- My 1995 Citroen XM 2.1 turbo diesel SX given the HubNut road test treatment. What is it like to drive?
Filmed on my Mobius Action Camera, which does pick up a lot of ambient noise. The car is much quieter than it sounds!

I had a neighbour who had two! Total Citroën nerd, had many good talks with him too. He had two dark metallic green ones. Yeah, one for parts. :P The last truly beautiful Citroën in my opinion.
I believe in the United States, the CX was the last Citroen to be imported. I remember seeing ONE CX in the town I grew up in. The owner of the CX was the owner of the local high-end electronics shop in town. He would take it to work every day and park it in front of his retail shop. I want to say it was a 1987 model. It was white in color. Sadly the shop went out of business so i'm not sure where the car ended up after that. The CX was a completely different car than anything else on the road. The looks alone were show-stopping but it was either a love it or hate it design.
XM not launched until 1989.
I researched the model and it was the "CX". That was the last Citroen imported into the United States and was the model that I spoke about in this thread.
I thought a few XMs had made it to America. Maybe they trialled them, sold barely any and gave up.
@@HubNut I'm pretty sure the XM wasn't imported here. Even the CX wasn't imported through their dealer network as Citroens dealers were defunct well before 1987. My town had an old Citroen dealer and it was closed down even when I was a little kid in 1983. The gentleman that owned the CX in my town must have had it imported through a speciality import company because I have no idea how he got his hands on one. I never met him or asked him about the car. But I knew what it was because my best friends father while growing up had a vintage 1972 Citroen SM and he pointed it out to me several times. 2 Citroens(new and old) in one town was a HUGE DEAL back in 1987. It was unheard of really. That's how I know so much about them.
Absolutely wonderful cars. I bought a Series 1, 1.9TD SX for £250, ran it for 4 years and the only problem I had was a leaking hydraulic pipe which cost about £3 to fix! Incredibly capable car, looks good, great engine, goes well, is quiet, the suspension of course, what's not to like? I still regret getting rid of mine.
the longer you drive them, the more relax you get ! i've had 3 of them, the last one a 2.5 TD exclusive...a pity, they never put a HDI-diesel in the XM..that would have been great !

A Friend had a XM Break, loved it, never drove it, no licens, but now when I have a licens, every time I have been thinking of getting a new car I have always looked at the XM, having a long distance car would be nice, maybe some day... :-)
The only cars I've owned that corner flat or as near to flat yet still iron out the UK's rough roads. Superb drive and I particularly like the anti-dive and anti-squat feature which means the front end doesn't bury itself and the rear doesn't launch skywards when having to brake hard. Surefooted for such a large and heavy 'old school' car. Just replaced the original headgasket at 180,000 miles with stronger multi-layer steel job. Originals can go at similar mileage even on cars with FSH and regular coolant changes. Factory headgaskets tend to rot out and my one leaked down the back of the engine but the car never actually overheated. Engine out job to replace though so it's not all wine and roses but if you're handy with a spanner or two and have accesss to an engine hoist/crane then it can be done at home.

Just rediscovered this video, what a car that was for £375 I'm also so glad microphone technology has advanced so much in the last 6 years!
Those were the golden years of Citroen, when the brand manufactured elegant, charming and classy cars, original and different, then Peugeot killed Citroen, and now they produce ordinary cars like all others, without charisma and without elegance, but the worst was that they used the name DS to designate a current Shit that is worthless!
Sounds great value for money a very underrated car. Thumbs up.
In real world driving the 2.1 TD manual is good for 45mpg (the auto about 42mpg on a run). Service items are well priced. Trim, body panels and major electrical or mechanical components are best found via internet auction sites or forums. Citroen got rid of a lot of NOS few years back after the scrappage scheme. Have to agree with you regarding the foot operated parking brake. I dislike it and the front brake cables can bind if the steel liners crack or rust. Also worth checking the doseur valve lever to ensure it's not sticking as when it does, the brakes will be on just enough to increase brake wear and fuel consumption.
I have a '93 2.0 CT petrol Turbo. It's an extremely nice car to drive, tight handling and yet rides beautifully. I plan to re-paint it (perhaps a recolour in green), and it is just about to change into a modern 2.0 lt turbo diesel, and with a couple of other enhancements. My only complaint is the head room with a sunroof for a tall person. My head rubs on the ceiling. I will investigate lowering the seat 1.5 inches.

The SM and the CX are just much more charismatic, but I respect your opinion.

Lovely car, I always thought when I was younger these were wacky cars, but as I have aged it truely is a stunning looking car, I would have one of these over anything that Citroen offer now.
3:02 it's the poverty spec SX model, Exclusive models had walnut and leather (optional).
I had a 3.0 V6 and had it for many years. I really wish I hadn't sold it.

Was the XM one of the first production cars to feature door handles hinged at the front that you pull out as seems to be the norm on pretty much nearly every car made nowadays? One of the car magazine reviews (could've been 'Car' magazine from June '89) wasn't too kind and said they wouldn't look out of place on a JCB.
Although from a practical point of view they are easy to use as you can hook a single finger around it and pull - no triggers to squeeze (or fail like on Mk2 Golf/Jetta when the casting breaks), no button to press in with your thumb (not always good for people with long thumbnails) and no flappy bit of plastic to lift up which can also break if you're too heavy-handed.
Has to be said you had to choreograph your hill starts: come to a halt, continue holding down brake pedal and clutch, gear lever into neutral, release clutch, hold down parking brake pedal, set the parking brake plunger, release your foot from the parking brake pedal, clutch down again, gear lever into 1st, bring the revs up, bring clutch up to biting point, release parking brake plunger accompanied with a loud bang and you're good to go. Such a dignified operation. I let someone drive mine and they couldn't find the parking brake pedal as they didn't lift their left leg high enough.
One problem I thought had was when I was driving my 1990 V6Si with a fractured right ankle - the engine kept cutting out whenever I stopped at junctions or traffic lights. Turned out I was catching the foldy-up key with my right knee due to keeping my right leg held in a comfortable position because of the pain.
ive driven a break service once with this engine the owner told me that the high pressure diesel pump is really the only weak link in this engine reconditioning one yourself is nearly impossible since its very hard to fit the gaskets properly for the rest its a top class engine

Yeah - less than £400 though Ian. I remember being sat on a plane off on my 3rd holiday of that year around 1984 - was minted - no kids two of us in good jobs and reading What Car's review of these vowing to get one.
Came back got a new job with a company car and the rest is history ........................totally regret missing out

Although I much prefer the CX I think the XM has rather futuristic styling, especially in silver/grey it resembles the 6000 SUX from the first Robocop film (1987).

Great video, am also an XM owner and I'm on my second. My one is the same spec and age as yours but with the ZF 4HP18 auto transmission...which has started to misbehave after two years of ownership. Hoping it's just the governor seals as they can be changed with the gearbox in situ.
My BX had the same gearbox. But in 250000 km I never had any problem with it. In fact, in my case it was the most reliable part of the car.
Never knew the xm had the 2.1 diesel. I drove one in a 406 taxi,it was rapid and handled like a gokart. In 17 years primarily driving 405s and 406s, this was one of the best but longevity wasn't it's strong suit,compared to the 405 1.9 straight diesel and 406 turbo diesel
Yup. 2.1 was fitted to Xantia and XM, as well as the 406 and 605. XM was the first car to use it as I recall.
HubNut I drove a 406 2.1 diesel, what a car! Would've been great if the 2.7 V6 was available in the 406, don't think my boss would've trusted us to drive them 😃

I was looking to swap my 190D for an Audi A2, but everytime there's going to be a change I always have a nosey at the old Citroen's for sale, all few of them 😅
We used to have a local elderly specialist who'd repair my mums BX or Xantia, but I'd be surprised if he's even still around..
As you seem to own more Citroen's than most..
In terms of max luggage space with the seats folded, and as far as replacement parts/reliability go, how do the XM and Xantia compare?
And is there much real difference between the BX and GSA?
Are any of them easy, temperamental, or particularly painful to own in 2023/4?
In many ways, the BX is a lot easier to look after than a GSA, and parts support is way better too because the engines are straight from Peugeot. I still love my GSA...
Got a Turbo CT MK1. Still trying to get it to work. Lovely car, not very reliable at all. Not the car fault, but previous owners!
Ah yes. Previous owners can be the source of many issues! I once had a Range Rover with electrical problems. Removed the dashboard and it was a complete nightmare of scotchlocks and insulation tape. Sold it on quickly...
I'm not going to sell it, I'm going to fix it. Hydraulics leaks are almost gone and electrical parts are almost solved. Minor things for such great engine! I hope it turns out to be "almost" as reliable as my Xantia HDi!

The Citroen XM replaced the CX in 1989, and is either beautiful or ugly depending on which angle you look at it. Haven't seen one for at least a decade, except for an early model parked in a genteel street in London. How many are still in use today?
221 on the roads as of Q4 2018 (down from 18k in 1998, 1.8k in 2008, and 418 when this video was uploaded).

My dad had a Xm i think it was a 2.0 esl name it it had it auto gearbox witch broke and he had to replace it 1.500 quid we could not sale it for love of money so I had it for about 3 happy years

Diesel is the shittest. The 8v 2.0 L petrol turbo engine is the best engine they made. Period.
dogsnoses We've had about a dozen XM over the years - all 2.1 Turbo Diesels, all did around 50 mpg. all were quiet, comfortable and made between 200 and 300,000 miles - wouldn't touch a petrol version except perhaps the 3.0 V6 24 valve manual.

I have no idea how you could take offence at my post as it's simply based on 10 years of experience. Our current XM count is three - all 2.5 TD Estates registered between 'M' & 'R' - they go well and are very nice to drive but not particularly economical. The 2.1 is probably our favourite though the V6 24v would be great if I wasn't paying for the fuel..

Citroën forced to calm down its usual flamboyant styling when you compare this to the SM because most drivers prefer boaring. Still a nice car but too repressed for my liking. Same applied to the DS5 an absolutely beautiful car but folks didn't like it because it looked too different. Boaring farts.

You sold it??!!! May I ask why??! I have 1989 Citroen bx diesel with only 113,000 on the clock and only paid 400 for it..it is for sale on eBay but I know I won't part with it! I do have a pug 206 1.4 hdi which is my daily run around but love to get rid of that and buy a Citroen xm as I find the shape very beautifully done. So what car do you drive now?
+Ian Raby I tend to get bored with cars quite quickly. The XM lasted a remarkable 18 months. Replaced it with a RAV4 for work reasons. 2CV is being restored to keep my Citroen kicks going. All explained in my more recent videos.

In some ways, yes, though hydropneumatic Citroens with struts do tend to crash a bit over potholes.

They didn't sell because of this evil rumor that french cars are not reliable. Look how reliable german cars are when they have come up to the level of technology of mid 50's citroens.
Sadly, early XMs really did have reliability issues, especially electrics. Germans also offered RWD, which buyers seemed to prefer. Their loss! I loved my XM.
@@HubNut Yeah I liked xm's too and I also liked my uncle's BX and my dads friends DS estate. What I meant is that the german cars of the early 90's were quite primitive and are only now coming up to the sophistication of even the DS and look at where their reliability has gone when they started building complex cars.
xantia looks better,but xm is more luxury car,but design is too old for today! im xantia owner! have some TIPs for new xantia owners in my channel :)

I've a v6 24v manual on a 1991 year. And by god does it go. The tct turbos are OK but I found them thirsty for a 2.0. The 2.0 16v 143bhp engine is another good petrol unit too..
