- Dr. Cornel West is a democratic intellectual. He's Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard University and holds the title of Professor Emeritus at Princeton.
Dr. West has written 20 books and edited 13. He's best known for his classics, "Race Matters" and "Democracy Matters", and for his memoir, "Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud". His most recent book, "Black Prophetic Fire", takes a look at nineteenth and twentieth-century African American leaders and their legacies.
On Friday, Dr. West sat down with Roland Martin for a wide ranging hour-long interview in which they discussed the impact of George Floyd's death, the United States being in the midst of the third reconstruction, American decline, the argument for reparations and what it should look like, Min. Louis Farrakhan, Tavis Smiley and former President, Barack Obama.

I will never forget meeting Dr. West at MICA in Baltimore. He was standing on a stage and I was on the floor. He literally got on his knees to give me a hug to thank me for attending his talk. I was so humbled.
Mr West stood at the hotel I work at. It was Essence Fest here In New Orleans. We pass each other in the hallway. I didn't know his name at that time. I said good morning Professor. He smiled and said good morning.
He's the essence of teaching us all and I mean ALL being a good human being.

Dr Cornell West is someone I can listen to anytime. Anywhere. He is so sincere, honest and loving and a man of God. To be honest I came here to low-key troll Roland Martin but as I listened I could not find one thing I disagreed with here. This is by far one of his best shows.
The highlight for me was Cornell West standing 10 toes down on his views about Obama's presidency. No one is beyond reproach and should be held accountable for their actions or lack of action. Especially those in position of leadership.
I also appreciated their discussion on the need of Black owned media outlets.

He saved the economy which trump took credit for and started the releasing of low level crime offenders who had been in jail for years and more. He made mistakes, but what president hasn't? He must of been halfway decent cause this president wants to take credit for the good he did and blame all the bad on him as well as undo anything he implemented whether it made sense or not! He said he was the president of all the United States not just black people. And it's hard to do anything specifically for black people while you are trying to keep the country out of a depression! I don't want to hear about the alphabet community! He also helped with student loan forgiveness and with trying to keep people in their houses with home mortgage refinancing for those who were upside down with their home mortgages. He tried to do other things as well, but we were looking for "Super Shaft President," who stayed having to fight being ridiculed and having his wife called monkey and other things that were said that were racist and just plain disrespectful! You need to go back and take a look at what was going on during those eight years my sister! Black people must not remember how Obama was treated by Congress and the disrespect he was given!. Why are we so forgetful? Why don't we know how politics work? They even tried to say that Obama was going against the constitution when he tried to get things done. The Republicans wanted him impeached when he pushed through healthcare or better known as the Obama Care Act that some states would not adopt and those states have high medical costs and a lot of uninsured people! I knew as a black president he was going to catch hell, cause he was black and everybody was expecting, once again "Super Shaft President," which even I knew he wasn't going to be able to be or live up to! So let's just say don't be expecting too much from ANY president! Your local politics is REALLY what you should be focused on, cause that is what really has a DIRECT impact. What happens in Washington affects us a little later down the line if it gets through CONGRESS.

It's a long standing battle that is rooted to their personal history at Harvard. The other issue lies in the fact Barack's main constituency were White voters, but he used Black people's emotions to get into the White House. Cornell West and Tavis Smiley have their issues with Obama that lie in Obama's lack of ties to the African American experience. Outside of marrying Michelle, which gave him the credibility with black people he lacked, Obama has always lived a Caucasian life and is now passing as a brother when he is a Kenyan from Hawaiii. This is just my own observations of the situation.

I’ve been hearing Minister Farrakhan since back in the early 70’s while in JHS, growing up in NYC. What I admire about the man is not his beliefs, but his consistency. In my worldview, character is not dependent so much on what a man believes but on what MLK would call the “content of a man’s character”. And that I believe Minister Farrakhan’s has a lot of. So does Mr. West. Men of character are consistent in their judgment, whether it be about black or a white person. In Minster Farrakhan’s world view what is wrong in a white person is also wrong in a black person. He doesn’t judge democrats and republicans using different standards. He will call out a republican for the wicked things he believes the republican has done wrong but he will also call out democrats… Let’s not forget “Hillary is a wicked woman”. Unlike Roland that you never know what will come out of his mouth. He may one day criticize a white republican for about anything under the sun, but a week later when a black democrat does or says exactly the same thing he will rationalize it as good or of no importance, and of course his most often response is to not even mention it at all. The reason Minister Farrakhan in my opinion is so maligned in media is because he has a message of empowerment for blacks not of victimhood, or of “you can’t do anything unless the white man gives you this or that or does this or that for you”. The white democrats will do anything to prevent blacks from believing they could do anything for themselves without their help and intervention. Imagine how far blacks could go and the great things they could achieve (like Minister Farrakhan believes they can) if they got all their doctors, lawyers, business people, scientists, athletes, millionaires, money and talent and got together to do something for themselves without the help of the white democrats or white people in general… Maybe one day people like Roland, Maxine, Sharpton, Dyson and on and on will get out of their way with their victimhood message of dependence on white democrats.

I have the utmost respect and love for Brother Cornel West, and to see Roland Martin conversing with him as a contemporary, exchanging ideas, and melding their consciousness across the board addressing the issues of reparations, and reconstructionism as it has to be, should be now, and how in the future it needs to become to alter reality in the black community for the better.
It is refreshing to see the way these great minds work, pulling knowledge from the past, meshing it with the knowledge of today, and formulating a vision of a better day, where black Americans can operate on an equal playing field in this country, You don't know how many interviews I have seen where the host has just sat in silent awe of the mighty stream of intellect, and consciousness that Brother Cornel projects... yet Roland got in there as they say in the hood, "Got Knee Deep" in the conversation, and Dr West received as much intellectually as he gave here today.
You both have forged a masterwork, dare I say a MASTERCLASS of how to tackle a problem, and what needs to be done to formulate the solution / solutions to make lasting corrections in a modular way....
