Penalty/OB should be played as lateral. That is a lot of local rules but agree make it across the board. Free relief from a divot that is clearly defined and agreed by playing partners is great.

If you hit the ball in the rough or over in the fall leaves and don’t have the luxury of a spotter like the tour pros, free drop (no penalty) to replace your ball where you and the group agree it landed but is either plugged, under leaves. Speed up play free drop and move on.

    • @StevelandCleamer

      @MonsterERB Před měsícem +5

Generally agree, but you have to be realistic. I've played with guys who used the "lost under the leaves" concept to turn a 215 yard drive into a 270 yard drive. If you're playing on your own I guess you just need to hold yourself to account, obviously if playing in a group you can ask them about where you think a fair spot to drop would be.

    • @TheRealMoonBear
      @TheRealMoonBear Před měsícem +5

Completely agree, if you’re turning 215 yard drives into 270 yard drives your score is meaningless imo.

@@MonsterERB that’s a very valid point. A buddy of mine was a real distance exaggerator. Don’t get me wrong, he could hit the ball a long way, but I remember he swore his ball carried this ravine that was like a 340 yard carry, I was like “my brother, you’re smoking crack”

I use to play in a club that had a seasonal leaf rule. It lead to people playing high risk shots blind, that they'd not normally try, knowing they could claim leaf rule for a lost ball. Playing sensible for position was then penalised.

my big rule change: create divisions for competition - ranging from 100% traditional to fully modern. so one tournament can ban all electronics, and even restrict equipment, while another can allow all the electronics and aids the organizers want to allow; or anywhere in between.

      Concept:
Masters- Lean traditional w/ electronic ban, more value in experienced, possibly give the caddie market a boost; Augusta already doesnt allow private recordings of the course, easy to adjust, plenty of history in the course to show how it evolved with the game and its practitioners
The Open- 100% traditional; speaks for itself being in the homeland of golf
US Open- 100% modern; plethora of courses of age, difficulty and infamy to test practitioners and push design and creativity to the edge( think like a profession greenkeepers revenge in a way); prime environment for brands and new ideas to promote product
Pga Champ- lean modern with equipment band; skills test of talent on the most difficult courses; would either establish common lofts or establish a range of lofts in categories such as “modern” “”semi-modern” or “traditional” and the yardage each club “should” get with x club head speed in no wind, mild wind, etc. Prime environment for the community to really see the difference between the average golfer and the pros and the bridge that can be built with the industry.

All lost balls should be under the same rule. Whether it's OB, water, lost in trees/hedges/shrubs/leaves, etc, Drop where it was last in play or where it is agreed by the players to have been when lost, drop a new ball and add a stroke.
Divots, especially on public courses can be a real problem and it should be legal to move the ball either left or right up to the width of the ball as a free move.

My friends and I play "Spectator Rule" when it comes to lost balls in places that are in bounds (and not in major trouble). Where everyone saw it go just off the fairway into the rough but it's nowhere to be seen, maybe its under a leaf, maybe it went into a gopher hole, who knows. If there were spectators and cameras they could point you right to it because you know it was definitely in bounds still. So we just drop a free ball in a place we all agree is approximately where we saw it end.

When it comes to lost balls it can be quite irritating when there's virtually no difference between a lost ball and one that 's almost lost - (you just got lucky and found it) but rules are in place to keep the game fair. However I disagree with some of the rules on taking relief, for example when Bob MacIntyre recently got a free drop from a sprinkler head which happened to be in the middle of thigh high rough, or when people remove their ball from behind a tree because there happened to be rabbit scrapings nearby. Doubtless everyone will disagree but I believe you should always play the ball as it lies - you put it there.

Where I grew up our local course was sparse grass, simply not enough water or money for huge maintenance - so local rule was anywhere on the fairway you had a clublength no closer to the hole to move your ball (regardless whether in a divot or not) so you had a chance of getting the ball onto some grass/weeds. I dont think it's unreasonable to have this implemented everywhere - if you want to keep it old-worldly strict for top-level events, then have at it.

    Stroke and distance rule:
Agree that a factual 2 penalty strokes from hitting OOB (especially on narrow courses) is quite a severe punishment.
if you hit a par 3 OOB you suddenly need a hole in 1 to make par.
    Divots:
If the ball is actually below fairway level (as in bridging a club over the ball without it touching is possible) you should get a free drop, but just a shallow divot that's 4 months old shouldn't give relief. if the ground is so muddy or there are wheeltracks, same test, bridge your club over the ball, if the ball is actually not touching the club you can drop it in 1 clublenght.
    Dropping/placing
In cases where you get a penalty stroke it should be place, in case of free drops it should remain drop.
Otherwise you have a better chance of a good lie by aiming for a shelterhouse and placing it next to it than to actually aim correctly.

I don’t know about hitting two off the tee is a good idea. It seems like it would save time. but the reality is, everyone hitting a slightly bad shot would be hitting a provisional, just in case. And then make no real attempt to look for their ball. But I absolutely agree about getting a free drop if you hit your ball into a divot, or any other imperfection in the fairway, for that matter. The fairway, just like the green, it’s supposed to be in relatively good condition. And that’s actually a rule that me and my friends play by. We allow each other to roll the ball. We play for lost balls that we drop 2 club lengths on fairway for 3 off the tee or from where it was lost or goes ob. But obviously not in competition. It’s no difference to hitting a good shot from the tee for second shot but because you have been penalised it’s only fair to be on fairway hitting forth. So why risk taking a provisional off the tee and possibly losing another ball or hitting into rough and wasting time for the group behind.
So I would be onboard for either rule to be an option take 2 off tee or drop on fairway near to where it was lost or went ob.

The Divot rule really needs to go.
The other rule that winds me up is the lost ball that's not OB and only lost because nobody saw it down and it's trickled 2 yards off the fairway and as a result you spend 3 minutes looking in the wrong place. You then drop, take the penalty and walk 10 yards and stumble across your original ball and that's just bad luck. That to me is a double penalty you've taken a drop further back from likely a worse lie and taken a penalty for the privillage of doing so. If your original ball is playable and you find it you should be able to renominate it as your ball in play and carry on without penalty. Lets face it in competition at tour level you have people running around with markers with the players name on there are no lost balls only difficult lies.

I think Guy was just getting a little TOO into his character 😂. Thoroughly enjoyable and couldn’t agree more with the content. If the grass surface has obviously been disturbed below the surrounding level then it counts as a divot. In other words, the soil has been exposed.🇦🇺👍

The stroke and distance rule is unfair. But it's the rules and tough breaks like that make golf like life (which is why we love it). My course is particularly punishing for any wayward shots. I work so hard to stay in play. But, as I'm get better I feel I've earned the scores! Having said all that however, it would speed the whole thing up being able to play 2 off the tee!

It should be a “spectator drop”.
Let say you hit a drive a couple yards in to some high grass. You can’t understand how you can’t find it and now you need to tee of again or you take a penalty drop. But, if there was spectators they would easily find it, as they do on the pga tour and so on. A spectator drop would let you drop the ball in the high grass where the ball landed without penalty.

Doesn't really affect us weekend golfers, but for tour players when they've putted and it's on the lip of the hole and clearly still moving, there really shouldn't be a time limit. If that ball is still moving and rolls in, that should count as the same putt.

The RA and USGA IMO have little regard for the everyday golfer. All pro sports evolve over the years such as replay challenges, pitch clocks, etc. Some pros play numbingly slow and the use of range finders could help speed up play in all aspects. The caddies are so good and figure the yardage out any way but it is slow process at times. What would it hurt. But the they won’t allow them and why? This goes for many aspects that could make good sense… And rolling back the golf balls for distance in the future, heck NO!

I think the 2 stroke penalty should stay if someone hits an obvious OB. As in, duck hooks it right into the OB area and is clearly lost.
Now, if you hit slightly off-line (or even down the middle; I’ve lost fairway balls on leaf covered courses) and it’s reasonable to assume it’s stayed in bounds, then a free “gallery drop” should be awarded.
The divot rule should apply if it’s an obvious divot and not a natural imperfection. If the ball is in a divot it should be one ball’s width left or right.

Can we please stop with the fairway divots. If we truly look at it how many shots does it cost the average player maybe 1 per 10 rounds like more than that. You can't have play stopped every time this happens play is already slow enough for some people that would just cause 5 hours rounds to be regular. I fully agree with 2 off the tee or drop near where the ball went into the hazard area. Armatures shouldn't be penalized because we don't have spotters or a gallery to find our balls in the long grass or just off the fairway.

Rather than removing the out of bounds penalty drop on the tee, would it not make more sense to just make all hazards lateral. That way if you hit out of bounds you have the choice to drop where it last went out and hit for 3 there or to hit from the tee again for 3.
