Whiskey collector here. Difference between a $40 bottle and a $70-$100 bottle is STAGGERING, but beyond that the difference is negligible, people who tell you their favourite whiskey is a $500 bottle just want you to know they can afford a $500 bottle.
True, there's some really great budget friendly & flavored brands out there, that don't require going over (hell I'll enjoy Makers Mark & even Crown Royal), tho I will admit, Johnnie Walker Blue Label is amazing, personally...the price tag is high asf, but hits fast (roughly within a few minutes) & it is indeed smooth asf. Not recommending to buy it ofc (or if you do, get the sample box with the 750ml bottle size iirc, just to at least try it), certainly not an all the time thing...most definitely, even if you have the funds.
@infectious_d I bought one of those single serving bottles of Johnny Walker blue and it was damn fine, but as you say there are many reasonably priced whiskies out there. Wild Turkey is my everyday, and when I want to get "fancy" almost anything from Ardbeg, or I've really been into Suntory Ao lately. About $65 a bottle. I'll start with the "good" stuff then transition back to wild turkey when I've burned out my taste buds with a cigar.
I'm not a whisky collector, but I went Scotland and did a bunch of tasting tours. I came to comment exactly this. Of the ones I tasted, my favorites cost 1. $70 2. $80 3. $50 And I tried some pretty expensive (for me) ones too.
As a bartender and spirit enthusiasts, whoever put over 100 proof whiskeys is on some diabolical shit, it takes a very experienced palette to taste the flavors past the burn. You need a lot of exposure to high proof rise, bourbons, etc
@@ToastbackWhale It is high to someone who doesn't drink spirits on their own. Whenever I introduce people to sipping whiskey, I start at around 90, maybe mid-80's if it's got a little flavor like Michter's Sour Mash or Rye. If I can get them to pick up notes on the palate, I might jump up to 100 eventually, but usually that feels like a lot to them the first time. It took me a few months to build my palate up to barrel proofs and cask strengths. One of my favorite whiskeys in my current collection is a 138 proof JD SBBP Rye. No chance I could drink that without building myself up to it.
As someone who drinks a fair amount of bourbon, there is a huge difference in quality but there is also a point where it's just ridiculous due to allocation and rarity.
Agreed. Even 100 proof is a lot if you're not someone who enjoys neatly sipping on spirits. Odds are even 80 proof would burn. Starting them with a barrel proof, even if Michter's is pretty low due to low entry proof, is just blowing out their palates and making them feel burn vs flavor.

On the other hand, popular brands are just so popular that people are willing to spend tens and even hundreds of dollars more than MSRP.
