I got a little tired of the perfect Z look out of all seven Z lenses I own. My 105mm f1.4 and 58mm f1.4 F lenses give a different style of shooting and I find it so much fun to use them. It gives a different character although the resolution is probably best for 24 megapixels and no cropping, you have to think about that before taking the picture. Making the frame perfect in camera.
Thanks for such an honest helpful follow up video, it really does aid us out here with our choices. I think as a working professional your head won over your heart on this one. You can always keep using your 28 and 105 1.4E lenses for that extra bit of creativity to keep the fun element.
From the 2 photos of the couples you put on the screen side by side (58mm left/50 1.2 right), the one on the 58mm looks so much prettier honestly. There's something magical about the color.
I owned an old Nikkor 50mm 1.8 - the pre-D lens. I used it on my Nikon D200 to shoot my sis-in-law's wedding many many years ago and those photos came out really well. I sold it when I switched to Fuji, but bought another copy when I bought a Nikon F100 film camera. Then the F100 broke, and I sold the lens again. And now I'm tempted to get another Nikon film camera and if I do then, well, I'll probably buy it for the third time! It's a simple, lightweight, sharp lens.
Yup, a 50 f/1 Noctilux. I loved the results I got with it, but the use was quite limited for me and it was much less practical than the 50 f/1.4 summilux I replaced it with. I lost a bit of depth of field, but it’s smaller, less focus throw (easier and faster to focus) and has its own charm. If I didn’t have a lot of money tied up in it, I would’ve kept it, but I can’t afford to keep a lens like that as a trophy piece :)
I want this 58mm f/1.4 SO bad! I just don’t want to pay the current asking price for it just yet. I’ve seen so many great things about this lens (including your initial review), but that’s a lot of money for a niche lens. I have the 85mm f/1.2 (my new favorite lens) and I could NEVER EVER think about selling it. I feel your pain bro!
Hi. I dont have your experience, but I think you made the right choice. The 58 is more portrait lens oriented, than an wedding lens. Having af issues with clients in low light, is certainly not a good thing. Really thank you for sharing your experience.
The thing I’m not quite convinced about the latest Z lenses (50mm 1.2 and 70-200mm in particular) is the look of the highlights or over-exposed areas. Somehow they feel too harsh. That’s why I’m not replacing my 70-200mm FL or 58mm 1.4 just yet, though would like to try the Zs for myself!
Part of me could become a hoarder, holding onto gear that sits on the shelf, but I have sold several "favorites" in the past couple of years as I've moved to the Z8 and Z9 with the wonderful Z lenses. Three lenses that I had a hard time parting with were the Sigma 40mm f1.4 Art, the Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art and the Zeiss Milvus 100mm f2 Macro. Great lenses, but they sat on the shelf and I decided to trade them for the Z8. I even had a couple of DX lenses that I loved (the Sigma 50-100mm f1.8 Art and the Nikon 18-300mm f3..5-6.3G ED VR) and held onto just in case I bought an APS-C camera, but they were traded in as well.
I have used 35,58,85 1.4G series and sold all of them to quit weddings and bought Nikon D700 for fun and I regret to sell 58mm 1.4g and 35mm 1.4G they both were unique and have different characteristic to them and D700 is another Legend which is my Fav Dslr so far even after having Z6 I did not liked the files as Dslr give. I hope you will not regret and enjoy Current Z mount but I still feel DSLR have different images than Z Mirrorless camera.
Yes they do, as a an event photographer I need the best responsive kit so most F mount lenses feel a bit redundant even though I prefer the look. I still use my 28 1.4e though. But that was one of the last great F mount ever made
Great ideas, thanks. I also have the 58/1.4G from my D850/Df days for the Z8/Z7ii. I don't own a 50/1.2, but am thinking about it a lot. The 58 is my only remaining F-Lens, so selling it would also mean selling the FTZ. And I don't use it on the Zfc, since I have a Viltrox 56/1.4 for it (as an 85/2.0 look-equivalent). I very seldomly use 50mm, the 85/1.2 now is my main go-to lens. I'm not thinking about getting a 50/1.8 - it might be incredibly sharp, but I think it lacks character vs. the 58/1.4. Maybe I should get myself a 50/1.2 loaner, and see, if I like its look + handling.
I would try the 50 1.2. It’s incredible quality but the 58 has a comparable final look. Though if you’re ok with the 85 handling I’m sure it’ll be fine for you. I just needed a more responsive lens which the 58 couldn’t supply
Will never sell my Nikkor 180mm f2,8 Ai-S ED Because it's good, sure, But also because it was about 3 months pay when I bought it. Who knows why I really keep it. That said, it's still very sharp and doing the full manual thing is a lot of fun.
The only lens I’ve kept hold of from yesteryear is the 300mm f4 D. Still occasionally use it on z system camera and works quite well, built like a tank and very sharp. Maybe soon it’ll become a rather large paperweight see how the funds go
@@russandloz usually see them around £300-£450 . I’ve tried the 400mm 4.5 which I did enjoy and would like at some stage but at the moment most of the stuff I do is up to 200mm , we’ll see
nearly sold my 28mm f1.4e and 70 200mm vr2 and 300mm f2.8 vr this week the trade in prices were very low thankfully, so changed my mind and I am now going to keep them and buy a dslr again and keep z6 11 for small walk about camera sounds mad but its the cheapest way forward for me
The f mount G series lenses have beautiful color rendering. Bright and colorful when compared to the sharp but slightly less colorful with more contrast Z mount. A lot of the F-mount lenses do have imperfections like chromatic aberrations. The 58 1.4 is one that has issues it’s slow but bright across the frame and the colors are magnificent and so artistic. It’s also smeary and slightly hazy at 1.4. Making it debatable for use at that f stop. I’m not selling mine for the odd moments of artistic contemplation.
There is no doubt that the 58 1.4G is the softest of those lenses as I mentioned in the comment in your original video. Some call this character and others just think it is inferior. In the end, as I had mentioned, I like this lens when shooting on the road - it travels in the bag much easier than the 50mm 1.2 S (even with the FTZ) and it is much lighter as well - but still gives the advantages of 1.4 over the 1.8 S 50 mm. Still the latter is a miraculous lens and I find uses for them all. That said, I understand your reasons to sell the 58 1.4 G and I think they make sense in the context of your use cases. I think you make a great point about lenses in general - there is nothing wrong with getting different lenses and experimenting - in fact, this is the only way to determine what really works and what does not for each or our respective styles and work flows :) -PD
At 6:03 - it's not even close in my opinion which of these images I prefer. It's like the 58mm 1.4G somehow has a pop-up book capability of dimensionality when separating the subject from the background. The 50mm looks completely lifeless to me. It's a beautiful image, don't get me wrong, but it's so flat and uninteresting to me. I love that when I look at the images from my 58 1.4G (and my 28 1.4E and 105 1.4E) the images look almost more... realistic? Inviting? I don't know what the word is. But whatever the word is, it's extremely important to me.
Yes I get what you are saying. It might be with the oval shaped bokeh and subject compression that leads towards the centre. But Modern glass loves perfectly round balls
I recently bought the 70-200mm f/2.8 Z lens and there is no point in selling my old 70-200mm f/2.8 G lens for the pittance I could get for it. The same with my old 14-24 f/4 DX lens. I will soon have a museum of old worthless lenses. I have held on to my 50mm f/1.4G and it will probably spend the rest of my life welded to my D750 because the files from that combination are just that good. The 180-600mm will resolve my remorse for selling my old 200-400 F lens. The guy who bought that lens said his copy broke and could no longer be repaired by Nikon, so selling the bigger lenses while you can may not be a bad idea. The VR and focus motors are time bombs in those things.
Maybe we shouldn’t think about the money to just move on 🤷♂️. I also have a over used 24-70 2.8. Too damaged for sale but still works. Again when will I use it lol
Some good comments down below. First, I'm an amateur photographer, so for me it's a combination of esthetics and practicality. The mirrorless bodies have made practicality a bit easier to deal with on some challenging glass. For me, (I've never owned the 58mm f1.4 - but I've heard about it), this battle is similar to the one I had in my head with the 200mm f2 VR. Not very practical, but I love the color rendering, smooth transitions of out of focus zones, and the dimensionality - which I don't get with my other glass. The images breathe. That's me, and my preferences today. The Z9/Z8 make using glass like this much easier and you don't suffer photographer or subject fatigue with shallow depth of field focus. Even as an amateur, for portraits, this is important. People love the images of themselves I show them with that lens, and I've heard (as I'm sure you have), "I hate taking photos, but the ones you took of me are lovely". I had one woman ask me if she could use them on her corporate website. Styles change and personal preferences are different. Clinical sharpness is what matters to some, character of a lens for others. I think your traveling the road of what you prefer is fair and far better than to always stay put just because. That said, I don't see my 200mm going anywhere except in my hands.
Some great points there, but yeah in a way I wish i kept it for recreational use, but needed to fund my z8, which is sensational. I'd love to have a go on a 200, maybe I should rent it
@@russandloz I researched a mirrorless camera for 4 years before pre-ordering the Z9 the moment it was available. I've not regretted it since (except for weight). The camera for stills is now on par with the Sony A1, and holds it's own with Canon R3/R5. Video aspects are better at the moment. Recently I took three cameras out and shot the Nikon 180mm f2.8 and Nikon 200mm f2 and Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 on the D700, D850, and Z9. A friend agreed to pose while I switched cameras and lenses. The results were only a bit surprising. AF shooting all lenses wide open was nailed nearly 100 percent on the Z9 (minus the 180mm f2.8 - which is D screw drive). The best looking images (and preferred by my model) were the 200mm f2, hands down. We tried to keep the poses the same for all shoots, but that wasn't always possible. The esthetics of the image were nicest on the D700 and Z9. The ease of positioning my subject and not worrying about AF location made the Z9 far easier to work with. The 200mm f2 is front heavy, with an awkward foot, and misplaced focus ring that is easy to bump. That said, I take it everywhere and love shooting it - for portraits, sports, action, and even some wildlife. I use the lens a lot, and have to say, if you can get past it's shortcomings, it's an amazing piece of glass.
I sold it once and won't make that mistake again 😅This time I'll keep my copy even though I'd normally use my Sony 50mm f1.2 GM (either on my Sony or adapted on my Nikon Zf via the Megadap ETZ21 Sony E to Nikon Z adapter). But the Nikon 58mm f1.4 G has a unique soft, romantic look that I sometimes want. The only other lens I know with that look is the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f1.2, but it doesn't have autofocus. So I definitively want to keep the Nikon 58mm f1.4 G for those special images where a "romantic look" is more important than sharpness.
The curse of G.A.S, going from d800e to z8 and trading in the f mount 24-70 & 70-200 for the lighter Tamron Z mount equivalents, for some reason I'm still hanging on to the 50 1.4 with the loose rubber on the focus ring and the hazey soft focus if there is any stray light..50 1.2 would be nice but I can't shake the feeling like that of the beater honda you had for years with dings and scratches you can't part with
The Nikon 50mm f1.4 AF-S was not a good lens. In my opnion the bokeh was awful. On the other hand the 58mm f1.4 AF-S is the best "50ish" Nikon F lens with autofocus. That means the "last 50" with great bokeh that you can also shoot film with. This is why I'll always keep it. For digital I'll mostly use my Sony Alpha 1 and A7rV cameras and lenses.
The 2.8S trinity of lenses are beautiful in every way. I would never recommend trading in as you'd lose so much money in doing so. The 180-600 carries on from the 70-200 range. Though it'll never be able to reach it's quality.
@@russandloz the 24-70 2.8 s is kinda the last lens I am slowly working towards. The 35 and 50 are my favorite lens but the 24-70 is the one and done lens I wouldn’t mind having as a more versatile tool for photography.
There should be no surprises here. After using Z mount S class lenses for a while it becomes harder to pick up an F-mount lens for preference. For shorter focal lengths (below 200) the F-mount lenses have noticeably lower image quality (except the 105 F1.4).
Nikon gives their users a hard time determining which the best len is. Clearly 50 f1.8 wins at its compact size but 1.8 is just not “good” for pro, however 1.2 is on the opposite side. 😂😂 I have to say SONY finds the balance between size and function. I know they have breathe issue but they control it by software inside camera. Nikon’s 1.2 is almost great but you sacrifice the size.
Just use a Sony to Nikon adapter and buy that F1.4. They work great. It's ridiculous that Nikon won't offer F1.4's or allow others to produce F1.4 primes for Z mount. I don't want to run around with a huge 35, 50 or 85 F1.2 lens on a full day wedding. But I need more separation than a F1.8 can offer. Nikon is ignoring that issue completely.
When switching to the Z system I sold my 35mm 1.4 G lens. I used that lens for creative work. Mostly getting ready shots at wedding. It had a good feeling. But I traded it in for the 35 mm S 1.8. And that lens is so small and light. Just has a different feeling, weight and vibe. So Yes kinda miss the G lens. Yes i understand when you say a lens can give you an artistic feeling. But still New generation Moving on with the Sharp S lenses and the awesome Z8.

Yes. Colours are better with f mount glass too. If it was faster focussing and actually 50mm I would have kept it

Yes I think it’s because z lenses are date I say too sharp, so you can’t get nice out of focus areas and edges seem busy

I finally got the 200-500 last year, great deal, loved it… only to sell it immediately upon announcement of the 180-600 😬😆🤷🏻♂️

I love my 28, only going to be replaced when they release a z mount version. I would recommend a light z lens then.

The 58 1.4 is an artistic lens, the 50 1.2 is a work horse.
Exactly. I hate carrying the 1.2. But it gets great results and can be arty too at 1.2. Just so wish it was lighter

I sold it once and won't make that mistake again 😅This time I'll keep my copy even though I'd normally use my Sony 50mm f1.2 GM (either on my Sony or adapted on my Nikon Zf via the Megadap ETZ21 Sony E to Nikon Z adapter). But the Nikon 58mm f1.4 G has a unique soft, romantic look that I sometimes want. The only other lens I know with that look is the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f1.2, but it doesn't have autofocus. So I definitively want to keep the Nikon 58mm f1.4 G for those special images where a "romantic look" is more important than sharpness.

It does have a look, but maybe not enough as much as I was hoping. It's also slower than the z mount for my work. I just didn't have a place for it
The curse of G.A.S, going from d800e to z8 and trading in the f mount 24-70 & 70-200 for the lighter Tamron Z mount equivalents, for some reason I'm still hanging on to the 50 1.4 with the loose rubber on the focus ring and the hazey soft focus if there is any stray light..50 1.2 would be nice but I can't shake the feeling like that of the beater honda you had for years with dings and scratches you can't part with
You've made some good choices there. I also had the 50 1.4 for a long time. I love my 50 1.2 for events but any other time its far too big.

The Nikon 50mm f1.4 AF-S was not a good lens. In my opnion the bokeh was awful. On the other hand the 58mm f1.4 AF-S is the best "50ish" Nikon F lens with autofocus. That means the "last 50" with great bokeh that you can also shoot film with. This is why I'll always keep it. For digital I'll mostly use my Sony Alpha 1 and A7rV cameras and lenses.

I have the 35 1.8s for travel. The 50 1.2 for portraits. The 70-200s for reach. I’m thinking about trading the 70-200 for the 180-600.
The 2.8S trinity of lenses are beautiful in every way. I would never recommend trading in as you'd lose so much money in doing so. The 180-600 carries on from the 70-200 range. Though it'll never be able to reach it's quality.
@@russandloz the 24-70 2.8 s is kinda the last lens I am slowly working towards. The 35 and 50 are my favorite lens but the 24-70 is the one and done lens I wouldn’t mind having as a more versatile tool for photography.

There should be no surprises here. After using Z mount S class lenses for a while it becomes harder to pick up an F-mount lens for preference. For shorter focal lengths (below 200) the F-mount lenses have noticeably lower image quality (except the 105 F1.4).
True to a certain extent, though I love my 28 1.4E, one of the newest, very sharp and fast.

Nikon gives their users a hard time determining which the best len is. Clearly 50 f1.8 wins at its compact size but 1.8 is just not “good” for pro, however 1.2 is on the opposite side. 😂😂 I have to say SONY finds the balance between size and function. I know they have breathe issue but they control it by software inside camera. Nikon’s 1.2 is almost great but you sacrifice the size.

Just use a Sony to Nikon adapter and buy that F1.4. They work great. It's ridiculous that Nikon won't offer F1.4's or allow others to produce F1.4 primes for Z mount. I don't want to run around with a huge 35, 50 or 85 F1.2 lens on a full day wedding. But I need more separation than a F1.8 can offer. Nikon is ignoring that issue completely.

When switching to the Z system I sold my 35mm 1.4 G lens. I used that lens for creative work. Mostly getting ready shots at wedding. It had a good feeling. But I traded it in for the 35 mm S 1.8. And that lens is so small and light. Just has a different feeling, weight and vibe. So Yes kinda miss the G lens. Yes i understand when you say a lens can give you an artistic feeling. But still New generation Moving on with the Sharp S lenses and the awesome Z8.
I never liked the 35 1.8s. I went for the 28 1.4 f mount. See our video to see 😊
