I've got a feeling that he got some skilled climbers with rope to perform this rescue.
It doesn't seem likely that a rescue helicopter would be able to perform a winch rescue so close to the bottom of this cliff or so close to the face. Hovering so close to the rock would be inherently dangerous, and probably cost a fortune anyway! Not many places have helicopter rescue services with such specialized capabilities either. Usually a medivac company will only land at safe, wide open LZ's. And only the National Guard or the coast guard does anything more advanced than that, I know that some climbing venues require that you buy your own insurance that covers the extreme costs associated with helicopter rescue. But that doesn't come close to offering specialized rescues of extreme athletes who put themselves in high risk situations like this! He makes it sound like he's ordering a pizza or something. I remember I had to call a medivac helo for my wife's mother on an island in the Puget Sound in Washington, and it cost $14,000 way back in '2003! And obviously that was with no winch rescue required. Although I suppose in our location the Coast guard would've responded if a winch was actually needed.
