Shoei delivers the all-new RF-1400, their successor to the iconic RF-1200. Major updates include lighter weight, a refined head shape that keeps the intermediate oval shape of the 1200, better ventilation, and a fully flat CWR-F2 faceshield with vortex generators. I bought a Shoei RF1400 in the summer of 2022. In October 2022, I was hit hard and fast from behind on I-44 between Springfield and Joplin Missouri. The car hit me so fast and so hard... it came right up through the tailpipe, bending the middle of the frame upwards, throwing me skyward and sideways off the highway. I don't know if I was rendered unconscious or not, it happened so fast. I found myself lying a few feet into the grass off the shoulder. My lower body was broken pretty bad (three months later, and I'm just now transitioning from a wheelchair to a walker), but somehow my head and shoulders were not injured! This helmet took a number of impacts, as it had damage in two or three locations (front and back). Somehow, God blessed me that this helmet protected me... I'm writing this review for Shoei and placing it in a number of popular online locations to show my thanks for the RF-1400!

Additionally, this helmet was super comfortable and fit my head snug as a bug in a rug!
(P.S. Don't ride your motorcycle on highways at night)

For those of you considering purchasing an RF1400, I have been using this helmet for a couple months now and am 100% happy with it. I'm a huge fan of Spurgeon and all his videos but I personally think he overstated the center button for the visor release a bit. I recall watching this video before my purchase and his comments made me pause a bit. The button works fine and keep in mind as he opens the visor in the video he isn't wearing the helmet. With the helmet on you can feel the button while wearing gloves and once you try it a couple times you get the idea of why Shoei designed it the way they did. I say try one on for yourself and form your own opinion if you are that worried about it. Everything about this helmet is top notch in quality and I find it very comfortable due to the nice liner materials. I can't say that I have worn as many different helmets as Spurgeon so maybe the old visor design was easier, hard to say. The air flow seems very good, we had a stretch of 95 degree weather with high Midwestern humidity and the helmet did just fine as long as I was moving no different than any other part of my body. I tried HJC helmets at my local dealer and they all felt a little overstuffed in the padding department in comparison to the Shoei which seems to be just about right. I have worn sunglasses with mine and they work just fine and stay in place. These were hard to find when I bought mine, RevZilla was out of stock so I had to source mine from another dealer. Very happy with my purchase overall.

Those are great points. These helmets are still hard to come by especially certain visors. I bought my first RF1400 in the summer of 2021 ( black with white American flag on it ) and the selection was minimal due to supply issues. I just purchased my second one yesterday as I finally found one in matt black in a large. Although the smoke visors and the transition visors are on back order. Myself after using HJC helmets which were good the RF1400 fits like a glove when I put in on. I highly recommend the RF1400 helmets
I was able to source a transitions visor a couple months ago so it is possible but they are in very high demand. I basically checked multiple sources on a regular basis until I found one that would take my order. Even then it took a while to show up at my door. The visor is great and very high quality. It's a bit pricey but I'm happy with it. Takes an already very nice helmet up a notch.
I don't know why whenever I click Revzilla for a review I always think i am going to see Anthony.

I’ve had icon , AGV , Sedici and now shoei. By far the best weather we’re talking quietness or airflow , and how comfortable. Won’t be changing out my shoei any time soon

I started off in the the RF-1100 and when I moved to the 1200, it was definitely a nice upgrade over it. It seems Shoei refined the helmet in bringing out the 1400 and I'll seriously consider giving it a shot when the weather warms up.
Just put my Sena SMH-10 on my RF-1400, even put the ear covers back in over the speakers (minus the foam which I cut off, but the 4 tabs stay on the fabric to hold it back in). You can separate the hard foam lining slightly away from the shell and slip the clamp in and the wires in. And the speaker boom hops under the chin curtain, just right. The clamp and unit gets near the shield but misses it. No extra ear pinching and I'm so happy. It has a lot of features, even a lever to snug up on the faceshield when the seal gets baggy. Oh and the air openings each have a midway detent (setting).
Used it for 90 miles of mixed 30 deg F GS riding and 25 more on a 250EXC on dirt snow slushy roads. It really seals out the cold and the pinlock, my first, is awesome. Did touch the slushy gravel road with my helmet and faceshield that rec'd many scratches, so I've ordered a new $70 clear shield, helmet faired better than the shield, me and the bike are fine. Had to hose off my riding gear. When I got gas or stopped to use my phone, I didn't even crack the visor as I had no fog, despite 30 deg. WOW, so much warmer and moister (a good thing) inside the helmet when its cold. You have to remind yourself that it is still very cold for the tire traction though. The center latch comes open when you touch the lift area with a little bump, no problem. When you close the visor just short of the click (latch) you have the slightest ventilation, nice. Push for the click and now its sealed, and with your chin down slightly with zero fairing its relatively draft free, lift your chin the the full time open rear exhaust lets come air waft through.

owned only Shoei since 1994. Got my RF-1400 dedicated last year. Love it, I just need a cheek reduction.
I was disappointed about the difficulty using a clamp-on comm system.
As a winter rider I've never wanted a closed rear vent, always good to get moist air out of a helmet
I should have returned this RF 1400 helmet to Revzilla. My last new helmet was a Shoei X-11 and I loved everything about it but it was more then long in tooth. At home I tried out the new RF 1400, though a touch heavier then the X-11 it is very well balanced and you don't feel that weight. The center lock mechanism was different but figured it would not be difficult to retrain myself and it was easy.
All seemed good...until my first ride. What I neglected to check out at purchase time was the detent positions of the visor. The first two detent positions do NOT hold in place and the visor easily falls down to the closed position. The 3rd detent position does "lock" in place but the shield is now more then an inch open so you get a blast of air instead of just slightly cracking open the visor. You'll notice also that there is no small lever on the side of the visor to slightly crack it open so you have to depend entirely on the detent positions and as mentioned you can NOT just slightly crack open the visor because it will not hold in place on the first two detents.
Also, as others have mentioned the mechanism to attach & remove the visor is one of the worst I've ever encountered, Shoei went completely backwards when designing that. Otherwise a great helmet but the visor issues ruin it for me.

How's the button visor release? It's the one thing holding me back from pulling the trigger on this helmet.
Another nitpick is that the front logo is too high , but I'd take it anyways, It's a Shoei.

After I got my MC endorsement I went in and asked "What's a good overall helmet? Not top of the line expensive but not cheap." The salesman immediately said the Shoei RF 1200. It was a bit pricey but after an hour of trying on helmets in the store I kept going back to it. It just fit perfectly and was so comfy. After it got stolen I went and bought...you guessed it, another RF 1200. I'm hope the 1400 truly does have better air flow as advertised (that was one of my complaints), is quieter, and retains the fit and comfort level. I'm a little skeptical about the visor lock mechanism. Looks fidgety.
I LOVE this helmet. My other helmet is an LS2 Valiant 2 Modular. It's a great helmet but the Shoei RF 1400 is a step above in quality, fit and less weight. The center face shield release/lock is an improved design in ease and giving symmetrical forces into both left and right hinges. The solid click when it latches is darn right sexy! Something I thought I might miss was the drop down shade that my LS2 Valiant 2 has. But, my Oakley Polarized sunglasses fit perfect with no additional pressure and are an advantage in 2 ways... 1) they cover my entire visual field, not leaving the lower 10-20% unshaded and 2) my sunglasses are much better optics that give me a clearer, undistorted tinted view compared to the drop down shade. Hands down... the Shoei RF 1400 is an amazing helmet with some nice upgrades!

Upgraded from a Scropinon 420, to a shoei 1400, and I love it!
I still prefer the 1200. All that is important too me seems better on the old model. Like room for coms, weight, no bulky airwents.
Yep seems like they just updated it cos they felt they had to. My only issues with mine is the small whistle when the visor is open and it hurts my ear after 4 or 5 hours but that's a personal issue.

you may have the wrong helmet shape, is your head oval, round or long oval, arai, makes some of each shape.. shoei is only ovals

@@Okami1995 An overly tight helmet is a special kind of ouch haha I went from a too large version, to a perfect fit, and it is snug but so nice. Glad you found something that works.

I understand the idea of an evolution vs revolution, however going up in weight and the other items they pointed out makes me glad I didn't wait for this new model and went with a lighter helmet from another brand. Maybe I will swing back to Shoei when the RF1500 rolls around
I believe the increased weight is because they needed more foam to meet the newer safety standards. Without changing the shell to carbon fibre (as shoei believe in AIM multi layer resin fibre) there is little else they can do.
This is a great helmet. And its my 1st helmet. I didn’t want to spend the money but i bought it was the only helmet that fit good when I tried them on. Im very happy with this helmet after 2 months of use in the warm and summer and rain. Its quiet and comfortable.
What color? Wondering if black gets too hot on those hot summer days. Or do the vents have you covered even in a black version?
@@unkle5009 i got black/orange and white. The vents help. But i also crack open the visor to the smallest opening, that really gets the air flow. There is no way to escape the heat in full face helmets on these hot days. But i rather be safe than sorry.

My wife and son love their RF1200. Those improvements to the 1400 seem to make a great helmet design even better. If you are looking for a great helmet (ask yourself how much your melon is worth to you), you can't go wrong with a Shoei. I have an Aria due to it fits me better, but I did start off with an RF 200 (?) nearly 30 years ago...lol...that was a nice helmet as well.

Almost bought one too. Kinda regret not getting it however since I just bought an AGV K6 a few months earlier I'll wait a little while and see about getting the RF1200 or the 1400.
These are excellent improvements. I like my RF-1200, and probably won't ever use a helmet without a full transitions shield. These all sound exactly like the little things I'd love to see improved on an already great helmet. The cheeks should keep the noise down a bit, too. I don't see the front button being an issue once you've had it a month, but who knows.
Does this have a transistions shield?? If not can you get one for it? How much?

That said, glad I didn’t wait for the 1400 this summer when I needed a new lid. I wound up with the Shoei RS as it’s the same as the RF1200 with slightly better ventilation and supposedly reduced noise. I saved myself $100 and don’t care about noise reduction since I ride with shield up anyway. Looks like the 1400 wouldn’t have been worth waiting for especially for those of us who don’t like that push button release.
I must've just got a good one, but I can say without question that the RF1400, at least the one I bought, is SIGNIFICANTLY quieter than my old RF1200. 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah we compared it on a few different bikes with a few different riders, but rarely try touching on noise levels tbh. It has so much to do with variables we can’t consider for every rider (bike title, aero, windscreen, seated position, rider height, rider arm length, neck length etc) all factor into individual noise levels. But we are glad it lessened for you! Definitely a solid helmet from Shoei.
Was waiting for this upgrade for the last 2 years. I love the RF1200/NXR. Seeing the improvements I am glad that I stopped waiting and bought a bell race star DRX. lighter, better vision and for me more comfortable.

I just bought one of these. I felt it was best helmet I was likely to possibly ever find available. Is it expensive? Yes I thought so but how expensive is your life? Not only that...these helmets look dope and when you own one you will notice how strongly built they are. Also look up the quality control these helmets go through. I heard anecdotally that 40% of their helmets are rejected by factory inspectors and the components are destroyed and recycled.

Love my nxr, (1200). Super cumfy and easy full day riding. Retired my neotec2 as it's just to heavy these days. Headaches, neck aches, turbulence. Will wait a couple years for the 1400 I reckon
for those that have tinnitus, ear plugs is a must. thus it does not matter whether the helmets are quiet or not
It's a must for everybody to avoid ever getting tinnitus. Tinnitus is sign of permanent damage to your hearing e.g. induced by frequent and prolonged wind noise.
A quieter helmet will make it even more quiet so of course it matters.
Even with earplugs, a loud helmet is a loud helmet.

Quietness isn't about subjectivity, if you have any indication of a tinnitus type ring in your ears after your ride then the helmet is not quiet. That's why I rock a Schuberth C3 Pro, I started with an HJC Rpha 10 and found after a few days of riding with it that my ears were ringing for 1-2 hours after each ride. The questions about noise aren't in the sense of asking how well a helmet does at preventing noise from entering the helmet but rather how well the helmet does at preventing that noise from damaging your hearing.
Did I miss the RF1300?? LOL 7 years of the RF1200... and this new helmet doesn't seem to be an upgrade.
Shoei skips the 13's because of all the superstitions about bad luck. They did the same from the X-12 to X-14.

My RF-1200 already squeezes the crap out of my fat cheeks but everything everywhere else it fits perfect. I'm not sure I would like the new 1400 with even tighter cheek pads. But I do really like the new design of the air vents All the complaints you listed about the 1200 series air vents are exactly what I've complained about.
Have you tried to use thinner cheek pads? All of shoei’s cheek pads and crowns fit in all size helmets. Just check what size the current ones are and order the thinner size.
Keep in mind that with most Shoei helmets you can get a thinner cheek pad as a replacement unit. Might be worth looking into if your helmet never broke in enough for your liking.

Coming from a Bell DLX MIPS this 1400 is a huge upgrade.
Y’all should see this gorgeous blue it comes on. I bought the black one bc my ninja 400 is green. Y’all, this helmet is the real deal. The aerodynamics are what sets this helmet apart, even more so in Texas. Mine is size large. Also, Military gets a discount but mine was $541 or so with tax. You have one brain and you get what you pay for. Don’t skim on your helmet. Do it right and ride safely y’all.

Helmet noise is for nitpicking., i personally dont mind it., because i want to hear my surrounding while i ride., but that front latch is a bit of a let down for me., but i still love it!!!
when speaking about helmet noise specifically what your talking about is the seal. so a good seal means less wind noise and there for you actually can hear clearer. This is the same reason that ear plugs do wonders when riding, at first your feel like your hear less but once your ok with them you can more clearly pick out the individual sounds and not hear the whooshing of the wind, which tends to be overwhelming

The RF1200 tried to crush my skull when I put it on. Couldn’t last 20 minutes. Arai Corsair X was butter to my brain!!! This 1400 is a good looking helmet though.
Sounds like you have a round head. Arai historically have made round helmets while shoei tends to make intermediate oval
Seems like the natural upgrade when the time comes from the 1100 in my closet and the 1200 on my head

Agreed! I don't like it, but, they're such a great helmet I'll end up getting used to it. Unless of course I pick up another 1200 before they're unavailable just for good measure.
Good review as always, and I enjoyed how you danced around the center latch :) I love my RF-1200, but this looks like a sidegrade, with a major design flaw for many of us that much prefer the side latch.
The center latch is the main reason why I haven’t bought this helmet. I just feel like I’m gonna hate that part.
@@edgarg6559 I am new to latching visors. I've rode motorcycles for 25 years now and never had a latching visor full face helmet until last summer. I have a Sedici and I love it. But I think it latches in the center. What's wrong with a center latch?

Love my RF-1200 helmets, but I look forward to trying the 1400. The shell sizing and extra protection are a definite plus, and the pricing seems more than fair.
Good review. I would think that the front chin spoiler would cause more wind noise than the 1200.

Absolutely going on my wish list. I am a fan of pin lock and chin curtain. Like the grey. I have a summer and winter helmet. My winter is a large in Black so I can wear thicker helmet liners. Hear in Southern California that Black helmet that looked so bad ass in January is murder in 100 degree summer heat. I have a medium light grey for summer. I could see this helmet for either but would have to try on with my Balaclava on. That's what makes buying certain items online tough. BTW I I am a fan of Revzilla.

Just ordered one in white, Shoei needs to hurry up and release the dam tinted visor already. But the helmet is comfy as hell. Coming from a Biltwell Lane Splitter.
Bought this helmet recently. Measured in to a Medium multiple times. When i finally received it I struggled so hard to put it on and take it off but while having it on it felt snug and comfortable. Really hoping it breaks in properly.

I'm having that issue. The measurements say my tiny skull is perfect for the XS. I just got it yesterday, and since it comes stock with the 39mm cheekpads, the pads damn near prevent me from being able to put my head in and it damn near rips my ears off. Once its on, everything feels comfortable and snug except for those cheek pads which feel like a vice grip being tightened. Would going to a 35mm or 31mm pad be the play here?

That's not what he said. He said 99% of the time, they would recommend this helmet to people calling in. Of those, it would fit well on approximately 80% of them.
I really wish Shoei offered a long oval fit. The only helmet I've had that actually fits me correctly is the Arai Signet X.
They used to do custom fittings in their Anaheim location. I was about to get one done then Covid happened. Not sure if they're doing that any more. I really need a helmet that doesn't give me a front hotspot. Even the Signet X does....
Yeah I'm in the same boat. I'd honestly pay double for a helmet that just fit me properly without some kind of tradeoff.
Riding in the cold, 20F or less, I find that I need to leave the back vent open on my RF1200. I find If I don't have a little ventilation going the shield will fog even with a pin lock. I also tell people who ride a lot to use ear plugs. I do like the improvement on the front center vent. The one negative I see is the button front visor lock. While sitting at a light in the really hot or really cold times I open my visor and then close it when traffic starts flowing again. I am going to have to try and RF1400 to see how bad the visor is to open with heavy gloves on. I am not ready to say this helmet is an improvement, it might be more of a lateral move.
No wonder I couldn’t find any comparison reviews of Z7/8 helmets in English, turned out it’s called RF-12/1400 in America 😅 Great review by the way!
Interesting...honest review, and I felt that there wasn’t that much change either.
I tried one on at Cyclegear and I fell in love, but they only have matte black at the moment, it's not even on their website it's so new. I'm waiting for a gloss white before I pull the trigger. Upgrading from a Bell MX9 ADV
Honestly the only thing I'd disagree with Spurg on is the change in the visor lifting mechanism. Having the RF1200 for 3 years now as my everyday helmet and track helmet I can say that starting about 9 months in I noticed issues with the detents on the left side. I've posited that this is due to the extra torque the visor experiences on the left side when opening and closing. This has also led to extra gapping between the visor and visor seal on the left side. Is it still my favorite helmet? Yes. Do I wish a specific design of this helmet hadn't let to this issues? Of course.
Also, to answer what may be an inevitable question, to address this issue after 9 months in I bought two more visors. A mirrored one, and a transition one. Essentially the cost of a moderately cheap helmet ($300 for both visors), but being able to swap these out every so often has prevented the detent and gapping issue I noticed with the stock visor.
Damn that center release and huge front opening just killed this being my go to motovlogging helmet.

The visor button is my only complaint with this helmet. Other than that with the fit and aero it feels great
Looking forward to trying one on. Glad to see them use a center locking shield & reduce wind noise. My rf1200 shield has never fit tight against the seal even after tightening because of the side locking shield.
The 1200 is bad about that and the exact reason Shoei changed design in the 1400. I guarantee you this helmet is more quiet than the 1200 with the new upgrades. I'm not going to take someone's word for it that says, helmet noise doesn't bother him and doesn't ride with the chin curtain installed.👍

It's very awkward to use in person. It doesn't feel intuitive at all. Also worth nothing the RF1400 isn't glasses friendly (no shoei's are imo), my glasses jiggle around and do not settle in the temple pads

I loved the RF-1100. I HATED the RF-1200. Don't know if I'm going to try to 1400.
To each their own . I love my RF-1200.
I know every bike is different and that noise is subjective, but I find this 1400 to be quite a bit noisier than the RF-SR. I like everything better about the RF-1400 except the wind noise is pretty ridiculous for a $600 lid.
I wish they had gone with a more aerodynamically efficient profile. Looks like I'll still be going with the Bell Race Star.

@@daddysenpai681 I do trackdays and classes on track. My Bell Star Carbon (about to reach its expiration date) does very well on my track bike and on my Bonneville T120 on 1500 mile trips. I'm sure the Bell Race Star will be even better.
I tested my wife's RF1200 on a 250 mile trip, and there was just slight buffeting and instability. So I've come to trust the aggressive aerodynamic style a little more.
@@nspinicelli makes sense, thays why I asked. I see a lot of people that just ride street that think they need the most aerodynamic and aggressive helmet out there. I've the the race star and personally don't like the way it fits on my head. Super sexy helmet though. For trqck and street im using the Arai corsair-x and im loving it. No buffering but a little on the louder side without the chin curtain. I use earplugs though so it doesn't make much of a difference to me.
@@daddysenpai681 Nice, yeah I've never tried Arai but I have no desire to leave Bell at the moment, especially if they produce ECE 22.06 spec helmets in 2021 (which they will).

The RF1200 has been one of the loudest road noise helmets for me. As for street bikes, the visibility points are terrible for head down posture for crotch rockets.
I've been a Shoei owner for a decade - RF1100s and 1200s. My #1 complaint is the US market graphics are garbage compared to the NXR (EU equivalen to RF1200). I've purchased quite a few from Chromeburner until recently, when Shoei brought the hammer down on US imports of NXRs to the US. I guess they don't want AWESOME graphics in the US? I'm currently riding with my NXR TALE TC-5, which I have never seen anywhere else on the road....... Here's to hoping the RF1400 design team has some good ideas for the upcoming years.
This is one of the few helmets to come in an XXS which fits me. But in Australia this helmet starts at $960 dollars, definately not affordable.
Just bought one 2 days ago, Peter Stevens triumph shop $900. Top notch brain bucket. If you have a $2 head, then wear a $2 helmet.
@@adrianzmajla4844 I ended up going with the x-15 in xs and upgrading the cheek pads. It wasn't that much more of a jump from the nxr2. They are on sale too atm.

Good review. You left out two things. One, the RF1400 face shield has less curvature top to bottom supposedly to reduce distortion. Also, the RF1400 shield is trickier to remove. I've ridden an RF1200 for five years and just purchased an RF1400 but haven't yet used it. I hate the front shield lock. I have no patience for complications getting my shield open. Also, my Sena bluetooth fits easier on the RF1200. I may return it, but the RF1200's in my size are getting harder to find.
This helmet is known as the Z-8 in Japan and NXR 2 in Europe and Australia
IS it EXACTLY the same helmet in the NXR 2 version? Did they need to make any changes to clear CE certification? They won't actually be selling them until August..

They will likely all be getting an update/ successor as the EU have updated the safety standards to ECE 22.06, and that's a huge market. It would sensible to assume they will all have to have similar features to help comply, such as the button to open the visor. But they also likely all have the same downsides such as increased weight as there needs to be more EPS for better protection (given that Shoei has invested in multi-layer poly/resin+fibre construction instead of carbon fibre).
In Europe the RF1400 is the NXR2 and due to Covid, lack of HGV drivers, and customs backlogs, it's only come out this week, with some colourways expected as late as March 2022! Therefore, I'd say we're at least 2/3 years away from actually having your hands on a GT-Air 3- especially as the GT-Air 2 is much newer than the NXR (RF-1200).
Also, the shoei GT air is probably better for touring as that's it's primary design audience. Therefore it has different features - more sound proofing, drop down sun visor and a ratchet strap instead of DD ring.
The only reason I didn't get the GT air is because some tracks only let you ride there with a D ring.

I went with the RPHA 70 ST in carbon. Similar price point, lighter, DD ring, and I liked that I could install a packtalk slim on it. That and it was actually in stock lol.

I love my RF1200. these are very minor changes which address some of the issue I have with the 1200 but I don't like the visor locking at the front, the 1200 was fine. And big chunky vents seem like a step backwards.
I would love to stay within the Rf line but I wish they implemented Rotational Impact or MIPS technology. Or at least offered a variant with it. In the times of Un-intrusive airbag systems, and more companies adopting Mips like technology, It feels like shoei Is happy to keep the bar the same instead of spending an additional $5 per helmet.

@@lurrdluffy Its a extra layer within the helmet foam that absorbs rotational forces when you go down. In layman's terms it dampens most of the forces that would otherwise cause your brain to pinball around your brain stem and skull. With major helmet manufacturers making $100's of dollars of return on a single helmet, I find it hard to justify them to not at least add a $10 liner that would help save lives. I've rode with mine for 4k miles. It's a great day time helmet, worthless at night if you ride an ADV or touring bike. This helmet fogs so severely due to the chin vents not allowing enough air in if you have a windscreen on your bike. I'd rate this thing outright dangerous at night at anything above 40% humidity. It's an expensive summer only helmet for me that doesn't breathe well and I've had to switch back to my AGV K3SV for fall, winter and spring riding. I'm not terribly happy with mine.

You wouldn't.... but having a click lock will ensure the tightest possible seal between the visor and the gasket liner. I'm not saying I agree with the philosophy, only that this was their target effect for putting in the feature
i cant imagine helmet harder to get on and off harder than rf1200. but when its on, its awesone. i never want to take it off during shorter stops.
you may have the wrong helmet shape, is your head oval, round or long oval, arai, makes some of each shape.. shoei is only ovals
Not overall a bad design but think that centered push to open will probably stop potienal buyers. I like my 1200 although my only pet peeve is the eye slot needs to be little bit wider like bell race star, but i use the shoei for in town riding, bell for twisties and eventually track.

Yes. Shoei designs their helmets specifically for the market they are to be sold in, so they change the name for each market to not cause confusion/wrong purchases. North America, Europe, and Asia all have their own names and versions of the helmet per local regulations.

@@morgan98801 My understanding is that the ROW helmets use a 'softer foam' for more absorption and better protection to brain impact to skull. The current (old) U.S. standards use a firmer foam (excuse is higher crash speeds) - but rumor says the U.S. is going to release a new updated standard that coincendeltly models the euro mindset. It wouldn't surprise me to see that happen and then Glamster show up here. OR- given enough sales overseas of the Glamster- Shoei could decide it was worth making a U.S. approved version...either way, the response from the RevZilla guy above seems to indicate he knows something...... :) I already have mine (and LOVE IT) so....

That center release looks like a deal breaker for me. What were they thinking? Glad they fixed the front vent. I’ve got 20k miles on my RF1200 and I still don’t know which way is open or closed unless I’m riding down the highway. I almost got another one, but upgraded to an X14. I’ll keep an eye out for the 1400, maybe I’ll upgrade to that when the time comes. I’m not as in love with my X14 as I was my 1200

noise is not subjective - it can be measured with a decibel meter. Anyone know if there are any comparisons of the RF1400 with the GT Air II in terms of actual noise testing? As of this writing, my google search turns up little info.
The subjective part isn't referring to measuring noise, it has more to do with the factors that are unique to you vs every other rider. Arm length, seated position, torso length, bike aerodynamics, windshield/no windshield, head angle, etc - those are all factors that contribute more to a helmet's interior noise levels than the designs / vents built into a helmet. That's why few helmets really talk about noise levels in their marketing, Schuberth does but if you read the fine print it says "on X bike at X speed in X wind tunnel" since it is not guaranteed for every use. Having said all that - wearing ear plugs with this helmet makes it as quiet as every other helmet all for the low cost of $5 for a pack of 50 at your local pharmacy. Plus, no damage to your hearing over time of riding. Win win.
@@patrickmchugh8039 I get all that but still noise is not a subjective quantity and measuring that quantity can allow different people to make an informed decision. A 97 or a 98 dB may be small enough for some but not others to care about; hence the subjective part is pushed to the consumer to decide while the actual data stands on its own.

@@revealingfacts4all I think Champion does a great job of highlighting their list of noise levels for helmets they sell, but personally I feel as though if those aren't the numbers, or even the order of noise level, that I would experience on my bike while riding - then the data isn't very useful. If my aero/factors make X helmet louder than Y helmet even though their list had it the other way around - it's useless. Having the data is cool for those that want it, and I encourage you to go get it or Champion to keep going for it, but real world application as a rider just isn't there for me. Especially when ear plugs nullifies most of the concerns and adds longevity to hearing while riding. I'd take a $5 fix over data for data-sake. Again, all for you wanting the data (I get that) but other variables factor in too much for me personally. Have a good one!
