  • Most students are never taught how to take effective notes that they can use even after the semester is over. In this video, I discuss how I use Obsidian to take lecture notes that stay make my knowledge unique and stay with me over years and years. I explain the dangers of bad notetaking and how to use my notetaking method, conceptual notemaking, before, during and after class.

    Hi Aidan - loving your videos...quick question... I am a little newer to Obsidian and getting a few of the basics down. When you are doing the up: Tags:: and Related:: - is that a plugin, or are you simple not adding these in manually on every note or above each input. For instance...do you have only ONE up: section per note or are you manually adding multiple up: and Tags:: sections to notes - rather than just using # as a tag? Any resources for those kind of basics would help! Keep up the great videos!

    • @aidanhelfant
      @aidanhelfant  Před rokem

      Glad your loving the videos! I use the plug in templater to automatically add metadata to new notes upon creation. It includes the up section and the tags. The reason there are two :: is because while using the dataview plug in it only understands the code if there are two :: after it. In addition the breadcrumbs plug in requires you to have :: as well. I would watch some videos on what those plug ins are if you want to learn more as it would be too complicated to explain in a comment.

    Absolutely amazing. What is your folder structure. I always am afraid of loosing Uni Notes if I save them as singular concepts all together if I don't use folders. But I also don't want all the seperations folders make in my brain. Having to think again about one subject at a time.
    PS: I already use the ACCESS Model aswell - I just wanna know how you organise Cards in it's subfolders, aswell as Spaces and it's subfolders.
    Generally those subfolders are so confusing and tricky to me and create a lot of stress where to put what.

    • @aidanhelfant
      @aidanhelfant  Před rokem +1

      Totally agree! Generally I try and use folders for organizing the most important things in my PKM system.Things like differentiating between MOCs, Cards, Calendar events, etc. In my spaces folder I separate between academic articles I have written, my newsletter Aidan's Infinite Play, and my writings/videos for my CZcams channel and blog posts. I keep the last two in one folder because often my CZcams videos are recorded from already made blog posts. I just put the video in the top of the blog post after creating it. As for your second question, I don't differentiate between cards with folders. I like to organize mostly with highest order MOCs then smaller MOCs than atomic notes. It varies a lot. If you want a look at my system check out my published vault! publish.obsidian.md/aidanhelfant

    What's your approach to long lectures and subsequentially big long notes?
    Do you keep your long notes and copy individual sections of them to new, shorter, and more targeted notes?
    With this, you have duplicate content in your vault which could become a problem but I'm not really sure.
    Would be interesting to read how you handle that scenario. Great channel.

    • @aidanhelfant
      @aidanhelfant  Před 9 měsíci

      Great question!
      I generally split up the long lecture note into smaller concept notes with links back to the lecture note. There is no duplicate content as I add the information from the lecture note into the smaller concept note.

    Question, if you are waiting seconds to write in your own words, what happens with all the missed info progression as you shift away from the conversation?

    • @aidanhelfant
      @aidanhelfant  Před rokem

      You only write down things that are not USE, Useless, Self-explanatory, or Easy enough to understand.
      THis means you usually won't be taking notes but rather listening. Once you do write you have thought of what you want to write giving you the attentional faculties to keep listneing while writing.

      You can use Obsidian on Mobile. However, I would recommend having it on a computer device as well and syncing between the two using Obsidian Sync. A lot of the plug ins and functionablity of obsidian is difficult on mobile. Especially opening multiple tabs at once.

    yes but if you take a picture in class and link it like in 9:37, where do you lay it down inside of your vault? bc this random material tends to grow over the head and if i put it in a collective folder, it becomes pretty messy. The best solution would be creating an extra source material folder of every course, BUT: If youre facing big files like mp4s, the vault itself can gain mass fast and wont fit with a cloudspace.. so eventually you gotta go inside the vault some day and outsource the big files each out of every single course source material folder. Did you solve this?

    • @aidanhelfant
      @aidanhelfant  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I put images in a special folder called Extras and I use the IMGUR plug in to make it so files I upload into Obsidian get uploaded into Imgur instead of my cloud storage. Than a special Imgur link is put in Obsidian. This way the image is uploaded into the cloud instead of stored on my local hard drive taking up space.

    But do you leave your notes like this for studying? I often Google things to understand topics better but I'm wary of putting it into my notes directly cause I feel like I'd forget that it wasn't a part of my lecture

    • @aidanhelfant
      @aidanhelfant  Před rokem

      Great question.
      If you want to make sure you study only material relevant to the lecture I would add tags to your notes with the lecture content. When you sit down to study, you could pull all of the related notes with a dataview query.
      As for unrelated content inside of the note itself, I'm willing to sacrifice time studying things not directly relevant to the course to have more insightful information in the note. My goal in going to school isn't to get the best grades, it's to learn and dive into my interests.
      It depends on your goals.

    Aidan I just don’t understand something. I barely have time write down what the professor is saying how do you have time to pause and process the information. I’m a minute my professor has already moved on to a completely different point he’s trying make.

    • @aidanhelfant
      @aidanhelfant  Před rokem

      The mindset shift comes with realizing you don't have to write down everything the professor is saying. Much of it is USE, Unimportant, Self Explanatory, or Easy enough to memorize on the spot. In the case where everything is genuinely important, you shouldn't be writing down that much anyways because it would take away from your mental bandwidth for actually understanding the material. In that case I would recommend taking less notes during class and really understanding it. Then go back after class and take notes if you think it's that important.
