i still find it incredible how a NASA sponsored moon base simulator was programmed with such a robust text to speech program that is capable of being programmed with entire songs worth of tones and lyrics, even with instrumental aspects being substituted with acapella.
Do you think nasa might potentially use the robust text to speech program for long range communication between astronauts?
@@eageraurora879 probably not considering the fact that if you can transmit text to speech between suits you can also probably transmit traditional audio too. in space the system used for communication is pretty much the same system used to make phonecalls on earth.
@@an8thdimensionalbeing142 I mean, you would transmit the text which would then be played through the text to speech when it arrives, rather than just an audio file.
@@jebus4261 seems pretty redundant when you consider they are more or less the same process only one transfers audio data and the other only has to turn text into audio. they serve the same purpose and the system they currently use has a latency of only a few seconds anyway so communication isnt really impacted enough to justify making it all pre-programmed messages.

@@mattderogatory4068you can check it out online. The process is super cool, but basically it works because Moon Base Alpha's text to speech is incredibly specific, so you can select specific syllables to be played at what pitch for what time. Everytime I hear these songs, it's a reminder that the mars rover has a piezo speaker to sing itself happy birthday.
It's both melancholic and a little uplifting to think of a future where all of humanity is gone, save for our marvellous machines that made it all possible, singing in chorus our relics of creativity forever, into a void that does not care, and never will.
i'm not 100% on this but didn't someone program one of the rovers to say a heart felt goodbye before it shut down for the last time and not many people new they did it so when it finally did shut down it freaked the F out of those looking after it at the time?

The rover sent a status update about its battery being low and that there was no solar charging and a member of the staff made a poetic statement regarding it and it kinda exploded in popularity.
If we went extinct in the next few years, there will be robotic relics of our existence on our celestial neighbor’s surfaces, and floating through the interplanetary/stellar void.
Our dead rovers on mars will slowly be covered by Martian sand.
The apollo landing sites will remain on the moon for hundreds of millions of years. The American flag would be bleached, but the scientific instruments and the bottom of the lander will basically be there forever. There’s also bags of astronaut dookie, which could still harbor living bacteria.
The voyager probes will float through the interstellar void for a trillion years, outliving the earth. They hold the golden records, any civilization who manages to find the voyager will be shown humanity, earth, and our solar system. The voyagers will likely go through thousands of star systems on it’s trillion year journey… I think at least one of those systems may have intelligent life.

This takes me back, man. I first found out about Moonbase Alpha because of Boy's Life magazine, which I received while in Boy Scouts. I think I made my steam account just so I could play MBA. I very much enjoyed the TTS and I was pleased to discover several years later how much other people enjoyed the game.
Never will it fail to impress me just how much personality and feeling we as people can put into something no matter how minuscule. It was made by bits and chips and ended up being given a voice then soon a song then it was given the love and memories of hundreds.
THE WHIPLASH FROM GOING TO 25:31 TO 28:15 IS FUCKING INSANE BRO HOLY HELL
Despite the game being over a decade old, the iconic voice never seems to fade away, and I hope it stays that way.
BTW, Moonbase Oddity and Gary's Song absolutely stuns me. It's surreal how good this text-to-speech program is at being able to sing such songs with near perfection.
