I spent the last week of 2021 being productive by watching a bunch of tv which includes the hit show on TLC 90 fiancé before the 90 days. Ella is a woman from Idaho who is having trouble finding true love in her own country. that’s when she decided to follow her heart and go for her ideal type. A red haired fox demon named Kurama from the anime YuYu Hakusho. Unfortunately, he is 2D so the next best thing is to meet her Chinese Prince from China - Johnny! My problem is that she isn't saying "he spoke to me in Chinese". The way she says it ("he's saying all these Chinese words...") makes it seem like she doesn't see Chinese as a language, but as a cute, silly thing that's there for her to enjoy. And, considering how she talks about Asians in general and her boyfriend in particular, this is likely the case.

But regarding the language, I think a lot of non-bilingual people have this attitude where they somehow assume that the world revolves around their own language, as if it's the only "real" language in the world. That is the vibe we're getting from her.

Johnny could be teaching Stony some English words, and when he speaks to Ella he THINKS he's saying English words, but he's actually just speaking Mandarin with an accent. Or he has misremembered the words and he's accidentally saying something else that Ella believes is Mandarin. I think this is common among children learning to speak another language. Ella is a weirdo, but I'm sure she's well aware Mandarin and other Chinese languages are their own language. She probably just thinks it's cute Stony thinks he's speaking English when he isn't. But we haven't heard Stony speak to Ella yet, so there isn't any way to know for sure at the moment.

Ella and Johnny seem to be nice people and a cute couple. Ellas obsession though is exactly the reason why we as a society need to continue have conversations about racism.
I don't think Ella has a mean bone in her body but her way of "obsessing" about asian culture, lumping different cultures under the same umbrella and the way she talks about asian men is downright racist. And I don't think Ella realizes it. Fetishising people based on their race is racist. White people in the US have become so used to only think of racism in the context of black and white people.
If you listen to what Ella is saying once more. Every time she says asian switch it out and put black in stead. The context of her discussion would become very awkward and wrong in most peoples ears very quickly.

I can't speak for EVERY love spell, but some of them aren't intended to take away free will but strengthen what's already there. So if X person already likes you, it'll amplify that so maybe they find you really pretty one day or want to ask you on a date, but if they have no feelings for you it'll do nothing.
