I have this EZ Glow Lock Beauty Dish, and I really like it. I have a Godox 400watt light with this Beautify Dish the images with defflector plate & the two diffusers is nice. It is very easy to set up & take down.

I love this brand! I bought their used 36 inch softbox back in 2019 and it’s still going strong. Beautiful quality.

If you use the beauty dish with the two diffusion panels it is pretty much a small soft-box. I have the 26 inch ez beauty dish and they seem to do just fine. As you know the history of the beauty dish...The heavy make -up was applied to the models to lower the face sheen of the models face. It is well known for carving of the facial features. When i use mine, I keep it two to three feet away from the model. That is how you are suppose to use it. Moving feather away will make it a contrast light source.

I used to use the beauty dish all the time. My favorite is the 28 inch glow metal one painted white. When you get the angle and distance right it's just stunning for traditional beauty.
I haven't played much with the glow easy lock yet. I got it to have something lighter on a boom than the metal one. The metal one turned out to be easier to boom.

There are pretty obvious differences in the quality of light between the different configurations, the last of which is the softest light that modifier is able to give. Most collapsible "beauty dishes" come with a deflector plate. In fact, a lot of softboxes in general come with a deflector plate nowadays. A lot of Glow softboxes do for sure. The great thing about the Glow"beauty dish" modifiers is that you can use them to get different qualities of light from soft to medium to hard light. That white Glow 34" is an excellent on location modifier, the perfect go-to size, and super easy to set up and break down. With most of the Glow modifiers the deflector plate only fits one way (never mind what the instructions say). I do wish they would just start using velcro instead of those snaps. Having said that, it's a very tiny grievance. Love that 34" white! I love Glow modifiers in general. I have several of them - "beauty dishes" and umbrellas. I love all types of lighting - hard, soft, in between, dramatic and even flat lighting. Everything has its place.
Oh! Great tip - when I'm done using mine I leave the inner diffuser only halfway fastened (meaning I don't take it off completely. I only unfasten half of the snaps) and the softbox closes perfectly without damaging it!

I recently purchased and returned this very modifier and found that the light across the front diffuser was uneven, no matter how I configured it, but I was using it for continuous light. I imagine you'll get stunning images with it using flash, which is clearly what it was intended for. By the way, beauty dishes are not positioned to the side. It's most used directly over camera, often with a reflector just below the model. It's used for butterfly lighting as well. Of course there's no reason why you couldn't position it like a more traditional softbox.

Thank you. Good information. I have been positioning mine directly over the camera and just purchased a different stand for a reflector.

So would you use the deflector plate or not? Lol
