@YaSmithe , I agree. Stanley Kubrick was a visionary, but that often comes with social issues. Shelly was a trouper and she contributed greatly to the masterpiece.
Wait people didn’t like her in the film?! She did an amazing job she basically was the film. Her performance made us feel all the fear her character felt
Back in the day i watched that movie first time, i feel like Shelley’s performance and facial expressions not doing well like always opening wide open mouth and sounds desperately and after that first impression of her character it still feel the same after how many times i watch it. Even Stephen King didnt like her performance. But i did lot of researchs and director insult on her and the whole year of hell shooting day i respect her and i even watched her other performances and interviews. Now i look back and watch some clip of shining i do feel like her performance and effort hit the right spot on a movie. So i was in both side so might people didnt know the fact that how much stress and energy she put into this film at the end😅
I love her. I think she played a very intense part in the movie and I think she was perfect for the role. She didn’t just pull it off, she mastered it.
Kubrick pounded on her CONSTANTLY throughout the filming, relentlessly criticizing and harping on everything she did, just to get her emotionally broken. It worked
@@user-zb9lv3gh8s I know. She gave the world the ultimate sacrifice of her sanity and well being. Not only do I believe she deserved far more respect than she got but she deserved everything good in this world and I hope she's found peace and rest on the other side.
Angelica Huston says Duvall's performance is the core of the film, is what makes it work. Because Jack is in and out of his character, at times. But she stays 100 percent in character. and she's the audience's perspective character.
I love Shelley Duvall, and I rooted for Wendy the entire film. She was a good mother and wife, and in the end did what she could to protect herself and her baby. Kubrick was a monster to poor Shelley.
Shelly represents all the fearing in the story. Think about how scary the movie would be if Jack was running around the hotel by himself.. even if it was just him and Danny. Wendy is what makes us feel the danger.
I loved Shelly in this film. I was so sad to hear about how hard filming was for her and the backlash she received about her performance. That must have been really difficult for her to go through.☹️
I love Shelley Duvall the actor and the character because she just seemed like a sweet loving person😢 and everybody on that set except Jack Nicholson treated her like crap
it's fairly recent and only on the internet that I got to know that anyone even hates Her, from what I know and have talked to anyone I know has seen the movie everyone likes her
R.I.P dear shelley, you played amazingly! Great actress but most of all is how you really were. Amazing loving person. You loved animals and you were so kind , real! Intelligent! Miss you ❤
I never heard of anyone not liking her performance before! She so wonderful. She captures moments of such terror, confusion and exhaustion and yes, some of that might be the authentic treatment of her by Kubrick, but there is no doubt in my mind she is a great actress and her performance really pulls us through The Shining
She was amazing and she was tormented and bullied by Stanley Kubrick during filming hate to say in order to get the performance that he needed from her, it's the way he treated all actors in order to get the most believable performance
Just watched an interview with Shelly from sometime towards the end of her life and she had nothing but nice things to say about Stanley. Literally said she loved him. Zero resentment about anything. Doesn't sound like she felt bullied
The amount she had to go through for this film, they all went through a lot but especially Shelley, she was literally ill during filming because of how much she was pushed so in my head even if you don’t like her you should be able to respect how she works, she was an amazing beautiful woman, rip Shelley Duvall ❤
Rip shelley!!!!! People did her wrong even behind these scenes!!!!! She was strong we can learn from her as well and all good people never take kindness for weakness!!!!!
Her acting in The Shining was excellent. The director was cruel so cruel to her. Shame on the director. RIP DEAR SHELLY ❤❤❤❤ EDIT Shelly made the movie. It wouldn't be fantastic movie without her. Mic Drop
44 years to be exact! But I agree, her character and role has probably been one of the most analyzed and talked about in cinema history! So, she must have done something right. RIP Ms. Duvall, you are still one of my favorites.
She done excellent in this. She looked truly terrified and her crying was top notch. Sad how she was treated during this movie and being nominated for worst actress. She done an amazing job
I did like the mini series better with the mother being a blonde it was super effective!!!!! I didn't hate Shelley's character at all I actually fell in love woth her character!!!! She was meak and generous cannot deny her character had the most interesting look grows on you!!!!!!
Shelly is an excellent actress but I think the character was betrayed wrong due to the director. The character in the book was supposed to be stronger but despite that I love the movie and watched doctor sleep . I'm obviously a huge S. King fan. 😊
Shelley is an actor, not the character in the movie. The movie depicts only part of the character's life and story --- not her whole life and story. Wow, this is genius, OP. How'd you come up with this?
She performed her part well, there’s no doubt about that. My personal problem was Stanley Kubrick’s portrayal of Wendy in the movie. In the book she’s smart, cunning, and overall just a very versatile character where in the movie she’s reduced to a shrieking scatterbrain. I know that was one of kings biggest problems with the movie as well. Shelly was just the victim of hate because she was the one physically acting out the role she was given.
I think she was great in the role of a wife that tries to give her best to both son and husband in a context where the man she married and had a child with is an alcooholic with a violent behaviour towards her and his very young son and of course a 4 year old that is basically a weird kid. She represents every women who happen to be stuck in a toxic relationship for the sake of their child who is already disturbed by the lack of stability. She tries to be patient and comprehensive but it is quite obvious that she is exausted and losing track of everything. She is also someone that is way too kind to others and is able to cope with people pretty much disrespecting her. She is in a pilot auto mode and has one goal : protect Danny at all cost. And finally, she plays a random woman. Someone that no one ever notices, someone that doesn't want to be a burden, disturb, that does everything like it should be done and put others first. No ambition, no goal, no confidence, no vanity : just a kind, honest and shy woman that is going through hell because of her husband's disease and mental health that led to big money issues. You don't notice those women in real life. The fact that people hated her for this role says a lot about how we treat victims in general. What would you have done in this situation ? Probably less.
Steven king didn't like how kubrick portrayed her. He said the women in his stories are strong and meaningful characters. Kubrick made her out to be a screaming banshee
I understand the character, or at least why Shelly portrayed her, which in fact she had to be given direction to go further in the final portrayal, but just as a personal stand point the character drove me nuts, however just exactly how would we react, stuck out in the middle of nowhere with another person who is bigger and stronger than us, that wants to kill us with no hope of bringing them back to reality, remember for better or worse this is her husband that she loves.
This is what I have been saying. I agree with Stephen King, this character is not a very well written character compared to the way she is written in the novel, but Ms. Duvall’s performance of this character is incredible!
To all of you saying that Shelley’s performance was over the top or exaggerated, YOU try months of torture from Stanley Kubrick, threatened with being blacklisted if you left, and then try to be a normal person. If Shelley’d worked under healthier, and NON-TRAUMATIC circumstances, maybe her acting would’ve been different. Like, do you guys honestly think that you would’ve done any better in her shoes? Taken Stanley’s abuse in stride and not at all worry about losing your career if you walked off set? Willingly done the baseball bat scene 127 times even if your body and mind were two seconds away from shutting down? Shelley’s sanity was holding on by a hope and a prayer by the end of shooting, and for what? To get the Razzie for Worst Actress (which thankfully was rescinded in 2022)? Girl didn’t take a 20 year break from Hollywood for nothing, she did it bc her mental health was crumbling while many did (and clearly still do) see her as Public Enemy #1.
I liked Shelly's performance in "The Shining". She is convincing as a fearful wife and protective mother.
She was abused for a year by the director to make the acting come out this way unfortunately
@YaSmithe , I agree. Stanley Kubrick was a visionary, but that often comes with social issues. Shelly was a trouper and she contributed greatly to the masterpiece.
She actually played in the Shining very great and wonderful. She will always be the best actress in the Shining, also RIP Shelly Duvall. 💔😢
Wait people didn’t like her in the film?! She did an amazing job she basically was the film. Her performance made us feel all the fear her character felt

Hard to believe people thought that way of a masterful performance. Just like her Olive Oyl character, she was born for that role! RIP wonderful lady!
Incredible actress.
I love her. I think she played a very intense part in the movie and I think she was perfect for the role. She didn’t just pull it off, she mastered it.
Shelly is beautiful and she had to put up with a lot I enjoyed her performance
She’s the only sane person in the movie and thus our only reference point.
Shelley did a great job on this movie. 👏
❤ Shelley Duvall! Her performance is absolutely perfect in this film.
I wonder how she didn’t get a supporting actress oscar
She wasn't running with the right crowd. That's usually how it works. Plus at that time (1980), horror movies never got consideration for any Oscar.
Duvall did a fabulous job.
Shelly’s performance was great in “The Shining”.
The way she performed the character. I always thought it was unbelievable.
Angelica Huston says Duvall's performance is the core of the film, is what makes it work. Because Jack is in and out of his character, at times. But she stays 100 percent in character. and she's the audience's perspective character.

Shelly did AMAZING in this film!!!
It would not be the same movie without her she is exceptional in the role.
Shelly represents all the fearing in the story. Think about how scary the movie would be if Jack was running around the hotel by himself.. even if it was just him and Danny. Wendy is what makes us feel the danger.
No one but Shelly could pull that role off with Jack. I love that movie ❤
I loved her performance all the way around!!
Shelly was the best in this film

I loved Shelly in this film. I was so sad to hear about how hard filming was for her and the backlash she received about her performance. That must have been really difficult for her to go through.☹️

Shelley 🎉was absolutely brilliant in ONE of MY all time favourite movies
Same!
Maybe the most overrated movie ever.
it's fairly recent and only on the internet that I got to know that anyone even hates Her, from what I know and have talked to anyone I know has seen the movie everyone likes her
I didn’t but I love her as a person just not playing this character
R.I.P dear shelley, you played amazingly! Great actress but most of all is how you really were. Amazing loving person. You loved animals and you were so kind , real! Intelligent! Miss you ❤
I think she did a great job!!
Love Shelly and Wendy 😀👌🏼🥰

I think the character was written very well and she absolutely killed it
Shelley's character in the shining was amazing. She went to great lengths to protect herself and her son

Well it’s been 42 years and we are still talking about her performance. What more could you ask for..
44 years to be exact! But I agree, her character and role has probably been one of the most analyzed and talked about in cinema history! So, she must have done something right. RIP Ms. Duvall, you are still one of my favorites.
I like how she was in movie. she was very good in the movie
I’m sorry this film is gold. It is a masterpiece. Shelly nailed it. It wouldn’t be a classic if she didn’t.
Shelley Duvall definitely played the role of Wendy great😊
She done excellent in this. She looked truly terrified and her crying was top notch. Sad how she was treated during this movie and being nominated for worst actress. She done an amazing job
She was only 22 at the time 😢❤ RIP

RIP Shelley Duvall.
IMO, she did great in this movie for what Kubrick had intended, not necessarily for everyone else’s individual preferences.
Also I guess Kubrick was strict with his direction. I think she did the character brilliantly.
Shelly is an excellent actress but I think the character was betrayed wrong due to the director. The character in the book was supposed to be stronger but despite that I love the movie and watched doctor sleep . I'm obviously a huge S. King fan. 😊
she is so pretty
I love all of it.❤❤❤❤❤❤

I. Love. Her. !!
