I played Tybalt in a Dutch production of Romeo and Juliet. I agree wholeheartedly with this analysis. My version added some details around his character
He is established to be an orphan living with his uncle, Lord Capulet, who dislikes him (perhaps because Tybalt is his financial heir) and who is a great friend of both the Nurse and Juliet, which explains why they mourn him so deeply later.
In our version, he was once engaged to Rosaline, before Romeo caught her attention and she joined a nunnery as a result. His hatred towards the Montagues sterns from that and the fact that he is very lonely. Romeo has a (mostly) loving household and close friends. Tybalt has henchmen and an uncle who greatly dislikes him.
He fights Mercutio, who disrespected the Nurse earlier and accidentally kills him. In our version, Tybalt flees the scene but ultimately returns (after Mercutio's monologue) to check if Mercutio can still be saved. The answer is of course no. Romeo then kills him and we clearly see Juliet mourning her dead cousin who was more like a brother to her.
All it took was some extra scenes with Tybalt, the Nurse and Juliet being together but I thought our director had a really nice insight in his character. I really liked the version of Tybalt I got to perform.
english lit exam tomorrow, this has helped so much thank you!! good luck everyone :)
As Tybalt acts on emotion, could you say that even as Romeo acts out of love (real or imagined), they are more similar than they realise, reflecting the foolishness of the feud as they criticise each other for the very things they do themselves?
Thank you!! Your videos are so helpful! Could you do a quick video explaining the types of language shakespeare uses and their effects please? Blason, blank verse, prose etc would be really helpful when aiming for 8/9
