I am dealing with a much newer 1987 I just got ahold of and at some point someone also did a fairly elaborate resto on it. However the former owner had passed away and as the story I was told it didn't start. Both of his grandsons tried to get her running after his passing just recently listed it on Craigslist cheap. I had 3 days of spotty free time to go after her but kept getting interrupted by customers and phone calls so I kind of abandoned it for a few days until Saturday came and it was also time cut grass the summer curse as I call it. The following Saturday I dug around in the glove box and found a LETTER not a note. The letter was lengthy and all about the bad behaviors & habits of his son and grandsons. The letter began this way. If You are reading this and you are the new owner of this truck and it will not start there is a plug under the cab of this truck. The former owner wrote both his son and grandsons had bad drinking & drug problems and had smashed up 3 of his past nice trucks. He said if you are reading this now I assume you do not have drug and alcohol problems so push the plug together and enjoy the fruits of my hard earned work and money. The letter was signed Ernest Hawley Sr. I came to find out the son had died in a DUI related accident just up the street from where I live. However I bought the truck in Bloomsburg Pa quite a distance away from here. In my opinion the grandsons sold the truck for beer money nowhere what it was actually worth and they were quite the pair way too lazy to have even cleaned and washed the beautiful old truck to try to get a few bucks more 4 it.... But it's mine now... Outside of repairing the drivers side door someone boogered up it's beautiful once more. I had the door fixed before I got it running and drained both fuel tanks by removing em. I found lots and lots sludge in both fuel filters. I am assuming someone also put something like sugar down the fuel tanks. I have no explanation for the sludge in the fuel system. Most of the fuel lines are a plastic so only one piece was metal and it was was rotted. The truck ran but leaked gas all over till I smelled it... I have no explanation not even a clue for what I removed from the fuel tanks was just sludge. I replaced both fuel pumps too. LMC truck $89 each...
Why do people waste a good truck by putting a competitor engine in it. I would scrap it unless it had a Ford driveline in it

In the very early 1980's, my father had a '54 F100. I was 5 or 6, but I remember that truck. It went from rusty teal, to shiny grey with black accents in our garage. I remember watching Mom hand paint the embossed FORD lettering on the tailgate black. It had a Pontiac 389 V8 w/ Tri-Power carbs in it from a Catalina. It had sand bags in the bed so it didn't light up the tires at every start. One day he left home in it to go get the family cheese burgers at Burger Island, a 50's style drive in joint. (which has since burned to the ground) Anyhow, the phone rings at home, and it's Dad calling Mom to come get him at the Burger joint. Someone there saw his truck, and offered to buy it from him on the spot in cash, and Dad just happened to have the title in the glovebox. $3500 in 1981 is like $10,000 today. It was like 4x what he was into it for, and at the time he needed the money. He always I regretted letting it go, he really liked it. Which is why there is currently a 1954 F100 in his shop, blown apart getting restored. Frame, drivetrain, and suspension is done, sheet metal around 50% there. It's coming together nicely. His build is OE stock, not a street machine. It'd be going faster, but he's at the same time restoring a 1954 Ford 2-door V8. Both will be nice usable drivers, not show cars. A nice matched pair of '54 Fords.

I'm an old Pontiac guy, back in the days of GTO's and Tram Am's. Still love the sound of a 400. Still have a basement and garage full of Pontiac parts.

This video brought back some great memories, Back in the seventies I bought a 1955 F100 with a 312 ci Thunderbird with a factory automatic and 427 reared which was very rare, I put a 389 ci 390 hp Pontiac with a 400 turbo transmission. I had a lot of fun in the old truck

Seeing the inside of this truck sure brings back memories. Back in the sixties my dad had a fifties era medium duty F-Series with a bed topped with wood sides, and a 4x12 for a front bumper. He, my mom, my older brother and younger sister used to ride to church in it every Sunday before he bought an old Plymouth from a relative to use as a family car for his growing clan (He eventually had seven kids). The bed had a drop tailgate and was on a hydralic lift. We used to ride along with him to the local coal mine several times late in each year to pick up a ton or two of coal for the coal furnace in our house and for many of the older neighbors. When the mill was on strike and he was supporting us working as a handyman he also used it to cut down and haul away trees, paint houses, refloor porches, put on roofs and haul loads of trash to the local dump for people. The heater in that thing took forever to get going! Anyway, the interior was identical to this truck, the door controls, everything on the dash like the spedometer the starter button, it was even the same ugly redish/orange color (albeit quite faded). The only real differences i can recall was a clear red plastic internally illuminated four-way flasher pull switch on the lower section of the dash.near the ignition switch and the gear selector since it wasn't an automatic.

Chris, I had a 55 and a 56 both with the stock V8. The 55 had an automatic and the 56 had a three speed on the column. Sold the 55 after a few months because it wouldn't start after it warmed up. I never could figure it out so bye, bye. The 56 on the other hand was a joy to drive and yes it got a lot of attention on the streets. Had the big chrome reversed wheels on the back and some standard chrome wheels on the front. It had belonged to a neighbor who passed away and his wife actually came over to me and asked me if I wanted to buy it. Kept it for five years and it was a fair weather driver. When I sold it I got three times what I had paid for the truck. It was considered a classic even back then and the body had no rust on it anywhere. Colorado is pretty good that way and I have never heard of rusted out brake lines until I started seeing it here on the Internet.
Your friend should keep his hands on that one, it will just keep appreciating.

What memories, 45yrs ago I built a 1955 F100 with a 1967 Grand Prix 300hp/400ci/turbo400 as a daily driver. Had a total of $112 in it (not a misprint). Drove it several years.
Enjoyed the video. I have a 53 F100. I put a remote fill on the firewall for the master cylinder.

If my business ever picks up I am going to put a Pontiac in my Uncles truck. I had no clue you could buy and adapter to go from Pontiac to 350 chev turbo 400. I restored this truck years ago he bought it new in 85 in Alaska . I built a four bolt main 350 with a RV cam its been a wonderful engine. About 20 years ago I put in a US gear over drive to the tune of almost 2000 and my Uncle had the 400 rebuilt about 10 years ago I found a 428 for 500 if I would of known there was a adapter I would of bought it.I had no clue cores were going for $2000.00 I spent two months on body and paint this will eventually get a Indian under the hood !

Wow! Man what a beautiful truck, I had a 56 F100 with a 65 390 Thunderbird engine automatic on the floor. That I pay $200.00 from a guy who had it running and driving until one day tree came down on his garage and cracked the front windshield, I got the windshield put it in and was using it as a daily driver. The color of it was burgundy and had some rust but not bad enough that it couldn't be fixed which that I was doing slowly until I got rid of it, it really broke my heart to let it go. But I keep saying to myself that one day I'll get another one maybe the 56 panel tuck.

Single door lock is to keep the guys on the gentleman's side to let the ladies in the vehicle first. 🥰 The triangle vent window is called a smokers vent. But works real well for keeping you cooled off going down the road when turned in toward you. 😃
Funny, I was always told the lock is on the passenger side as these were mostly work trucks, and couriers and delivery men would always enter and exit the passenger side, safely away from traffic.

I just come across your channel and watched a couple videos, and let me tell you that I’ve never seen any mechanic work as hard or as fast. The knowledge you have to get these vehicles running is just crazy. I’ve really enjoyed the videos so far, so now I guess I have to binge.

I built this samre truck as a amt model kit in 1966
I learned to drive in a 1953 F100 which my dad took over from his dad in 1954. It had the 239 flat head and the factory 4 speed. Talk about cool! driving around in a truck that was built the year I was born.
Can't wait to see you breathe new life into this 1954 Ford/GM truck.

Years ago, I put a 400 Pontiac engine out of a 71 GTO into a 65 Chevy C-10. That thing was scary fast.

Ah Chris.. This is great. A walk down memory lane for me. I'm 60, been a mechanic all my life. The old junkers you work on were every day stuff for me as a lad in a country service station ( gas station). Fixing stuff the old fashioned way.. making do with what we had laying around. Never throwing anything away.. Lawn mowers to semi trucks.. washing machine one day.. sports car the next.. weld up a clothes line the next. I hope your channel inspires some young people. the key lock only on the passenger side goes back to an old law that said you could not get in or out of your vehicle from the drivers ( many states had that law ) side when parked on the street you will see people in old movies and tv shows always getting in from the passenger side

I have a 1992 Cheyenne with a Pontiac 455. Practically same exhaust setup but I have super 10s. I’m on deployment right now so I can’t hear my truck run but watching this video made me pretty stoked to drive my truck again so thanks for the motivation!

Nice find. My first hot project was a 54 Ford when finished it was painted an emerald green with metal flake black fender and running boards. A little 289 and auto to the stock rear. Ahhh memories.

I had a 1955 F100 with a 6 cylinder engine. It had a homemade camper that was only a shell just tall enough to almost stand. A couple whe were teachers that traveled with it had done the work. It had a light,small bookshelf and a fishing rod carrier on the side. I was in the Navy about to be discharged. I love that truck but my buddy whe was very mechanical heard a noise he said wax the main bearings just before I was to leave and drive from San Diego to Texas and then to Iowa. I couldn't take a chance on the engine going bad and sold it at a loss to a used car lot.
When I got home and employed I bought a 1954 F150 with a v8. A good friend wanted that truck and bought it. He fixed it up with a 389 engine, automatic transmission and paint job. A new leather interior and white vinyl top. This was 1970 ish. He still had the truck in the 90s and was going to redo it for his son. I think he still had it when he passed in 2011.
I had traded a car for a 1961 Ford Econoline truck in 1971 and stopped by to show him right after I got it. He tried to buy it on the spot. Something about Ford trucks you just gotta love!

FYI, it used to be illegal to enter your vehicle on the traffic side, that's why the key lock is only in the passenger door....................nice find there !!!!!!

Us born in 1965 my dad had a 1956 Ford F100 custom cab with the wrap around front and back window automatic which was pretty rare with the V8 factory engine that came with ? We had that truck all the way up until 1977 when my dad lent it to one of his friends and they didn't check the oil and burned it up then my dad sold it to somebody who was going to restore it? I sure have a lot of memories in that truck did a lot of things motorcycle riding took it camping a lot of good times in that old 56 truck my brother burning out in it that thing would light him up too let me tell you that V8 was no slouch we could light them up down the street but I always remember driving in a downpour going to la and had them windshield wipers slapping on high I turned him up to high and they got stuck under the window lip and the my dad got so mad at me tonight don't touch the windshield wipers just things I remember.
My first vehicle was a 1956 Ford F100. My frustration was also painted red. Good memories.

The key on the passenger side was put there because of chivalry. Back in the day, the gentleman would open the passenger door for his lady, so he'd unlock that side, she'd get in, slide across & unlock his door. And since she was already there, she could snuggle up to her man while he drove! 😊 Try it with Jen, she'll love it! Nice truck. I love the GM power! Ford guys hate you! 😂😂😂

My first vehicle was a 54 ford pickup with a 390 motor and a tilt front end, unfortunately it got totaled when some drunk lady made a left turn in front of me, hit her doing 45 the driver side front was pushed to the cab and that was the end of that truck. But yours brought back some good memories.

Here in calif. there's a law in motor vehicle code and probably most states that makes it illegal to exit your vehicle from the driver's side when parked at the curb (to prevent a sideswipe) hence the lock only on the passenger side. In the 60s I had a '54 with a '54 324 olds & 4 speed hydramatic. Have fun!!!

I had a truck like that once and the steering column went up and down like that sloppily and it was a cab mounts falling down on the frame. Great video

I remember putting models together back in the 70s of this truck with wooden kegs in the bed. Really cool looking trucks they are. Loved seeing you go over it and get it going. Look forward to the future videos on it.

Oh wow. My father had a 48 2and a half ton tow truck. Flat head v8. It was a great truck. The pto was awesome . The truck almost had 2 of everything.
