I remember in the 80s, my niece was crazy about her music. Then as I started watching her music videos I could see why my niece was fond of her. Anita was always like polished perfection, in her video's, and the love songs she sang, was almost like she wrote the book on love. She had such deep feelings.

People aren't used to hearing the human voice with its natural imperfections because every song recorded in the last 20 years has been auto tuned to microscopic perfection or it's ran through that hideous vocoder robot voice effect. Ironically, it's Big Music that's ruined music. Soon, the music industry will use AI to write hits based on algorithms gathered from internet and social media habits but only those of the lowest common denominator of course. Something with a good beat to twerk to while chugging Red Bull.

This was not horrible. She sang the song straight without runs and several ad libs. I think she did a good job.

Anita Baker turned 65 just a few days ago and can still sing and give full tour performances. Imagine how difficult of a task it is to be singing professionally for 40+ years and still be able to deliver a vocal performance. In her case, this is not even a matter of performance, it is probably more about the fact that NFC organizers recognized what a legend she is and called her out of respect first and foremost. So, when you bash her singing, and she is singing outside on a cold and windy weather, keep in mind that you are bashing the very singing that influenced generations of artists such as Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Mary J. Blige, Ledisi and tons of others. You’re dismissed. Thanks and bye.

I've Been Listening To & Loving Anita Baker's Voice For 40 Years, Her Voice Still Gives Me Goosebumps!
The media sure knows how to light a fire under a wet tree. First the woman is 65 and just last year was said to stop performing because of her age and her voice not being what it once was. The rendition was certainly no Whitney Houston performance but it was acceptable. Lets all try and be nice and just move on. She sang it the best she could that is all you can ask of anyone.
1. My mom is 65, NOT a person who made a career out of singing, and she sounds WAY better than Anita did today!!!
2. If she was given advice to stop performing, she should have heeded it.
3. Truth is truth. She did not do very well at all, just based on fundamentals of singing (and music in general). Her tone was all over the place, as was her pitch. Her timing was off. Her glissandos were off in timing, pitch, tone, you name it. She sounded like she hadn’t practiced even once, despite being a professional singer who made a career doing this. Nothing about her performance today was anywhere close to being in the realm of “good” or “acceptable.”
4. Tiptoeing around feelings and telling people they did a good job when they clearly didn’t is not “nice.” It’s fake; it’s coddling; it’s lying; and it doesn’t benefit anyone in any meaningful or substantive way. It just helps people stay stuck and immobile, so they don’t grow or improve.
Right ! She is older and I feel like it was cold & it sounds like her. I don’t think she ever had a high pitch voice anyway 😏 sounds good to me 👍🏽

It’s not age she has a great voice! It’s just some singers are belters and some are softer voiced vocalists. She sang basketball game years back and not so greatly but she is very talented. Her old hits are very velvety 😊

As a person who has sung the National Anthem at many events, over the years, you can practice a million times and know the lyrics forward and backwards but being at a live event and on TV no less, is nerve wrecking to the point that your mind blanks out and inside you are freaking out. I think she did good. In bigger stadiums like that, it's difficult to hear yourself and it's especially worse when they have a 2 second delay (which in this case I don't think they did) I was given ear plugs on multiple occasions to drown everyone out. It helps some.
That’s all well and good, but this isn’t her first rodeo. She’s done televised shows, live shows, major events, she made an entire career of singing for huge crowds, both in person and on tv. This was not good. She’s great, but today she was not.
Also, I’ve sung the national anthem as well. On tv. Nationally televised Colorado Rockies game. So what? What does your nerves have to do with Anita’s performance today? What does my LACK of nerves have to do with Anita’s performance today? I’ll tell you: they both have absolutely nothing to do with Anita’s performance, today or any other day. Regardless of the reasons, her performance today was not good, from a technical standpoint (judging only the fundamentals). And I doubt very strongly that she would disagree with that if she listens to the recording herself.
Lyrics???? How about 1/2 the song being the wrong notes and her awful attempts at trying to find the right note by doing unnecessary runs.

I've sung it the national anthem in different venues and you are so right! It's one of the most difficult songs to sing in any venue but it's even harder in a very large stadium with the echo delay and having to sing it in the very early am! Yikes!

Her performance seemed like an after thought by the organisers. Singing acappela, Its such a tough gig. Brave for any singer. My favourite will always be Jennifer hudson, but i think the musical accompaniment really anchored her. Anita is a professional and very technical singer. When she performs she controls the audio by communicating with the sound engineer. She could not communicate or control the weather.

I have a buddy from Iowa that said he used to sing this song at his HS football games when my wife and I invited him to go to Karaoke while we were in Japan, and my wife and I were like, okay…thinking he would be alright; I have yet to hear it sing better, and that was in the van on the way to Karaoke, and just to hear it through a mic, he did it in the Karaoke bar and it was even better.
The problem is people try to recreate the song and do it their way, with some added twang or soul, and it ruins the song. That was her first mistake, was adding her own style to it.

I read on twitter that they asked her at the last minute so she probably didn't have much time if any to practice. Nonetheless, I enjoyed her. 🤩

Weather, age, traveling, not feeling well and a lot of things affects a person's voice. And she's an Alto still able to flow into Soprano at her age ( because Mariah is younger than her and can't hit the notes like she use to), I still think it was a great performance. She's human and humans are not perfect. She still sounds better than a lot of other Artists.

I've heard her crisp voice in live performances and this is probably cold air, and that ear piece at play. Sometimes vocal cords just don't cooperate and that is what reminds us that no matter how eloquent or refined we are still human......yep
