  • In this episode of 'How Things Work in Dubai', we go under the Floating Bridge and walk along the pontoon to find out how one of Dubai's most famous bridges works, every single day.
Opened in 2007, this six-lane bridge ferries 6,000 cars every peak hour on two identical mirrored decks spanning the entire Dubai Creek.
22 metres wide, 365 metres long and built in about 10 months, this is the story of Dubai’s Floating Bridge.

the khor isn’t big enough to make the overpass high enough for some of the ships to pass. It would have to be too curved for it to be stable.

After dropping out of uni, I used to go for jogs back in the winter of 2014 and finish right beside Dubai Courts. I'd eventually make my way to the bridge out of curiosity. Back then, there were 2-3 workers that would look after the bridge and be responsible for opening and closing it. Amazing folks that would crack jokes of each other to accommodate me and even shared some 4 AM chai they had in a large flask. You could catch seagulls and pelicans fearlessly sitting beside you and what seemed like the size of a damn Pterodactyl. At about 5:30 AM, a loud alarm would go off. You'd fear it was a missile strike lol but it's really the bridge reconnecting. Turn around, and you'll find cars starting to stack up at both ends, being the first ones to cross the bridge for the day. After reconnecting, I would make my final walk to DCC metro and head home. Made that jog for about 2 winters until the RTA was positioned in the bridge. After that, I never got to enter the bridge and I never met the old folks there, that made the experience worth jogging. Innocent, true and simple men. You'd never expect what happens behind the curtains and the people that work these machines on the daily, making life a whole lot convenient for us to just dub it as 'I managed to save my salik today'. The people of this city are honestly marvelous.

Seattle has two huge floating bridges, the original versions could both open for ship traffic. Both have been replaced with new floating bridges that don't open - the mechanism for opening and closing was too big of a headache.

Thanks pretty good to use a floating bridge for traffic and it's monitoring for safety regularly. 10 months time amazingly . It's seems to be doing it's job pretty good . Does it also run on solar Power? To be also available for back up system s. I saw use of generator s so just asking because sun available in your Area that would also assist with safety measures as well as conservative of energy efficient to its use daily . I am sure the transportation department s are aware of that as well. GREAT job! I've never seen anything like that. I've seen ferry s used in New York City to transfer cars across the water , but not
floating bridge to take traffic over water and move bridge on water. That's very clever!

A floating bridge offers unrestricted height for marine crafts to navigate. That means there is no height restrictions while navigating through the canal. If this is a normal overpass bridge there are height constraints for marine crafts to navigate through the canal.
