due to insurance coverages, ect so job opportunities are hard to come by BUT it is growing as more people become aware of it. Even if it doesn’t take off, I’m SO happy I chose PA. I have been able to use my nutrition education almost everyday in all 9 of my clinical rotations so far & it has earned me great letters of rec from many of the attending physicians!
