    Great tips and concise. I watched a similar video that was 18 minutes long. I learned the woman's kids' names, how long she had been sterilizing her soil, where she prefers to buy her potting mix, how wonderful her cat is, etc. Thank you again for appreciating that viewers' time is valuable :) Subscribed.

      That is One of my pet peeves. People who make videos and talk about everything else and it's just a waste of time. I love when they're concise, understandable, good camera angles and InFocus. Nothing beats it.

    I use 1/3rd soil from my garden, 1/3 compost from my compost heap, and 1/3 peatmoss. I saturate it (more than what is shown here) with boiling water. To be exact, I put 10L of boiling water into a 20L pail of dry mix. That makes a scorching hot soup. I then stir it up to make sure the hot water gets into all the mix, then put a lid on it and leave it till it cools. Then I put the pails in my garage with the lids off and leave it there until I need it. I make my mix in the fall, for use starting in December.

    I've purchased several large thrift store bowls to use for sterilizing my seed starting medium. Thanks for sharing your gardening knowledge, and all the great tips you've shared over the years. In the past, I've used the winter sowing method of starting my seeds. This year I'm going to start some indoors using your ideas. Thanks again! I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas.

    Ahh! Thanks! I thought my gnat problems were because I was using worm castings and compost in my starting mix. Didn’t know the eggs could be in the peat moss too. I’m going to hold off on those until later, but will definitely be using the boiling water now too! Oooof, I’ve had horrible gnats a couple of times and it’s a mess!

    You can also cook the starting mix in an oven for 30 or less at 200 deg F.

      Yes but not if your mix has a lot of perlite in it. You can release toxic fumes that will hurt the soil and yourself. Boiling water is the best way

    • @mrs.johnson7955
      @mrs.johnson7955 Před 3 lety +4

      @milkman Perlite is made from volcanic rock, which is heated and crushed until it explodes in order to transform the rock into small white pieces. It has medium water retention ratings and low nutrient retention ratings. It is added to soil mixes in order to improve the drainage capability of both soil-based and soilless potting mixes.
      I was confusing that with Vermiculite.
      I recently learned that Vermiculite, however, also does not leach like I thought and I was mistaken.
      Happy gardening

    Think of all the eggs that were not under the foil, were next to the edge, and otherwise did not get killed. A better top seal (plastic) would prevent that. Or better, a metal pot (16L with glass lid and 2L boiling water) or on hot plate for one hour, followed by one hour setting with lid on.

    I tried this and it seems to work in kiling the gnat eggs; only related issue is the potting mix stay really wet long time, and I am afraid if I put it outdoor to dry, other eggs or weedseeds will be barried in by wind.
    Moreover is impossible to sieve the mix when wet, so I started to first sieve, then sterilise the mix.

    I bought a bag of potting mix from Parkrose Hardware and I have had absolutely no problem. I was under the impression that if I was to use boiling water I would ruin the beneficial ingredients that was in this potting mix.
    also, why couldn't we bring our pot of boiling water outside and use this method with some of our soil from our outside soil that is doing nothing right now? if boiling water kills the gnats and the fungus then what's the difference of doing this method with our outside soil making sure that we do it outside?

    • @all-americaselectionsflowe6095
      @all-americaselectionsflowe6095  Před 4 lety +2

      So for starting mix indoors... There is no need for soil life. Goal is to germinate. Water soluble organic ferts will give them what they need. As you pot up soil biology becomes more important. Outside is too large. The spot you pour boiling water would cool too quickly to get deep and the life around it would replace it.
