Whitney changed the way the anthem was sung!! She didn’t over sing it but she had power. When she did this song it immediately came out as a single and the proceeds were donated to something ….I can’t remember. The song actually charted. I bought it! Her version started to become the standard. RIP Whitney.
The single actually went on the billboard charts twice. The first time it peaked at #20. Then it was re-released after 9/11 and peaked at #6. Originally the proceeds went to The American Red Cross Gulf Crisis Fund. After 9/11 re-releasing the proceeds went to the New York Firefighters 9/11 Disaster Relief Fund and New York Fraternal Order of the Police. Whitney is the only artist to have their rendition of The Star Spangled Banner on the billboard charts twice. I remember sitting there with my parents at the time (I was already a HUGE Whitney Houston fan) and we were all stunned. As soon as it ended we all went wild clapping and crying. As soon as the single was released, I bought it.
@@jobuck879 First time it was only her proceeds that went to charity. The record company kept their share. The 2nd time Whitney talked them into donating their shares as well. Whitney also gave the money she earned from The Welcome Home Heroes concert to charity.

and Whitney's version actually was a hit. The recording went multi platinum and in 2001, shortly after the 9/11 attacks, the song hit the Billboard top 10.

Fun fact, Whitney didn’t even rehearse this. She heard a recording of the orchestras arrangement minutes before and she got it. Musical genius

Sorry to disappoint, but she did infact rehearsed the performance. There is a photo of her at the stadium of her rehearsal prior to her legendary performance.
Whitney has legacy all over the place…but can you imagine being the greatest singer of ANY song that’s over 250 years old?? Absolute treasure.

This is one of greatest singing performances ever. This should become the official version of the US anthem IMO.
I am not an American I am from very far down in Zimbabwe but this performance of USA anthem by the Greatest vocalist to ever exist gave me goosebumps

She not only killed it, but the entire arrangement was changed. There is a video on CZcams on how they used a jazz composer to change the arrangement from the standard 3/4 to 4/4 time signature. There were also subtle cord changes as well that were designed to modernize the song and also fit with Whitney.
It *DID* become a literal hit at the time! Days after the Super Bowl, radio DJs started to get requests to hear the SSB it began to be played over and over again! It became such a radio hit that it was soon released on cassette tape and became a national hit :) I didn't catch her singing during the Super Bowl but afterwards, I was amazed by her rendition!
Only Whitney Houston could take the SSB and turn it into a pop hit! RIP Whitney

The Star Spangled Banner is normally performed in a 3/4 time. Whitney changed it to 4/4 time, which extended the notes and gave her more of a chance to, well, basically showcase her immense talent. It had never been done before and was a remarkable choice for one of the greatest singers in the world!

This was actually released as a single and was on the charts for what seemed like FOREVER! As all her other songs, this Star Spangled Banner became a hit and was my ringtone back in the day. I cry every time I hear it! The Voice...Love you Whitney

I had the honor of being Mrs Whitney Houston’s driver while filming Sparkle 2011/12. She was absolutely one of the most amazing people that I have ever met! She sang every morning on the way to set, and I would imagine that she was actually singing to me😂 Whatever! Either way I will never forget her compassion to her fans and her art! What a legend

She was such an amazing singer . I also like her live performance of the National Anthem she did on her "Welcome home heroes" those days where she sang the first part a capella.

I still get goosebumps every time I watch that video...This was during "Operation Desert Storm" and the security at the Super Bowl was elevated to the highest level ever at that time!!! Oh, by the way, the result of the game: the NY Giants defeated the Buffalo Bills by 1 point in one of the greatest Super Bowls ever played!!!

That was such a simpler time. There was a time in America when a black woman singing the Star Spangled Banner united all of us. She was a national icon. Something's happened since then.
